Lupita Nyong’o, Alfre Woodard, and Oprah Toast African American Women In Film At the Annual Oscars Sistahs Soiree in Beverly HillsFeb 27, 2014 @ 2:59 pm
It was a night full of genuine sisterhood at the Alfre Woodard and Rémy Martin Annual Oscars Sistahs Soiree, where some of Hollywood’s leading ladies toasted African American women in film and honored stars Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Naomie Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), and Yolanda Ross (Go For Sisters) for their remarkable achievements in entertainment. ”I’m honored to be in that room with that group of women. I mean the guest list is shocking and to be honored in that room it means a lot,” Nyong’o tells InStyle. “I’ve been looking forward to this day, so I’m keen to go down there and be with them…so it’s a great night.”
The 29 guests—which included Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Rosario Dawson, and more— sat down around a table decorated with monochromatic red bloom centerpieces where they not only enjoyed a three-course meal of pepper-crusted seared Ahi tuna and vegan and gluten-free delicacies, but the women bonded over shared intimate conversations. “We put four [women] out as honoraries, but then have many toasts at the table. Everybody was able to stand up and say, you know what, I saw you in this this year and that was so great. You recognize all the contributions,” Woodard explains to InStyle. “This is all the African-American women who’ve ever been nominated before in the acting category. It is for a specific reason and it was during Oscar week to get these women together first of all, so before they go out onto the carpet into the world [they] know that there are all these sisters who are pulling for them,” she adds. “By gathering us together, that becomes our frame of reference for each other and we’re walking the same journey.” To go inside the intimate evening, look through our gallery to see what the stars had to say about their special sisterhood.
Behind every pair of retro aviator sunglasses, sequin- and leather-adorned dresses, and fur coats seen in the Oscar-nominated blockbuster hit American Hustle, is costume designer Michael Wilkinson. The man responsible for the ’70s-inspired looks managed to make each piece in the film look effortlessly modern, while taking a unique spin on the outfits. So in anticipation of the upcoming Academy Awards this Sunday we decided to dig a little deeper to find out how he chose the looks for the film, and what it was really like to dress Amy Adams.
“We really wanted to think outside the box and not do your typical 1970′s film,” explains Wilkinson at the 2014 Costume Designer Guild Awards. “David O. Russell had to really encourage me to go very, very deep with my investigation of these characters and to sort of get outside of my usual comfort zone and be a little bold with my decisions. So looks like it’s sort of paying off.”
The film—which stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and Bradley Cooper—has earned ten Academy Award nominations for the leading stars (Bale, Adams, Lawrence, Cooper), director, costume designer, and the ensemble as a whole. ”It was just such an honor to work with five of the most gifted actors on the planet and to create with them, these very idiosyncratic, highly imaginative characters,” Wilkinson added. “We really wanted to make it such a really full‑bodied film that was just surging with life and we’re glad. You know all of these actors are so impassioned. Their triumphs are huge, but their flaws are also pretty huge. And so it’s great to really show that full spectrum of humanity.”
As for dressing Adams in those sexy deep v-neck ensembles (see the gunmetal sequined gown above), Wilkinson was only left in awe when it came to collaborating with the Golden Globe-winning actress—who was also honored with the Lacoste Spotlight Award at the CDG Awards. “She’s the ultimate chameleon. She can play a nun, or a princess and now in our film, she’s just this incredible seductress and hustler. And there’s nothing she can’t do,” he says. “She’s very professional and she was there in the fitting room with me for hours. We had forty costume changes to work out, and we see her in the film transform from a simple small town girl to the most sophisticated dresser in Manhattan. It was great to trot that journey with her.”

