You could feel the positive energy anywhere you turned in The Plaza in New York City last night, as amfAR’s 4th Annual Inspiration Gala took over the space and filled it with uplifting moments. “I’m here because of the heroic people who have dedicated their lives to finding the cure for AIDS,” Uma Thurman (in Versace) told InStyle.com as she arrived to the event, which raised money and awareness for AIDS research and advocacy projects around the world. “I’m just bringing my love and energy and my prayers to their mission.” Before the gala started, the evening began with a military-themed fashion show made up of looks donated by leading menswear designers, including Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, and Michael Kors. Kenneth Cole, amfAR’s Chair of the Board, happily played along: “I’m wearing fatigues to anticipate anything that could come of tonight—I’m prepared for it,” he joked to InStyle.com.

After the bumping runway beats faded, guests made their way to the ballroom where Thurman got down to business giving out honors while guests bid on silent auction items as they dined. “What’s special about this evening is that we’re honoring them not for their artistic achievements but for their ability to inspire us,” Thurman said of the honorees. Valentino earned the Award for Inspiration, accepted on his behalf by Iman (in Valentino), Alan Cumming took home the Award of Courage, and Jennifer Lopez (in Tom Ford) received the Humanitarian Award. “I’m deeply touched,” Lopez said tearfully. “I’m grateful that I have the opportunity of helping to improve the lives of others even if it’s in a small little way. We all just need to do a little bit and then all of a sudden all these amazing things happen.” The evening concluded with a group sing-a-long to “Call Me Maybe” spearheaded by the hitmaker herself, Carly Rae Jepsen. The fashion world is in mourning: Annabel Tollman, former fashion director and stylist to the stars, passed away in her sleep last week at age 39. The British stylist became known for her her ability to highlight the female figure, which led her to dress a range of body types and personalities in Hollywood, including Scarlett Johansson (in Valentino), Anne Hathaway (in Nina Ricci), the Olsen twins, and Kristen Wiig (in J. Mendel). Her sartorial vision, her keen eye, and her old-Hollywood glamour aesthetic will be missed. In her memory, click to see several of the memorable celebrity looks she put together for the red carpet.

Valentino Designs Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s Wedding Dress: All the Details

This is what Valentino comes out of retirement for! Only the best, of course. Last year, it was Anne Hathaway’s wedding dress. This year, it’s a princess. The designer, who retired from fashion in 2008, brushed off his sketching hands to create the wedding dress for Princess Madeleine of Sweden for her wedding to New York banker Christopher O’Neill, held at the Royal Palace Church in Stockholm on Saturday, June 8. “Working with Princess Madeleine has just been so easy,” Valentino said in a statement. “She is very lovely girl. She is modern, fun, full of energy and enthusiasm, and she is so beautiful! It has been a pleasure and an honor.” The dress he created is made with silk organdies and applications of ivory Chantilly lace. The train was four meters long. The veil measured six meters long, crafted with silk organdies with tulle edges and Chantilly lace flowers. The waist had small vertical pleats the spread out to the skirt. Topping it off, orange blossoms decorated her royal tiara. The Princess is 31 (as of June 10), and the youngest daughter of the King and Queen of Sweden. She is fourth in line to the throne.

Kim Kardashian’s Maternity Style Includes Wearing Shoes Designed by Kanye West (Aww…)

Apr 23, 2013 @ 12:30 pm

Kim Kardashian’s maternity style has turned heads and started conversations, as the reality star has not shied away from curve-hugging silhouettes and sky-high stilettos throughout her pregnancy. And her shopping jaunt in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood yesterday was no different: She strode across the downtown sidewalk in a black Stella McCartney dress and matching Valentino cardigan. However, it’s the footwear that’s our favorite part of this outfit because the sandals are a little ode to her boyfriend and father of her unborn baby Kanye West. The wing-covered heels are part of the collection Giuseppe Zanotti designed in honor of West’s Cruel Summer album last year—the white pair she’s wearing are from last season, but this spring they’re available in a black and gold version, shown here. Find them for $1,500 on colette.fr.

Louise Roe Tells InStyle All About Her Fashion Star Outfit, Week 6

Apr 12, 2013 @ 2:30 pm

This dress is a true showstopper. It’s made by my friends [Connie Majoros and Fannie Chan] who run their own New York-based label, Femmes d’Armes. The first time I saw it on the hanger, my jaw dropped! I paired it with super cheap Zara studded heels that I’ve had in my closet for years, some plastic bracelets I got at the Valentino party last year, and a crazy ring from Topshop. I love to mix high and low. For the hair, we wanted to give it a messy boho vibe to balance out the glamorous feel of the dress, so for the first time ever, I tried a braid. At first we added a hair piece, but it made the braid so long and full it felt unnatural, so last minute right before I was due on stage, we whipped it out and threw together a new braid. I love how it turned out!
