Before heading back out to enjoy the show, Bey quick-changed into a body-hugging, white Michael Costello mermaid gown with strategically placed lace detailing and sheer inserts. The couple got cozy in the front row and shared a loving embrace as it was announced that Jay Z (along with pal Justin Timberlake) won the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for “Holy Grail” — where he thanked God and his wife — and dropped this gem: ”I wanna tell Blue that, look, daddy got a gold sippy cup for you!” Signal the collective swoon. All eyes were on Lorde last night at the 2014 Grammy Awards, where the up-and-coming singer took home honors for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year — all while wearing an edgy deep plum lip, at that! “We wanted to keep the look fresh and radiant,” says the star’s makeup artist Amber Dreadon. “Modern, a bit boyish, and darkly cool with a lip focus.”
After creating a flawless canvas and adding subtle definition around the eye area, Dreadon picked up MAC‘s Lip Pencil in Vino ($15; maccosmetics.com) to trace Lorde’s pout. She then mixed the dark aubergine lipstick in Cyber with MAC’s recently-revamped Heroine shade ($15 each; maccosmetics.com) to create a custom indigo color. Since purple was a hue once reserved exclusively for queens, kings, and other high-ranking officials, we think the look is a perfect nod to the star’s breakout single, while complementing both her quirky personality and unconventional dress choices. But Lorde isn’t the only star who rocked a wine lip last night! Following her steamy performance with Jay-Z, Beyoncé donned a gorgeous bordeaux hue, which contrasted beautifully against her white Michael Costello gown.
Kacey Musgraves had quite a night at the Grammys! Not only did she win the award for Best Country Song and Best Country Album, she looked radiant on the red carpet as well. The star began her evening in a demure blush tulle gown by Armani Prive, then swapped the dress for full country gear (complete with light up cowboy boots) during her live performance.
InStyle.com got the exclusive peek at her getting ready with her makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle. “I wanted to complement Kacey’s gorgeous blush-colored dress with an equally soft, romantic look,” Buckle told us about the inspiration for the look. He started off prepping Musgraves’ face with a primer, then applied maracuja creaseless concealer ($24; tartecosmetics.com) underneath her eyes to erase any darkness.
We were especially obsessed with the star’s dewy peach flush, which Buckle achieved by dusting Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in blissful ($26; tartecosmetics.com) over the apples of her cheeks. For her lips, Buckle told us, “To complement the softness of her look, I applied Power Pigment in Tipsy ($24; tartecosmetics.com).” During her performance, he added a dramatic cat eye with MultiplEye lash enhancing liquid liner ($22; tartecosmetics.com). We think there is a new it girl in the music world and we can’t wait to see what she does next!
The buzz word on everyone’s lips last night had to be the Grammys, (quickly followed by “surfboard”), and we teamed up with Facebook once again to see what moments dominated the digital conversation. This time we focused on the gorgeous accessories that the stars wore down the red carpet, and while sadly Pharrell’s viral hat did not make the cut, what did was truly was eye-catching.
28% of you couldn’t keep your eyes off the stunning earrings seen on the carpet, more specifically Taylor Swift‘s gorgeous diamond drops and Katy Perry‘s dreamy danglers. Another accessory pairing that had 20% of you gabbing? The red shoes and clutch that Sara Bareilles carried to complement her Blumarine gown. And let’s not forget about how Madonna and Rita Ora adorned their hands! The Queen of Pop channeled her inner Michael Jackson wearing a jeweled glove and 19% couldn’t stop talking about it, while Ora adorned each of her fingers with a different statement ring — trés bold! Hollywood was front and center last night at music’s biggest night, the Grammy Awards, and amidst all the jaw-dropping performances and noteworthy moments, the stars were taking time to capture all the behind-the-scenes happenings via Instagram. From an on-stage snap of Beyoncé and hubby Jay Z that will make you say aww, to a hilarious shot of Neil Patrick Harris photo-bombing Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s selfie, to Rita Ora showing off her blinged out digits, the stars were making the most of their glam night out. We rounded up the 10 best Grammy-inspired Instagram shots from the evening. Click through the gallery to see the stars’ best candids.
The Grammys continued to convince us that wearing crimson on the red carpet may just be the color trend of awards season this year. On music’s biggest night the scarlet shade blazed bright on multiple stars, making it a top trend of the evening. Taking a nod from one of our favorite runway trends of 2013, A-listers stepped out in bold flame-hued dresses looking majorly hot.
Colbie Caillat was beautiful in an Ezra Santos gown with sheer stripe, a high neck, and floral appliqués which she paired with an ITA Collection clutch. Pink rocked the carpet in a Johanna Johnson dress featuring a corsetry-inspired bodice with bodycon seaming. Miranda Lambert chose a custom Pamella Roland, which featured a perfectly plunging v-neck that looked stunning on the singer. These sizzling looks had us wanting more red.
There weren’t any shades of gray at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. Instead, the black-and-white combo once again made a reappearance on the red carpet, but this time in unexpected forms. Madonna sported the contrasting colors in a menswear-inspired look (courtesy of Ralph Lauren and hand-picked by son David), donning a black cady double-breasted tuxedo jacket, complete with a crisp optic-white button-down and black double-faced wool pants.
Katy Perry stood out in her ethereal Valentino Couture gown—an all-white frothy tulle creation that doubled as a music sheet sprinkled with a medley of notes. Paula Patton took advantage of the statement-making shades with a fierce look in a body-hugging zebra-print number. With a string of award shows left of the season, we’re definitely expecting to see more of these classic colors.
The 2014 Grammy Awards brought a medley of braids to the red carpet as a top hair trend of the night. As a nod to one of our favorite girls on fire (second to Alicia Keys, of course), Sara Bareilles used Katniss Everdeen as inspiration for the tiny twists in her boho-chic waves, while Katy Perry and Colbie Caillat each took the updo route. Perry opted for an oversized knot, and we especially loved how Caillat gave her look extra drama by adding a plait that started at the nape of her neck, and was wound into a ballerina bun.
Eager to try your hand at Caillat’s embellished updo? The star’s hairstylist Torsten Witte began by blowing out her damp strands with a T3 Featherweight Luxe Dryer ($250; t3mircro.com), then locked in the sleek texture with the brand’s SinglePass Flat Iron ($160; t3micro.com) before starting on the braid. Taking a section of hair at the nape of her neck, Witte began twisting under her right ear, and continued until he reached the top of her head. Once he secured the plait with an elastic, he pulled the remaining hair and the twist into a ponytail, then wound the entire length around the base to form a loose top knot. A few hair pins and a spritz of hairspray anchored the style, and kept it in place all night. We love it! Get even more Grammy style inspiration by checking out what everyone wore in our gallery.
