Just one day before the 86th annual Academy Awards, celebrities headed to the beach to honor those recognized for independent filmmaking at the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica. For the laid-back event, stars ditched their formal attire in favor of less fancy designs. Cate Blanchett went for a funky Roksanda Ilincic dress, Lupita Nyong’o showed up in an unusual choice for her — a textured jumpsuit by Stella McCartney, Shailene Woodley chose a trademark midriff baring top by Lyn Devon, and Paula Patton brightened things up in a Lorena Sarbu mini dress. For an up close look at what everyone wore, take a look through our gallery.
If there is one designer who knows how to put the fun in presenting a collection, it’s Stella McCartney. Last night, the designer hosted an intimate launch to showcase her fall 2014 collection at the Harold Pratt House & Peterson Hall in New York City, complete with hopscotch and miniature Escalade power wheels. Close friends—including Liv Tyler, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Susan Sarandon, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin—also stopped by to join the fun.
As guests indulged in small bites, cakes in the shapes of Stella’s signature handbags, Beluga Vodka cocktails, and flutes of Veuve Clicquot champagne, models sported pieces from Stella’s new line including houndstooth and polka dot-printed pieces, along with designs featuring English artist Gary Hume’s graphic drawings, and masculine-inspired footwear (all sustainable of course). As much as we love the new collection, we can’t help but wonder which of McCartney’s friends did a round of hopscotch. To see more celebrities from this week’s biggest parties, look through our gallery.
From the very beginning, Stella McCartney has been a designer on a mission. A social activist and committed vegetarian, she refuses to use leather or fur in her clothing and accessories. “Our company wants to be efficient yet ethically conscious, and it’s exciting how the artisans we work with rise to the task,” the designer said in the Olivia Wilde-covered August issue of InStyle. “For example, a pair of boots might have a lighter, biodegradable sole; a soft, pliable hemp lining; or embossing that doesn’t add weight. The well-grounded ones give you height and attitude—without the pain.” With her unwavering social conscience, she makes clothes that suit her and her fans perfectly, because they are celebrate the marvel of being a modern woman. Those fans include celebrities Julianne Moore, Kate Hudson, Penélope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz, who McCartney not only dresses, but hangs with, too. For the issue, InStyle asked the designer to give us a few style pointers to get us excited about fall. Does it get any better than this, Stella McCartney? Yesterday, the British designer was awarded Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE)—an honor presented by Queen Elizabeth II herself!—due to her dedication and contributions to British fashion. After all, this is the woman to designed Great Britain’s uniforms for the London Olympics and dressed the Future Queen, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge multiple times, so this recognition makes the royal family official fans. So, for her bout at Buckingham Palace, McCartney’s outfit represented her own talents—she chose a cobalt blue skirt-suit she designed as well as a headpiece hand-sewn by her milliner pal Philip Treacy, which consisted of two Cartier jewels and a veil she bought as a teen, WWD reports. Papa Paul must be so proud.

Her Majesty the Queen has just released her annual New Year Honours list, and Stella McCartney landed one of the 71 spots in this year’s lineup! McCartney, who designed the U.K.’s uniforms for this summer’s Olympic games and was named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards, has been named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her “services to fashion.” The honor is one of the five orders of chivalry originally created by King George V in 1917 and still in place to this day. And since we already know the Duchess of Cambridge is a fan—she wore the designer’s vivid cobalt sheath twice in 2012—we can only predict the princess will show off more of McCartney’s fashion-forward designs (and perhaps even maternity styles) this year!
