Rachel Roy Advises Against the Hand-on-Hips Pose

Oct 16, 2011 @ 10:00 am

Stop putting your hand on your hip when you take pictures!” That’s the advice designer Rachel Roy gave Gabrielle Union and Sanaa Lathan recently. Both celebrities put the strategy to work at an event for Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project this week—wearing Rachel Roy looks, of course—where they diligently kept their hands at their sides for photographers. “This was our first time on the carpet without our hand on our hip,” Union told InStyle.com. “I felt a little less confident. I’d gotten used to posing that way.” Lathan agreed: “It was so hard. I went through withdrawal!” So why did Roy tell them to ditch the hand-on-hip moment? “I think she just thinks it is cooler when you’re not looking like a pageant girl,” Union explained. “In this day and age of Toddlers and Tiaras, she’s like, ‘Enough!’” Do you agree?

Runway Looks We Love: Rachel Roy

Sep 12, 2011 @ 7:00 pm

InStyle contributor Rachel Roy presented a mix of masculine and feminine for her spring 2012 collection. Soft pastels and florals offset stark black and white, while slouchy layers felt instantly polished thanks to wide leather belts. She also added a few pajama-inspired outfits in the form of washed silk pajama pants and crinkled georgette tunics, a look the designer recently tried herself for a red-carpet event. As for evening, Roy offered shape-enhancing silhouettes, such as a bustier paired with a pencil skirt. Click through the gallery for our favorite looks from the Rachel Roy collection.

InStyle contributor Rachel Roy teamed up with basketball star Amar’e Stoudemire to create a capsule collection of courtside-ready clothes, and the new looks are available now! “I love that Amar’e has a very strong point of view,” Roy told InStyle.com exclusively. “He knows how to push the boundaries, which I really like. If someone his height [6’10”] wants to wear something pink and tight, that’s great. It just shows people that they don’t have to look like everyone else.” Their collaboration includes tees, tanks and sweatpants, with some leather pieces in sporty silhouettes thrown into the mix. Find the styles, priced from $49 to $229, on RachelRoy.com.

Rachel Roy Wore Pajamas to a Premiere: Here’s Why!

Aug 9, 2011 @ 10:30 am

Designer Rachel Roy took comfortable dressing to whole new level when she walked the red carpet at last night’s One Day premiere in a set of striped pajamas! “I have an eleven-year-old and I like to show her that it’s OK to take fashion risks and to have fun and tell a story with fashion,” Roy told InStyle. “I tweeted this weekend that you can’t have style without confidence and I really do genuinely believe that. I also believe in balance. It was hard for me to find something to go with these shoes where I didn’t feel too dressed up and too done. So I thought, this is how I can wear these shoes by Mr. Blahnik!” Roy’s pajamas are currently available for $138 at Bedhead.com. Tell us, what do you think of her playful premiere look?

What It’s Like to Dress Michelle Obama

Apr 14, 2011 @ 1:50 pm

“Many people say that Michelle Obama is a fashion icon, but she’s not—she’s a style icon,” said Kate Betts, author of  Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style, at a New York Public Library lecture about First Lady Style this week. “She’s not necessarily wearing the latest trends walking down the runway. She’s wearing what she wants to wear.” Betts, along with designers Rachel Roy, Sophie Theallet, and Peter Soronen went on to discuss what it’s like to dress the FLOTUS, as all three designers have in the past.
