Every dress that hits the Oscars red carpet this Sunday will be special, but the one that will be worn by Skyfall Bond Girl Naomie Harris will be different than any other. That’s because she’s going to be representing the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative, a design contest started by James Cameron’s wife Suzy Amis Cameron, in which Harris will wear the winning design made of completely sustainable materials. This year, the contest winner is Michael Badger, a Ghanian-born fashion student at Atlanta’s Savannah College of Art & Design (above right). Part of his prize is getting the mentorship of a fashion designer when creating the piece, and the infamous Vivienne Westwood stepped in for this year’s duties. Currently, the mentor-student duo is putting the finishing touches on Harris’s gown—they shared this exclusive behind-the-scenes photo with InStyle.com—and it will be revealed this Sunday, February 24th on the Academy Awards red carpet. ”I’m thrilled,” Harris said of being involved. We can’t wait to see it debut!

Dita Von Teese’s Advice for Shopping Vintage

Jan 16, 2013 @ 12:31 pm

No one wears vintage clothing quite like burlesque star Dita Von Teese, who has been collecting pieces for more than 25 years. “I started wearing vintage because I couldn’t even afford designer jeans,” Von Teese (in a blue velvet dress from the 1930s) told InStyle.com at Dior Beauty’s dinner celebrating Hollywood glamour. “I couldn’t keep up with my friends in high school so I bought vintage clothes that were cheaper.” So there’s no better person to ask for tips on how to shop for standout items! “Choose things that look modern,” Von Teese told InStyle.com. “Notice, in modern clothes, where the references are in vintage. Look for the parallels between [modern designers] like Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier and vintage clothing.” And that’s not all. “Also, go for things that are fairly simplistic and have a nice shape,” Von Teese said. ”I know I’m successful at shopping for vintage  when people say, ‘Is that Galliano, Dior, Westwood, or Prada?’ And I say, ‘No, I bought it on eBay for $40!’”

Jessie J’s Bodysuits at the Olympics Closing Ceremony: Love Them or Leave Them?

Aug 13, 2012 @ 11:10 am

The Olympics Closing Ceremony—dubbed A Symphony of British Music—brought about many “really?!” moments, and one of our favorites was Jessie J’s leave-nothing-to-the-imagination wardrobe. The 24-year-old songstress, who is as famous for her hit “Price Tag” as she is for penning the lyrics to hits by Miley Cyrus and her quirky wardrobe, wore two curve-hugging asymmetrical bodysuits from the archive of British designer Vivienne Westwood. “Tonight is a night to always remember and never forget,” she tweeted after belting out her Top 40 song, and renditions of The Bee Gees’ “You Should Be Dancing” and Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” Her single-sleeve, single-leg looks are definitely memorable! Tell us, what do you think of her finale wardrobe: Love it or leave it?

Dita Von Teese’s Awesome Jewelry Storage Idea

Mar 31, 2011 @ 11:00 am

With all the gorgeous jewelry spotted on the red carpet, we’re often left wondering, where does it go? That’s what we asked Dita Von Teese when we caught up with her at Vivienne Westwood’s store opening in Los Angeles last night. “I designed a special edition jewel box for Cointreau [liquor],” Von Teese (in a Vivienne Westwood dress and Philip Treacy hat) told us. “I keep my jewelry in there, but I have a really big collection of jewelry, so I also took picture frames and padded them with red velvet and I pin all the brooches on it, so they make wall art.” What a crafty idea! Click through the gallery to see the rest of the Westwood party-goers—including Malin Akerman, Anna Kendrick, and Christina Hendricks, the face of Westwood’s Get a Life Palladium jewelry collection—and read some of their jewelry-storing tricks, too.

Celebrities have caught on to cobalt! Demi Moore wore the blue hue when she attended the Costume Designers Guild Awards in a strapless Vivienne Westwood gown last month, while Olivia Munn stepped out this weekend in an electric blue Marchesa dress belted with a matching sash. Abbie Cornish showed up to last week’s Sucker Punch premiere in a cobalt Amanda Wakeley frock, and Dita Von Teese stopped by Perez Hilton’s birthday bash on Saturday in a sequined Jenny Packham number. Would you wear this bold color? Tell us in the comments!
