Hot Designer Collaboration Alert: Catherine Malandrino for Kohl’s, Coming This Fall

Hot on the very colorful heels of Derek Lam’s spring collaboration with Kohl’s, the retailer just announced their next DesigNation partnership for fall 2013: Catherine Malandrino. The limited-edition line of shirts, dresses, skirts, pants, and more is sure to be extra-special, as it’s inspired by a recent trip Malandrino took to her hometown of Paris. “What I find inspiring is to look at Paris with the step back approach of a tourist. The line is the illustration of a Paris dream for the American woman,” InStyle.com learned from Malandrino, who gave us an exclusive sneak peek of what we can expect from the line. “The nightlife and glamor of a show at the Crazy Horse inspired me to use black tulle and fishnet with a touch of sparkle. The chic [style] in the Saint Germain district, just a trench coat and a little black dress.” Expect a Kohl’s take on her romantic runway looks (see pieces from her fall 2013 runway collection at right), all at Kohl’s affordable prices—everything in the collection will be between $36 and $130 when it launches in Kohl’s stores and on kohls.com this fall. With Derek Lam’s Rio de Janeiro-inspired collection for the Kohl’s DesigNation landing in stores next month, the designer gave InStyle an inside look what inspired him to create the line in the video above. The clip takes you on a mini-tour through the Brazilian coastal city, highlighting the percussive music that lines its streets, the decadent meals enjoyed by the locals, and (of course) the beautiful beaches and landscapes that made their way directly onto the patterns seen in the collection. “Rio’s just one of those wonderful cities that has so much color and so much life,” Lam says. “It has a jungle-meets-city atmosphere: modern and timeless at the same time.” The entire limited-edition line, priced between $36 and $88, arrives in stores and online at kohls.com April 5th. Inspired by a trip that he took to Rio de Janeiro, the collection embodies the spirit of the South American city. “It’s really exciting, what’s happening with Rio right now. With the Olympics, it’s very modern,” Lam told InStyle.com. “It’s such a sensual city, so I thought that would help me step outside the box of what I usually use as an inspiration.” Filled with bright colors and bold patterns, the collection combines the feel of Brazil with his classic feminine aesthetic. “I really played with prints to give texture and life to a summer collection,” Lam continued. “But the denim dress (right) is one of my favorites. Derek Lam‘s Kohl’s collection will hit stores April 5—and we have an exclusive sneak peek at two of the looks from the collection! The designer signed on to Kohl’s internationally-minded series, DesigNation, last November, choosing Rio as his source of inspiration for looks like these dotted separates ($44 for the tank, $54 for the pants) and this green boatneck dress ($64). “I’m always looking to the past for inspiration, but also trying to interpret it for contemporary life,” said Lam when asked to explain his inspiration. “I think Rio is a perfect example of that.” Shop the entire limited-edition collection (priced between $36 and $88) on kohls.com from April through May.
