Michelle Obama’s Tracy Reese Dress Left Designer “A Little Mystified”

Oct 17, 2012 @ 1:07 pm

Michelle Obama knows how to wow a crowdjust look at her hot pink Michael Kors look from last night’s presidential debate. Though, the level in which people pay attention to her choices remains surprising to even those who dress her, including Tracy Reese, who created the red and silver dress the First Lady wore to speak at the Democratic National Convention. “I’m a little mystified,” she told us at the American Theater Ballet’s opening night gala in New York City last night. “I’m flattered. It’s interesting how much conversation got generated about her dress and nails, but for me, the night was all about her speech.” Yet, she knows the power of a good dress—the style will go on sale soon (it was rushed into production) and there is already a look inspired by Obama’s style in Reese’s collection for Anthropologie (shop it for $298 at anthropologie.com). ‘Tis election season!

Rachel Zoe may have presented her spring 2013 collection during New York Fashion Week, but the celebrity stylist-turned-designer staged a whole different kind of fashion show when she traveled to Europe for the Paris fashion shows—her own! The 41-year-old is a famous overpacker. (The photo above, showing the 13 suitcases she took to Paris with her last season, went viral.) During this trip, we spotted 12 looks in seven days. “I wish that I could say that I was a better packer,” Zoe told InStyle.com recently. “I’m a very organized packer, but I’m not good at editing. I like to have options. It’s always better to have choices rather than have nothing to wear.” Ah, choices, choices — we should all be so lucky to have so many! Click through the gallery to see Rachel Zoe’s mobile closet in action.

Runway Looks We Love: Elie Saab

Oct 4, 2012 @ 11:21 am

For a collection named “Heiress,” Elie Saab’s designs looked fittingly rich. The colors were opulent, with cobalt, white, teal, hot pink, and black in monochromatic and pattern combinations. The silhouettes looked equally lavish, with cocktail dresses and slacks blended with an array of office-ready dresses and short suits for day. No lady’s ensemble would be complete without ultra-chic accessories, and Saab offered a variety of bold heels and totes. No doubt ultra-fan and front row star Taylor Swift will be picking out her next glam moment from this lineup. Check out our favorite looks in the gallery.

Runway Looks We Love: Louis Vuitton

After showing a mod-inspired collection for his show in New York last month, Marc Jacobs continued the throwback theme for his latest lineup for Louis Vuitton in Paris, offering up an energetic collection dominated by a graphic check print. Jacobs modernized the retro looks—mosly in black, white, and yellow with shots of green—by showing sexy slivers of skin and adding bits of sparkle. For accessories, he delivered shoes (kitten-heeled and bow-adorned) and bags (structured and ladylike) as mod as the clothes. Check out our favorite looks in the gallery.

Runway Looks We Love: Alexander McQueen

Oct 4, 2012 @ 10:59 am

Call this collection Burton’s Bees. Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton’s Spring outing was abuzz with honeycomb motifs, veiled beekeeper hats, and warm shades of yellow, black, and gold. She opened the show with sleek suiting in waist-defining silhouettes, followed by corseted dresses in bold hues. Models walked the runway in sky-high heelless stunners with honeycomb mesh creeping up the foot (and in some cases, the entire leg). Meanwhile, jewel-encrusted chokers and cuffs added a heavy dose of sparkle, especially when paired with the evening gowns adorned in voluminous blossoms of 3D flowers. Check out our favorite looks in the gallery.

The City of Lights did itself proud with a week’s worth of epic fashion moments during Paris Fashion Week. At Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs posed his legions of models on mod (and moving!) escalators, while serious buzz went down at the bee-inspired Alexander McQueen collection. At Balenciaga, Kristen Stewart caught up with Salma Hayek, and at Christian Dior, where Raf Simons showed his debut ready-to-wear collection for the brand, eyes sparkled with Swarovski crystals. Jessica Chastain’s Vintage YSL Dress: The Behind-the-Scenes Story

Oct 3, 2012 @ 3:32 pm

As the face of Saint Laurent’s new Manifesto fragrance, Jessica Chastain earned herself a front-row seat to the label’s fashion show in Paris this week. What to wear for such an important event? The actress took a page out of YSL history, thanks to a little help from Decades, the Los Angeles luxury vintage boutique, and her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart. “We just ransacked our archives of original Yves Saint Laurents to find the quintessential Parisian look for the show,” Cameron Silver, co-owner and founder of Decades, told InStyle.com. Their pick: A black and white polka-dot Rive Gauche halter dress from the ‘80s. “It created a very modern yet timeless look,” he continued. “Elizabeth did the final fitting right before the show in Paris, since Jessica flew in from New York City where she is in rehearsals for The Heiress. I think my persistent texting may have been slightly distracting to the two of them, but I wanted to make sure we had Jess covered!” And covered she was—her look earned a coveted spot in InStyle’s Look of the Day section.
