5 Questions for Spring Breakers Costume Designer Heidi Bivens

Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Benson spend a good deal of screen time in Spring Breakers in neon bikinis, crop tops, and short-shorts—the film is about spring break, after all—and there’s one woman they can thank for their fun and flattering beach closets: costume designer Heidi Bivens. Bivens created each character’s collection of perfect (and often pink) two-pieces, and fans have loved the looks so much, she even collaborated with Opening Ceremony on a Breakers-inspired capsule, complete with the film’s signature unicorn emblazoned on tees, tanks, towels, and string bikinis. That’s why we caught up with the designer, who spilled on Selena and the girls, what it takes to wear a two-piece around the clock, and what you should be looking for in a suit for your own spring break adventure. Donna Karan on the DKNY ’90s Styles: “They’re Just as Fresh Today as They Were”

Feb 1, 2013 @ 12:51 pm

DKNY’s ’90s styles are back in stores today! Reissues of the brand’s iconic NYC-screened tees, bodysuits, and dresses are back and available at openingceremony.us, so when we saw Donna Karan at last night’s New York premiere of Side Effects, the designer told InStyle.com how she really feels about the decade. “If the ’90s are making a comeback, God bless it, maybe I’ll have a good collection this season!” the designer told InStyle.com with a giggle. “To me, [those designs] are as fresh today as they were then. And that’s the beauty of what I try to do—clothes that are timeless, seasonless, effortless, iconic.” And no need to overthink your wardrobe choices: “I think sometimes fashion gets too caught up with itself. It’s just great clothes that you want to wear.”

The nineties are making a serious resurgence these days—members of generation Y can rejoice at the return of brands like Herbal Essences, Jane Cosmetics, and, now, DKNY. The brand is reissuing 15 of its archival runway styles from the 1991-1994 era through Opening Ceremony, including logo hoodies, NYC-skyline tees, maxi dresses, and the ultimate 90s look: the bodysuit. “DKNY was a pioneer of streetwear fashion in the 90s,” Opening Ceremony co-founder Carol Lim said in a statement. “We have been longtime fans of the brand and were very excited to bring back select, quintessential styles that feel fresh even today.” The collection, which hits shelves and openingceremony.us on February 1, ranges between $145 and $665.

Kenzo’s Vans Collection for Opening Ceremony: The Final Round!

Sep 26, 2012 @ 2:22 pm

Japanese fashion brand Kenzo has rolled out the final designs—for fall/winter—from its adorable Vans collaboration for hipster-chic retailer Opening Ceremony, and we’re super-charmed by the cute patterns! The standout pair, called “Heard It Through The Grapevine,” features, well, grapes, and leaves against either a white or black background (depending on whether you’re a more classic sneaker kind of girl, or into something a with a little more drama.) We also love the “marble black and white” and the “moth blue and black.” Shop the whole collection here! And we have a feeling Kristen Stewart might be into these—she loves wearing kicks on the red carpet.
