Rihanna has chopped her locks! Never one to shy away from a hair risk, the singer took to Instagram over the weekend to reveal her shorter cut with layered fringe. “Rihanna wanted something different, edgy, and fun, but simple at the same time,” Motions Celebrity Stylist Ursula Stephen told InStyle.com exclusively. “We don’t like neat or perfect hair — that balance of perfectly-imperfect has always been our thing.” Stephen has worked with the star for years, and duo has experimented with almost every style from a chic pixie to lengthy red strands. If Rihanna has you inspired to make a similar change, Stephen recommends paying extra attention to the little details. “The ends should be bumped tightly using a curling iron,” she added.
While My So-Called Life only aired for one season, the iconic scene where Claire Danes dyes her hair bright red to rebel against her mother holds a special place in our hearts, and apparently in the star’s as well! Right before last night’s taping of The Late Show with David Letterman, Danes revisited her infamous Angela Chase-esque hue, and although it isn’t as intense as the shade worn in the ’90s-era drama, we think it’s flattering all the same — and we’re sure Jordan Catalano would agree. The Homeland actress has been platinum blonde since 2006, when she did a brief stint as a brunette. Her new change poses the obvious question: Does this mean a 2013 update to the cult TV show is in the works? We doubt it, but we can always dream!
The release date for Fifty Shades of Grey may have been pushed back to February 13, 2015, but it’s clear that filming will be starting any day now, as evidenced by Dakota Johnson‘s brunette strands. Johnson, who will play Anastasia Steele in the film interpretation of the steamy novel, unveiled her new look on Monday (wearing Thierry Lasry “Orgasmy” shades) while shopping in Hollywood, only a few days before the Entertainment Weekly cover featuring her and co-star Jamie Dornan arrived on news stands. Fifty Shades of Grey quickly gained momentum after hitting store shelves last year, and despite the hype, the up-and-coming star isn’t intimidated by the risqué plot. “I’m not afraid of this story,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I understand this girl, and I get it.” We’ve only ever seen Johnson as a blonde, but we have to say, the darker hue is flattering on her and brings a welcome change for the fall season. With production beginning in the next few weeks, we can’t wait to see more sneak peeks at the movie, as well as Dakota’s new brown hair.
It’s that time of the year again — the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is took place at the Lexington Armory in New York City Wednesday night! Before the models hit the runway, InStyle.com went backstage to find out what goes into making a VS Angel. We spoke to makeup artist Dick Page and hairstylist Orlando Pita, who gave us all the details on this year’s looks — along with tips on how you can recreate it on yourself. “I kept the makeup really light and transparent this year, because it would be weird if the makeup was super crazy-glamorous, and then they have underwear on,” Page told InStyle.com. “Besides, they’re all very pretty young women, so they don’t need much more makeup. That’s the simplest thing you can do.” Take an exclusive trip backstage in our gallery to see how everything came together, then catch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on CBS, airing December 10 at 10 p.m. EST.
This girl is still on fire! At the London premiere of Catching Fire, Jennifer Lawrence gave her new pixie cut a polished touch by sweeping her long fringe to the back, and keeping her sides sleek. It’s certainly a change from the low-key bangs she wore when debuting the cut last week, and the sophisticated look was the perfect complement to her sparkling low-back Dior gown. We couldn’t help but notice that the style mirrored the swept-back updo our cover girl wore for her glamorous December feature, pre-cut, and now we’re wondering: Did Lawrence’s InStyle photo shoot inspire her latest red carpet hair look? We’re not sure, but we love it either way!
