Inside the Party: The Great Gatsby Costumes by Prada & Miu Miu Go on Display

If you weren’t already eagerly awaiting Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, the utterly decadent costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin will completely lure you in. Prada, who first collaborated with Luhrmann on Romeo + Juliet, selected garments from prior collections that already had 1920s elements and re-styled them for each of the two balls that take place in the movie. The gorgeous result is a bespoke collection displayed not only in the movie (in theaters May 10) but also the new exhibition, Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby at the Prada Epicenter in Soho. It marks the first time ever that Prada and Miu Miu garments are housed under the same roof, and we were there to see the exquisite sequin, crystal, and pearl-encrusted costumes up close at the New York opening, along with Prada-clad guests Florence WelchKaty Perry, the film’s stars Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher, and the collaborators Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada. In the novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald transformed parties into characters themselves, and Prada was able to do the same with the exhibit. Mirroring the lavishness of the costumes, the downtown space is decorated with custom Gatsby wallpaper, screens with behind-the-scenes montages, and cases of ornate accessories. “I wish I could have been in the movie just to wear that costume,” we heard one guest whisper to another. We’ve never wanted to be Daisy Buchanan more.

The exhibit will be on display at the Soho Epicenter through May 12 and then travels to Prada’s Tokyo Epicenter store and the IFC Mall in Shanghai. Click to see more photos.

Exclusive The Good Wife Fashion Details: Season 4, Episode 19

Apr 1, 2013 @ 3:00 pm

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered last night, and it proved just how much your fashion can reflect your personality—especially within the context of characters on a TV show. Case in point: Julianna Margulies’s lawyer character Alicia Florrick (shown in Prada) was the complete opposite of guest star Morena Baccarin’s sex-crazed and money-hungry Isobel Swift (shown in Alexander McQueen). “We were trying to exude sex with Isobel and her clothes, and we don’t do that with Alicia,” costume designer Daniel Lawson told InStyle.com. In fact, this season, he’s making Alicia look more professional and buttoned-up than ever. “She’s been doing more ensembles this season, which gives a nod to her making partner and making more money,” Lawson explained. “That means looking more put together than previous seasons. If I tried to pull pieces for her from the first or second season, it’s impossible—she’s just such a different character.” Get all the exclusive details the looks he picked last night the gallery, and follow Lawson on Twitter @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.

Anne Hathaway’s Busy (and Chic) Awards Season Red Carpet Run

Anne Hathaway is now an Oscar-winning actress. She wore Prada (left) when she took home the golden statue for Best Supporting Actress for her tear-jerking portrayal of Fantine in Les Miserables, and she took one very long, well-dressed road to get to that Oscars stage. At the annual nominees luncheon before the big day, she still didn’t know what she would wear. “I need to get on that, don’t I?” she told reporters. “I definitely have some ideas, some cool options, but no specific plans yet, no preparation.” Whether she was wearing (L to R) Gucci at the Costume Designers Guild Awards, Chanel Couture at the Golden Globes, or runway-fresh Giambattista Valli at the SAG Awards, Hathaway always put her best foot forward—and she only repeated designers twice. Not only is tonight the biggest night of the year for fashion in Hollywood, it’s also nearing the end of the fall 2013 runway shows at Milan Fashion Week. Today, Italian designers Emporio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and Salvatore Ferragamo will also show in Milan, so keep an eye out for extra-special pieces that skipped the runway when the red carpet starts tonight on ABC at 7/6c. Why InStyle Loved Prada’s Disheveled Chic for Fall

Feb 22, 2013 @ 6:30 pm

Fashion Week is in Milan, and InStyle’s Fashion Director Cindy Weber Cleary is there with it, scooping up the latest. Her favorite look from today’s lineup: Prada‘s cool-girl vibes. “The models in Miuccia Prada’s sensual, spectacular fall collection looked intentionally disheveled,” says Weber Cleary. “With wet hair, off-kilter layers, and weekend-bag sized satchels, it was as if they stepped out of the shower and had to dress quickly before running out the door.” And yet so chic!

Runway Looks We Love: Prada

Feb 22, 2013 @ 2:57 pm

The Prada show is always a thought-provoking and statement-making fashion powerhouse, and this season’s breathtaking lineup did not disappoint. The film noir-inspired collection was full of classic looks (think: belted ’40s-style dresses and swing coats) with a modern, slightly disheveled twist. Models looked glamorously undone, with old Hollywood movie star style and tousled, wet hair that lent an air of mystery and intrigue. The dark color palette was offset by the boldly hued accessories (including oversize bags and platform sandals). See our favorite looks in the gallery!
