Alexander Wang to Be Named New Balenciaga Creative Director

Nov 30, 2012 @ 9:55 am

After a week of rumors circling the fashion world that New York designer Alexander Wang would take exiting creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s place at Balenciaga, the news is confirmed! The label is expected to make the announcement next week, as Ghesquière’s official departure from the Parisian house is today. The 28-year-old designer’s appointment will prove to be interesting for Balenciaga—Wang’s downtown, punk rock-inspired designs have made him a favorite of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Miranda Kerr, and Rihanna, as well as a must-have for women around the world. ”Fashion shouldn’t be about what is appropriate,” he told InStyle‘s September 2011 issue. “Getting dressed is much more fun if it’s about satisfying you.” We can’t wait to see what he brings to the label!

The Black-and-White Trend: Which Stars Are Loving the Color Combo?

What’s black and white all over? Celebrity style this season. Stars are taking over the red carpet (and the streets!) in black-and-white ensembles, and we love the graphic color combination! Jessica Alba wore a menswear-inspired black and white number by Narciso Rodriguez to the Environmental Media Awards, Kristen Stewart followed suit in a black-and-white Balenciaga design for the AFI fest screening of her new movie, On the Road, and Cameron Diaz opted for a more feminine take on the trend with a simple satin dress by Stella McCartney at the world premiere of her movie, Gambit, in London. Meanwhile, Gwen Stefani also stepped out across the pond earlier this fall wearing black leather pants, a white turtleneck, and a black blazer. Balenciaga Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière Exits

Nov 5, 2012 @ 12:37 pm

Nicolas Ghesquière and Balenciaga are parting ways after 15 years. The creative director and the French house announced “the joint decision” this morning, and his last day will be November 30th. “Thank you Nicolas for bringing back all Cristobal Balenciaga’s values and creativity,” the house posted on its Facebook page today. François-Henri Pinault, the CEO of PPR, which owns Balenciaga, agreed in his official statement: “Cristóbal Balenciaga was a master, a genius whose avant-garde vision dictated fashion’s greatest trends and inspired generations of designers. With an incomparable creative talent, Nicolas has brought to Balenciaga an artistic contribution essential to the unique influence of the house.” Ghesquière joined the house in 1997 at 25 years old, and ever since has pushed Balenciaga to what it is today—a brand fronted by Kristen Stewartworn by countless celebrities, and stocked at all of the major luxury retailers. He also memorably delivered one of the most popular “it” accessories, the Lariat bag, which still is, and always will be, a must-have. We can’t wait to see where Ghesquière goes next—and also who will fill his big shoes!
