Our favorite looks this week—plucked from our Look of the Day section—happened to represent two of spring’s biggest trends: black and white, and shades of red. Jennifer Lopez was white hot in Lanvin, Miranda Kerr stepped out with a leather Givenchy tote and buckled Barbara Bui booties, Michelle Obama took the Inaugural Ball stage in red Jason Wu, Diane Kruger wore Chanel to the label’s haute couture show, and Rose Byrne wore a draped Balenciaga dress in her namesake color. So who do you think dressed best? Vote in the poll below! More
After making his exit from Balenciaga in November, former creative director Nicolas Ghesquière joined Twitter! For his first tweet from @TWNGhesquiere, the French designer posted a photo of a Star Wars storm trooper helmet with the caption, “Thank you to all of you for such a fantastic welcome!” (He already has 4,100 followers). Ghesquière’s 15-year career at Balenciaga is also represented—his Twitter profile photo is a shot of him with the brand’s Florabotanica face, Kristen Stewart. So, say hello!

It’s official: Alexander Wang is the new creative director of Balenciaga! PPR, the company that owns the label, confirmed the appointment today after a week of speculation. ”I am deeply honored to embark on this new role for a brand and house that I have such great admiration and respect for,” says the 28-year-old designer, who as creative director, will be responsible for the ready-to-wear collections for both men and women, accessories, and the brand’s image, in addition to leading his own eponymous label. Wang takes the place of Nicolas Ghesquière, who left the company on Friday after 15 years, and follows in the footsteps of superstars like Oscar de la Renta, Emanuel Ungaro, and Hubert de Givenchy, who all led the house during their careers. Surely, this will be one of the most anticipated debuts of 2013. InStyle managing editor Ariel Foxman says: ”I cannot wait to see how Wang will bring his uniquely contemporary vision to such a lustrous, storied, and innovative fashion house.” Let the countdown to Wang’s first runway show for Balenciaga begin!

After a week of rumors circling the fashion world that New York designer Alexander Wang would take exiting creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s place at Balenciaga, the news is confirmed! The label is expected to make the announcement next week, as Ghesquière’s official departure from the Parisian house is today. The 28-year-old designer’s appointment will prove to be interesting for Balenciaga—Wang’s downtown, punk rock-inspired designs have made him a favorite of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Miranda Kerr, and Rihanna, as well as a must-have for women around the world. ”Fashion shouldn’t be about what is appropriate,” he told InStyle‘s September 2011 issue. “Getting dressed is much more fun if it’s about satisfying you.” We can’t wait to see what he brings to the label!

Our Look of the Day top picks this week were all about black, white, and a pop of red (or a combination or all three!). The five that topped our list were: Kristen Stewart in a black-and-white Balenciaga runway look, accessorized with a Cartier bracelet and Christian Louboutin heels, Marion Cotillard in a two-tone high-low Christian Dior gown, Taylor Swift in a retro red dress, Cameron Diaz in a pretty satin Stella McCartney number, and Kate Middleton in a black-and-white lace Temperley repeat, which she transformed with a bright red Alexander McQueen clutch. Which one is your favorite? Tell us by voting in the poll below!
What’s black and white all over? Celebrity style this season. Stars are taking over the red carpet (and the streets!) in black-and-white ensembles, and we love the graphic color combination! Jessica Alba wore a menswear-inspired black and white number by Narciso Rodriguez to the Environmental Media Awards, Kristen Stewart followed suit in a black-and-white Balenciaga design for the AFI fest screening of her new movie, On the Road, and Cameron Diaz opted for a more feminine take on the trend with a simple satin dress by Stella McCartney at the world premiere of her movie, Gambit, in London. Meanwhile, Gwen Stefani also stepped out across the pond earlier this fall wearing black leather pants, a white turtleneck, and a black blazer. Nicolas Ghesquière and Balenciaga are parting ways after 15 years. The creative director and the French house announced “the joint decision” this morning, and his last day will be November 30th. “Thank you Nicolas for bringing back all Cristobal Balenciaga’s values and creativity,” the house posted on its Facebook page today. François-Henri Pinault, the CEO of PPR, which owns Balenciaga, agreed in his official statement: “Cristóbal Balenciaga was a master, a genius whose avant-garde vision dictated fashion’s greatest trends and inspired generations of designers. With an incomparable creative talent, Nicolas has brought to Balenciaga an artistic contribution essential to the unique influence of the house.” Ghesquière joined the house in 1997 at 25 years old, and ever since has pushed Balenciaga to what it is today—a brand fronted by Kristen Stewart, worn by countless celebrities, and stocked at all of the major luxury retailers. He also memorably delivered one of the most popular “it” accessories, the Lariat bag, which still is, and always will be, a must-have. We can’t wait to see where Ghesquière goes next—and also who will fill his big shoes!

Kristen Stewart has earned a reputation for changing out of her red carpet garb and into comfy clothes—she always seems to have a pair of Converse close by—and she did it again at her On the Road premiere in Los Angeles this weekend. The actress walked the red carpet at the 2012 AFI Fest in a skin-baring bustier top and high-waisted black trousers by Balenciaga—Stewart is the face of the label’s Florabotanica fragrance—then changed into a more casual leather bomber jacket with a sheer Kain Label Soo tank in navy and blue jeans for the after-party. Tell us: Which look do you like better—red carpet glam or after-party casual? Vote in the poll below!
