Alexander Wang as Balenciaga’s New Creative Director: “I Am Deeply Honored”

Dec 3, 2012 @ 10:10 am

It’s official: Alexander Wang is the new creative director of Balenciaga! PPR, the company that owns the label, confirmed the appointment today after a week of speculation. ”I am deeply honored to embark on this new role for a brand and house that I have such great admiration and respect for,” says the 28-year-old designer, who as creative director, will be responsible for the ready-to-wear collections for both men and women, accessories, and the brand’s image, in addition to leading his own eponymous labelWang takes the place of Nicolas Ghesquière, who left the company on Friday after 15 years, and follows in the footsteps of superstars like Oscar de la Renta, Emanuel Ungaro, and Hubert de Givenchy, who all led the house during their careers. Surely, this will be one of the most anticipated debuts of 2013. InStyle managing editor Ariel Foxman says: ”I cannot wait to see how Wang will bring his uniquely contemporary vision to such a lustrous, storied, and innovative fashion house.” Let the countdown to Wang’s first runway show for Balenciaga begin!

Alexander Wang to Be Named New Balenciaga Creative Director

Nov 30, 2012 @ 9:55 am

After a week of rumors circling the fashion world that New York designer Alexander Wang would take exiting creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s place at Balenciaga, the news is confirmed! The label is expected to make the announcement next week, as Ghesquière’s official departure from the Parisian house is today. The 28-year-old designer’s appointment will prove to be interesting for Balenciaga—Wang’s downtown, punk rock-inspired designs have made him a favorite of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Miranda Kerr, and Rihanna, as well as a must-have for women around the world. ”Fashion shouldn’t be about what is appropriate,” he told InStyle‘s September 2011 issue. “Getting dressed is much more fun if it’s about satisfying you.” We can’t wait to see what he brings to the label!

Punk Fashion to Take Over the Metropolitan Museum of Art

What’s up punks?! After 2011′s incredibly successful “Savage Beauty” exhibit focusing on the work of designer Alexander McQueen, and this year’s “Impossible Conversation” exhibit detailing the imaginary collaborations between Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli, the Costume Institue at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced its Spring 2013 exhibit as “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” The show—which will open May 9th and run through August 11—will detail the expansion of punk street style in the 1970s (think Pat Benatar, The Ramones) to its influence on modern-day high fashion. Designers in the exhibit will include Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and Alexander Wang, among others. “Since its origins, punk has had an incendiary influence on fashion,” Andrew Bolton, curator of The Costume Institute, said in a statement. “Designers continue to capture [punk's] youthful rebelliousness and aggressive forcefulness.” We can’t wait to see punk take over The Met!

Alexander Wang at New York Fashion Week: See the Glow-in-the-Dark Finale

Sep 9, 2012 @ 12:33 pm

Alexander Wang promised a “surprise ending” to his collection and we’d say glow-in-the-dark dresses qualify! For his grand finale, the designer cut the lights on nine ice-blond models, revealing that their seemingly-ivory outfits glowed with pastel hues. Our reporter snapped a shot of one of the futuristic-looking sheathes, which, we must say, looked positively party-ready. As the label tweeted, “Spring 2013: GLOW!”

Runway Looks We Love: Alexander Wang

Sep 8, 2012 @ 10:20 pm

True to form, Alexander Wang‘s spring accessories were striking and swoon-worthy. There was the statement shoe (minimal strappy garter boots) and a two-in-one standout bag perfect for work or weekend. The clothing, in stark white and black, featured sexy cutouts that revealed slivers of skin. In addition to supermodels Erin Wasson and Jourdan Dunn, Liberty Ross took to the runway to model the strong collection that included chic toppers like hooded windbreakers, cropped parkas and “molded” cable-knit muscle tanks. Wang has become known for surprise endings (for fall, Gisele Bundchen closed the show with her fellow supermodels) and this season was no exception. When the lights went down, it was revealed that the last grouping of white dresses glowed in the dark! See our favorite looks in the gallery!
