Experimentation Time! Anna Kendrick on Finding Her Fashion Personality

Jun 18, 2013 @ 7:30 am

If it were up to Anna Kendrick, she’d prefer comfort on the red carpet. “I would literally wear purple sweatpants, a purple pullover, purple socks, and purple slippers every day, red slippers if I was feeling fancy,” Kendrick told InStyle.com at Coach’s recent Third Annual Summer Party at The High Line in New York City. But since she’s a movie star and YouTube star (“Cups” has almost 20 million page views), sweatpants aren’t going to fly. And she’s getting used to it: “Fashion is like a new part of my life, and I really like experimenting and dressing up,” the actress said. “One day I’ll try to have a tougher look and the next day will be really romantic. I really enjoy wearing different outfits.” And it shows! From her black and blue Donna Karan Atelier gown at the 2013 Tony Awards to her printed orange and green Thakoon dress, it seems like her experimentation has only just begun. DKNY’s Iconic Soho Wall Is Coming Back With #DKNYArtworks, and You Can Get Involved

Jun 6, 2013 @ 11:15 am

For 16 years, DKNY dominated Soho with its massive mural at the corner of Houston and Broadway. (Watch the creator of the wall Peter Arnell explain its history in the video above.) In 2008, the wall came down to make room for new artwork and ads—but the DKNY wall and its true New York spirit never left. Now, it’s going global. Starting this week, the brand launched #DKNYArtworks, a project that enlisted 10 international artists to create their own interpretations of the iconic DKNY Soho Wall (think 3D sculptures and billboards) and put them on display in 10 cities around the world (think London, Seoul, Paris, and Times Square). “It’s like a worldwide street art fair—connecting the dots of art, style and community,” says Donna Karan. And you can get involved. Download the DKNYfx app (available on iTunes and Androids) to bring the artwork to life. Plus, if you tag any of your posts on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Weibo, and Vine with #DKNYArtworks, they will filter into a traveling art piece that moves around the world. To check out the art and shop DKNY collection inspired by the pieces, visit dknyartworks.com.

Launch You’ll Love: Donna Karan’s Fashion For Haiti: One Million Hearts Initiative

Apr 22, 2013 @ 3:30 pm
Donna Karan Fashion for HaitiBilly Farrell/BFAnyc.com

Donna Karan’s Fashion for Haiti: One Million Hearts initiative is now up for your browsing and bidding pleasure. The designer, along with Council of American Fashion Designers President Diane Von Furstenberg, helped wrangle over 160 designers in the CFDA to decorate papier-mâché hearts, and the one-of-a-kind pieces are up for auction on eBay starting today. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Haitian Artisan Project within Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation, which fosters the education of Haiti’s artisans. “Designing is designing the future,” Karan remarked at the reveal of the hearts at her Urban Zen store in New York City this month, where she was joined by designer Kenneth Cole and supporter Hugh Jackman. “All of us design clothing, apparel, but unless we design people’s insides we can’t design their outside and in their inside is their heart.” Visit ebay.com to see the designer hearts, and place your bids through May 2.

Inside the Party: Hugh Jackman, Kenneth Cole, and Donna Karan Launch Fashion for Haiti

Apr 12, 2013 @ 4:45 pm
Fashion for HaitiBilly Farrell/BFAnyc.com

Hugh Jackman and Kenneth Cole joined Donna Karan for cocktails and canapés to celebrate the release of Fashion for Haiti: One Million Hearts last night, and Jackman was thrilled to throw his support behind the designer (even on the night of his 17th wedding anniversary). “I love Donna’s passion and commitment and persistence for the cause,” Jackman said of the initiative, in which Karan brought together over 160 designers in the Council for American Fashion Designers to decorate papier-mâché hearts. Each heart was on display at the Urban Zen studio in New York City where the event was held, as seen above, and will be auctioned on ebay.com to raise money for the Haitian Artisan Project within Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Foundation, which is dedicated to creating jobs and enhancing education of Haiti’s artisans. “I so believe in philanthropy and commerce,” Karan remarked. “I can’t separate the two. I call them dressing and addressing. Dressing on the outside but addressing on the inside.” Visit ebay.com to preview the collection and place your bids starting April 22—the auction closes May 2.

Nina Dobrev Repeats Red to Honor Her First Look with Stylist Ilaria Urbinati (Aw!)

Mar 28, 2013 @ 8:30 am

Nina Dobrev celebrated her stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, at THR‘s Top Stylist Luncheon, which is why she chose to wear this strawberry MaxMara pantsuit—a look she said she chose to reference the first time she and Urbinati worked together. “I wanted to pay homage to her. The first job Ilaria and I worked together on was the 2011 Emmys, when I wore Donna Karan‘s red dress, so I wanted to honor that,” Dobrev told InStyle.com. So sweet! And she went on to say why their partnership, which includes Elie Saab, Monique Lhuillier, and Naeem Khan dresses, works so well: “If something doesn’t work, even if it’s a big designer look, she’s not going to make me wear it just because. It’s whatever I feel best in and what is event-appropriate. That’s why I love her so much.” If only every closet came with an Ilaria!

The Good Wife Fashion Details: Season 4, Episode 15

Mar 4, 2013 @ 4:41 pm

A new episode of The Good Wife premiered on Sunday, in which Julianna Margulies’s character Alicia Florrick had to play hardball at work (cutting associates’ hours) and at home (helping her husband at the debate). For the story arc, costume designer Daniel Lawson wanted to keep her look neutral, with only one big pop at her husband’s debate, in which he put her in a bright red dress by No. 35 designer Andrea Cohen. “I wanted her to look neutral all episode, and then really pop,” Lawson said. “I wanted her to overpower the opponent, Maddie, visually. There is definitely something political about her look.” Get all the details on last night’s looks in the gallery, and follow Lawson on Twitter @GoodWifeFashion for the latest updates.

The Way They Are: Barbra Streisand & Donna Karan Together Again on Oscar Night!

Feb 25, 2013 @ 11:03 am

When legendary singer Barbra Streisand took to the stage to perform “The Way We Were” at last night’s Academy Awards (for the first time in 36 years), she was glittering from head-to-toe in a look by a designer who just happens to be her best friend: Donna Karan. “We’re like sisters!” Karan told InStyle.com at the Governors Ball after-party. “It was really a collaboration to celebrate her shining star, and her lightness. That’s why it was black and gold. And then when we saw the set, it was one of those things that very rarely happen in life, it’s very rare that you get that pull. And she just radiated.” Karan named the black, asymmetrical dress “City Lights,” a construction of chiffon layers encrusted with matte gold sequins and beads complete with a long-sleeve capelet. Watch Streisand perform the iconic song as an homage to composer Marvin Hamlisch (which won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1973) here!
