Zippers have long been type-cast as a serviceable element, but now more than ever they are an in-demand, decorative detail—and they’re not afraid to show some teeth. The closure took center stage on fall’s offerings, showing up on everything from cozy pullovers and leather minis, to zipper teeth-trimmed accessories. Perhaps we can blame it on the impact made at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring 2013 costume exhibit, Punk: Chaos to Couture, where zipper-laden jackets and hardware-heavy separates were on display, or, we can point to Hedi Slimane’s second women’s collection for Saint Laurent (right), which was filled with zippers galore, grunge-style leather, muted flannels, and floral babydolls. If punk isn’t up your alley, take a cue from Miuccia Prada’s Miu Miu collection (left) and add colorful extras in classic patterns, like stripes and polka dots. We gathered 18 pieces to suit your zipper taste—all of which will leave you clear of wide-eyed, heart-dropping panic when someone whispers “XYZ.”
Prada‘s cool, edgy younger sister is getting into the fragrance game! Miu Miu, the high-fashion label bearing creator Miuccia Prada’s nickname, has just teamed up with Coty to develop a line of signature fragrances, set to launch in 2015. Since the scent is in its initial phase, no additional details have emerged as of yet, but if the runway pieces serve as an indicator, we’re hoping to see the bottle decked out in a trendy colorblocked scheme with an edgy twist. “Miu Miu is one of the most refined and respected luxury houses in the world, and one of the fastest-growing global brands in the whole fashion industry,” said Coty’s CEO Michele Scannavini. “It is an exciting opportunity for Coty to build a worldwide fragrance business for Miu Miu.” We’ll say! Stay tuned for more details and first looks at the fragrance as the launch date approaches.

If you weren’t already eagerly awaiting Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, the utterly decadent costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin will completely lure you in. Prada, who first collaborated with Luhrmann on Romeo + Juliet, selected garments from prior collections that already had 1920s elements and re-styled them for each of the two balls that take place in the movie. The gorgeous result is a bespoke collection displayed not only in the movie (in theaters May 10) but also the new exhibition, Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby at the Prada Epicenter in Soho. It marks the first time ever that Prada and Miu Miu garments are housed under the same roof, and we were there to see the exquisite sequin, crystal, and pearl-encrusted costumes up close at the New York opening, along with Prada-clad guests Florence Welch, Katy Perry, the film’s stars Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher, and the collaborators Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada. In the novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald transformed parties into characters themselves, and Prada was able to do the same with the exhibit. Mirroring the lavishness of the costumes, the downtown space is decorated with custom Gatsby wallpaper, screens with behind-the-scenes montages, and cases of ornate accessories. “I wish I could have been in the movie just to wear that costume,” we heard one guest whisper to another. We’ve never wanted to be Daisy Buchanan more.
The exhibit will be on display at the Soho Epicenter through May 12 and then travels to Prada’s Tokyo Epicenter store and the IFC Mall in Shanghai. Click to see more photos.

Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett (in Miu Miu) had a very special date night in New York last night; the couple attended the premiere of activitist Angela Davis’s film Free Angela and All Political Prisoners, held at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. The documentary tells the story of Angela’s life, and how she started out as a young college professor whose social activist implicated her in a botched kidnapping that lands her on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list. The movie opens tomorrow, April 5: click here to find out where to see it. Click the photo at left to see more of the week’s biggest parties!
Ooh, la, la! While Paris Fashion Week ended today, the très chic runway offerings will continue to inspire our wardrobe and beauty choices for months to come. The creative hair and makeup looks showcased at Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu were among our favorites, and we loved the different statements made by each. Vuitton and Miu Miu both opted for a saturated bordeaux lip, while Chanel transferred the drama to the models’ lids with aptly-placed silver glitters. Get the details on each look up close in the gallery.
Time for a fun little fashion lesson! Our word of the day is: Craquelé. It’s the fancy French word for the word crackle (stemming from craquelure), which denotes the natural cracks and crevices that occur over time in ancient ceramics and paintings (think: Mona Lisa). Now, Miuccia Prada adapted the idea and used it for her just-launched Miu Miu accessory collection (shown right), achieving the look by cracking the leather’s colored dye on the surface. The two-tone craquelé leather totes just hit miumiu.com ($1,395 to $1,965), and there are pumps available as well ($695), in colors like cipria, red, geranio, and black. Got it? OK, good—school’s out!
