Happy Hunger Games! For Panem’s resident style-setter Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), more is always more. Costume designer Trish Summerville continues to push the boundaries, costuming Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark’s Capitol caretaker in over-the-top, off-the-runway looks. But it’s not all about the outfits — her matching hair and makeup are equally important in achieving her vibrant looks. After all, her defining style characteristic is the ever-changing color of her hair. And while all of her looks can be defined as “outrageous,” we’ve picked our five favorites to celebrate the release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
The Hunger Games’ Costume Designer Trish Summerville Dishes on Dressing the Cast and Shares A Secret About J.Law’s Fall at The OscarsNov 20, 2013 @ 2:47 pm
It’s rare to find fresh-off-the-runway fashion in action-packed films, but, thanks to Trish Summerville, The Hunger Games series plays equally with action and Alexander McQueen. Summerville, who was awarded Costume Designer of the Year at the 2013 Style Awards, has been creating iconic pop culture looks for quite some time, including Christina Aguilera’s leather chaps getup in her Dirty video and Rooney Mara’s eerie-chic style in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The costume designer even told us she crafted the prominent biker jacket Mara rocks throughout the film. Summerville dished to InStyle on how she prepares to costume a blockbuster hit and how Elizabeth Banks morphs into character (above in a red-ruffled McQueen frock). Plus, she shared a tiny little secret on the graceful fall Jennifer Lawrence took in Dior Haute Couture on her way up to the Oscars stage last February.

Beach weekend, here we come! Elizabeth Banks is set for summer in Splendid’s flirty Parisian Tulip romper ($118; shopbop.com). To give a romper a sophisticated, grown-up appeal, take a cue from Banks and pair it with a wedge or a high heel. She added inches with Coach’s Gemma style ($149; coach.com).

Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks swapped her blond hair for a darker hue, debuting her newly-dyed locks in Los Angeles yesterday. “I think my personality is that of a brunette—that’s what gives me a little edge,” Banks had told InStyle. So, do you like her “edge” or do you prefer her lighter look? Tell us by voting in the poll.

If you haven’t already picked out your outfit for New Year’s Eve, it’s time to start the last-minute search! Sure, there are always the standbys (something sparkly, something black, and something snug), but if you want something different, consider a jumpsuit. ”For the daring, try a jumpsuit,” say styling duo (and sisters!) Wendi and Nicole, who work with Elizabeth Banks and Octavia Spencer. “Height is a must for shoes, but make sure they are comfortable so you can dance the night away.” Go for it, ladies!
