Lady Gaga Wears the Iconic Versace Safety Pin Dress

Oct 3, 2012 @ 12:33 pm

For the first time since Liz Hurley donned it in 1994—instantly making her a household name—the iconic Gianni Versace safety-pin dress has stepped out again! Lady Gaga wore the infamous black silk crepe creation during her visit to Milan (where she met with Donatella Versace), mirroring Hurley’s full look with her newly brown hair and modest gold earrings. The dress caused a fashion frenzy upon its debut, and InStyle editor-at-large Hal Rubenstein counts it as his favorite dress of all time. He describes it in his book 100 Unforgettable Dresses as “devilishly engineered,” with a “ravine-deep neckline, thigh-high slit, double-fastened straps, and open rib cage, secured by a half dozen pronged Medusas.” Versace himself denied that Hurley even had a fitting for the dress, that he just “knew [she] would look simply bellissima, perfetto.” We think Gianni, who died in 1998, would have been gaga for the update. Tell us: do you think Gaga pulls off the look?

Where Does Elizabeth Hurley Find All Those Pink Clothes?

As the longtime spokesperson (18 years!) for the Estee Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, Elizabeth Hurley needs a lot of pink clothing. As it turns out, finding shades of rose, fuchsia, peony, and more pretty pinks is a year-round project. “We pretty much monopolize everything pink that comes into any collection ever,” she told InStyle.com at the opening of the Campaign’s 20th Anniversary exhibition in New York City (find out how to donate to the cause on Facebook here!). “We have a wonderful stylist that works with us and she’ll always email me, ‘We found another pink dress! Michael Kors has a pink dress, Issa has a pink dress!’ So we hoard them up, because there’s not a lot of pink around.” While in Milan for the Roberto Cavalli show last week, Hurley snuck in a bit of shopping:  ”I managed to walk off with about six pink things in my suitcase, many of which have been worn today already. We raid anywhere we can.” And all in the name of a good cause!

Oct 2, 2012 @ 2:32 pm

Use your Facebook time to make a difference! Estee Lauder is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and the legacy of co-founder Mrs. Evelyn H. Lauder by donating $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every post on their timeline during the month of October. “I feel we’ve achieved so much in twenty years,” longtime spokesmodel Elizabeth Hurley told InStyle.com at the opening of the charity’s interactive exhibition in New York City. “In some ways it’s very bittersweet because we don’t have Evelyn Lauder with us, but she really dedicated the last twenty years of her life to this cause and I feel that so much come to fruition.” Find out more about the campaign and make your post at facebook.com/BCACampaign.

The Safety Pin Dress Returns on Kate Moss: Which Is Your Favorite?

Aug 14, 2012 @ 1:15 pm

Supermodel Kate Moss stepped out in London last night—not long after her fabulous showing at the Olympic Closing Ceremony—wearing a Moschino Cheap & Chic LBD covered in gold safety pins. This reminded us (obviously) of Elizabeth Hurley’s black silk crepe Versace dress, which made the then 29-year-old world famous overnight. (The 1994 dress is still unforgettable almost two decades later, deemed “instantly inseparable, incredible, combustible, derisible, and globally inescapable” by InStyle fashion director Hal Rubenstein.) Before Moss, Twilight Saga star Kristen Stewart also resurrected the Power of Safety Pins look when she donned a red Balmain mini at the MTV Movie Awards last year. So, which dress is your favorite? Vote in the poll below!  More

Elizabeth Hurley’s Sapphire Engagement Ring!

Oct 3, 2011 @ 2:40 pm

Another famous Brit got a big sapphire engagement ring! Australian cricket player Shane Warne proposed to actress and breast cancer activist Elizabeth Hurley with a square-cut sapphire flanked by two trillion-cut white diamonds this weekend. “Thanks for all your congratulations,” the pair said in identical tweets. Warne also said how he got down on one knee in a romantic, private setting to pop the question. The only problem? “Left knee is sore!” he wrote. Congratulations to the happy couple!