Rebecca Romijn has traded in her long locks for a short, modern bob. While many celebrities change up their hairstyle a few days or weeks before a big event, Rebecca Romijn gave her long layers the chop just one hour before arriving at Jessica Alba‘s second annual Baby2Baby Gala in Culver City, CA. “Campbell McAuley cut it. I was panicking in the car on the way over because I literally did it an hour ago, and that I got in the car and realized there were no mirrors around,” she told InStyle. “I felt it was time for a change. I had a couple of Brazilian blowouts in the last five years, and wanted to get rid of all that. Once in a while, change is good!” We agree, and we have to say, the shorter style looks amazing on the star. Her husband Jerry O’Connell shared the sentiment. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen her with short hair. I love it!” he told InStyle, noting that one of his children didn’t take it quite as well since she loved Romijn’s hair long. “But I’m hoping that my daughter is inspired by my wife, because that child refuses to cut her hair.” Tell us, do you like Rebecca’s shorter style?
Would You Get a Pixie Cut? Get the Details on Hollywood’s Latest Hair Obsession Straight From Kristin Chenoweth’s Stylist!Nov 11, 2013 @ 9:15 am
The pixie cut is certainly having a moment! Not long after Jennifer Hudson revealed her dramatic chop last week, Jennifer Lawrence, Kristin Chenoweth, and Pamela Anderson quickly followed suit, and we don’t blame them — the style is super-flattering, and we’re considering making the change ourselves. That’s why we just had to ask Chenoweth’s hairstylist Jonathan Hanousek for his expert tips on what to consider before getting a pixie cut, and how to keep the style on point (like Chenoweth’s stellar vocals!).
“I am loving this trend toward short hair in Hollywood. The reality is that women are sexy with short hair, and I feel like it shows strong self-confidence,” he told InStyle.com. “Almost anyone can wear their hair shorter, but keep in mind that everyone’s features are different and that you need to make adjustments accordingly.” Hanousek recommends picking your most-striking feature, and playing that up. “If you like your eyes, then cutting your fringe just below your brows will show them off. If you have great cheekbones, then drop your fringe just below them,” he added.
In Kristin’s case, she was inspired by Charlize Theron and Jenna Elfman’s short crops, so Hanousek took that direction and kept her bangs long. Also, keep your hair texture in mind so your stylist can tailor the cut to flatter you. “Generally straight to wavy textures work best, but don’t count yourself out if you have thicker or coarse hair,” he noted. A few quick passes of a straightener or blowdryer will allow you to work either a sleek finish, or you can let your hair air-dry so your natural texture can come through.
Hanousek also recommends anti-frizz products, but be sure not to overload as a little goes a long way — especially on shorter lengths. “My secret weapon is Moroccanoil Frizz Control ($34; moroccanoil.com). On Kristin, it adds the perfect amount of weight without making hair feel greasy,” he told us. “I also blow-dry with White Sands Undercover Styling Spray ($21; whitesandsproducts.com). It has medium hold, works on all hair types, and gives you just enough control without being stiff.”
Last night Thor: The Dark World star Natalie Portman stepped out with a dark new look. The actress debuted freshly-shorn chocolate tresses at a screening of the film in New York City, hosted by The Cinema Society and Dior Beauty. ”We just did it today! You can probably still smell my dye if you get close enough,” Portman told InStyle.com of her new locks, done by hairstylist Danilo. “It was like, twenty minutes before I got here.” Dressed in head-to-toe Dior except for a Charlotte Olympia lucite clutch, she joked about the army of people it takes to get her ready for an event. “A lot of people built this facade,” the actress shared. One of those people was makeup artist Pati Dubroff — who used only Dior Beauty products on Natalie — including Rouge Dior lipstick in Rose Baiser ($34), Diorshow Fusion Mono eyeshadow in Aventure ($30), and Diorshow Blackout mascara ($25). We are loving her sophisticated new look! One of Natalie’s favorite moments from filming the movie? “I got to slap both Tom (Hiddleton) and Chris (Hemsworth) in the face, which was a highlight for sure!,” she stated about her co-stars who play Loki and Thor, respectively. “We had a lot of fun working together.” Be sure to check out Thor: The Dark World, in theaters everywhere tomorrow.
