Olympics 2012 Designer Uniforms: Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, and More!

Designers are going for the Olympic gold! First, Ralph Lauren announced his plans to create Olympic Village and closing ceremony looks for Team USA, then Stella McCartney unveiled her athletic gear for Team Great Britain. Now, Giorgio Armani is dressing Italy’s athletes in sleek white and midnight blue sportswear. “I am very honored to participate with these great colleagues,” Armani said at the unveiling of his Olympic Village collection. “This will be the most fashionable Olympic Games ever.” We can’t wait to see which designer Team France will wear! The editors who watch the Ralph Lauren show always erupt in cheers after the legendary designer presents his collection—but this season the applause came early when the soundtrack from crowd favorite Downton Abbey played over the speakers as the first look hit the runway. Some of the classicism of Downton applied to the collection, like menswear-tailored suits, head-to-toe black looks topped off with high hats and canes, and boyish separates in shades of camel, brown, and heather gray. Quickly, those styles gave way to an ultra-glamorous evening vibe fit for a royal with beaded embellishments, luxe velvets, and eye-catching jolts of fuchsia. Oprah Winfrey entertained some of Hollywood’s hottest in honor of close friend Ralph Lauren and his commitment to charity at Lincoln Center in New York City last night. The evening started with a conversation with the designer talk inspiration, success, and family, which was then followed by a dinner to jointly benefit the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (they raised over $7 million). Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Camilla Belle, and Jessica Alba were just a few of the celebrities who showed up to toast to the legendary designer, all wearing looks he created. “I have a lot of Ralph Lauren!” Belle told InStyle.com before being whisked inside the event. Ralph Lauren’s spring 2012 collection was inspired by the flapper fashion of the Roaring ’20s. For day, Lauren showed boyish suiting in both long and short styles, and a soft palette of jade, robin’s egg blue, celadon, blush and ivory made the lineup feel light-as-air on the runway. Evening looks were full-on glamorous, exemplified by beaded gowns topped with ostrich feather capes.