We may be keeping up with the Kardashian sisters on TV, but off-screen, the trio has been keeping up with the hottest runway and red carpet trends to create new spring pieces for their Kardashian Kollection for Sears. “The inspiration for this season’s collection is a modern take on the romance of spring,” Khloe tells InStyle.com exclusively. “The pastel palette, which is flattering on every skin tone, is new for the collection, but felt just like the perfect pop of color for the long summer days ahead.” The stunning campaign photos prove that monochromatic looks have just as big of an impact as intricate prints, though the sisters didn’t leave the latter out of the mix.
The stars — and their style choices — have come a long way since the Kardashian Kollection first launched, and the latest range stays true to each of their current looks. “Each of us loves to experiment with fashion, and we have key items that we know looks best on our bodies. Each piece in the collection is something we would want to wear, but might style differently,” Khloe tells us. “For example, Kim will wear our pencil skirt with one of the jersey blouses, where I might pair it with a moto jacket.” Khloe notes the blazers and jackets as a few of her favorites, with the sleeveless leopard jumpsuit as the standout piece. “I love it for its versatility,” she says. “It’s easy to wear under a blazer for daytime for a more conservative look, and then you can be ready for a night out in seconds by taking off the blazer and baring your shoulders.” Shop the full lineup now at sears.com, then catch Khloe as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, airing next Monday, March 3 at 9 PM EST on Logo.

Naomi Watts and Kate Hudson Celebrate 130 Years of Bulgari At the “Decades of Glamour” Party in HollywoodFeb 26, 2014 @ 4:15 pm
It was a night full of white roses, jewels, and some of Hollywood’s biggest stars at Bulgari‘s “Decades of Glamour,” which kicked off the 2014 Academy Awards and celebrated 130 years of — you guessed it — glamour. “They’ve been around for more than a hundred years and their stuff from the archives is amazing. They continue to be strong and the modern stuff is really incredible as well,” says Naomi Watts, the host of the evening’s party. The space at the Soho House on the Garden Terrace in West Hollywood displayed various Bulgari earrings and matching diamond necklaces, mixed in with framed portraits of A-listers who have worn pieces from the famed jeweler at numerous red carpet events—including Watts herself, Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, and Nicole Kidman.
Joining the host—who added a colorful vintage Bulgari necklace to her black strapless Altuzurra dress—were fellow actresses including Emmy Rossum, Ashley Greene, and Kate Hudson, who also wore pieces from the Bulgari collection in honor of night. “There’s something about it that for me [is] iconically ’70s—I love ’70s—and they still sort of hold onto that,” Hudson explains to InStyle.com. “They’re just a great jewelry house and their stones are incredible. The colors are just beautiful, they really know what they’re doing.” As for Hudson’s choice of jewels, she picked a stunning Bulgari pendent necklace that matched her bold Emilio Pucci ensemble. “I love yellow,” says Hudson. “Yellow’s a happy color.” To see more stars from the diamond-studded party, look through our gallery!

Tonight, comic genius Seth Meyers trades his shared desk at Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update for a solo seat as host of Late Night, taking over Jimmy Fallon‘s former seat. Since this zinger king has years of experience staying up while most of us are getting ready for bed, we asked him how he rolls after-hours — really! One choice activity? Late night eBay searches for old-school football memorabilia, with which he plans to deck out his new office. “I’m currently very nostalgic about the football teams of my youth. Also being married now, I realize that a lot of the crappy stuff I used to hang up in my apartment now is not going up in my apartment,” he tells InStyle exclusively. “So I’m like ‘Oh, I’ll get these old Pittsburgh Steelers posters, but I’ll put them up in my new work office. If you’re currently bidding on something that is Steelers-related, and if you are losing to someone, it’s likely me.” Keep scrolling to find out what else Meyers gets up to when the sun goes down, then catch his first Late Night show on NBC tonight at 12:35 AM EST. From the days of Cleopatra, eyeliner has gone through its fair share of trends—from the iconic cat eye, the smokey grunge look, to a winged eye—and this season it’s all about the liner effect seen in Marc Jacobs‘ spring/summer runway show. Today, eyeliner is all about straight lines and a precise look in unexpected colors and shapes (rimmed halfway along the lower lash line) and InStyle‘s Beauty Director Kahlana Barfield gives you exclusive tips on how you can achieve this new rocker look!
“If your hand tends to shake, hold your eyelid taut so that the skin is firm and it’s not wobbly. It’s easier to draw a straight line with an eyeliner pencil,” suggests Barfield in the video above. “The key to drawling a precise line is really about making sure your pencil is very sharp, so sharpen it before you apply it and that way you get this really clean, thin line,” she adds. Get more details by watching the full video clip, plus shop some of Barfield’s suggested eyeliner pens—including Marc Jacobs’ Highliner gel crayon ($25) and Urban Decay’s Glide-On eye pencil ($19)—just by clicking over to 20th.instyle.com.
