And the countdown has begun! There’s only a little more than a week left until the fall/winter 2014 collections debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, which means you only have a finite amount of time to memorize the schedule before the fashion frenzy hits Manhattan (and Brooklyn, this time around). Read ahead for a breakdown of when and where your favorite designers are showing this season.
We Played Stylist! Here’s How We Would Dress Kerry Washington, Amy Adams and Lena Dunham for the Golden GlobesJan 10, 2014 @ 4:01 pm
At the moment, it seems as though nothing will quell our excitement for the Golden Globes. In anticipation of finding out who will be wearing who down the red carpet, we played stylist and narrowed down our favorite gowns for three leading ladies: Kerry Washington, Amy Adams and Lena Dunham. Read on to see our winning picks for each nominee:
What she wore at last year’s Golden Globes: A sheer beaded Miu Miu
What we can see her in this year: This tiered Marchesa creation (middle). Her style is a complex blend that manages to fuse a fierce, fashion-forward attitude with sweet, soft styles. And thanks to her history with the brand, we know a Marchesa gown wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.
What we’d love to see her try: A sleek burgundy J. Mendel gown (right). Even though the color is infinitely richer and bolder than what Washington typically favors on the red carpet, the gown’s off-shoulder straps and intricate bodice hold a daring-yet-romantic aesthetic.
What she wore at last year’s Golden Globes: A mermaid Marchesa design
What we can see her in this year: An embellished baby-blue Badgley Mischka (middle). The softness and opulence are both in line with what she wore last year, plus the deep sexy neckline is a perfect fit after all the plunging silhouettes from her role in American Hustle!
What we’d love to see her try: This Chanel Couture stunner (right). The mermaid silhouette is one she’s familiar with, but we dare her to inject some edge with a gown that fearlessly mixes texture and metals, complete with the severe pulled back ‘do.
What she wore at last year’s Golden Globes: A plum off-the-shoulder Zac Posen gown
What we can see her in this year: This Valentino Couture gown (middle). Judging from Dunham’s history on the red carpet, we’ve discovered that she gravitates toward dresses that 1) are in jeweled tones, 2) boast bold prints, and 3) flares out at the waist. The gown we’ve chosen for her embodies all three.
What we’d love to see her try: A Marc Jacobs design (right). The uncensored actress is famous for venturing out into unknown territory (in life, in Girls and even in fashion), so this out-there sheer Victorian-inspired gown is right up her alley.
Houston, we have a style-setter! With Sandra Bullock‘s new space-thriller Gravity co-starring George Clooney out in theaters today, we can’t help but stay fixated on the actress’s out-of-this-world red carpet looks that have made it to our Look of the Day section, almost every day. Starting with the 70th edition of the Venice Film Festival, Bullock wowed everyone in a bold red strapless J. Mendel silk bustier gown with a high-low hem and from that moment, she set the bar for her red carpet moments. Then it was off to Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival where the 48-year-old actress pulled off the color-blocking trend with a black-teal-and-pearl Narciso Rodriguez strapless frock, which according to her stylist Elizabeth Stewart, “we were going to go with something different, more gown-like, but we went with this and it worked.” When it was back in the States for the New York City premiere, Bullock wore another stellar look, this time a white draped Giambattista Valli mini dress with matching black-and-white Giuseppe Zanotti stilettos. The Emmys recognize the talented teams that work their magic in front (and behind) the silver screens. But really, it’s the night for men and women alike to pull out all the stops. We’re talking about A-listers dripping in jewels, flashing all-over sequins, toting decadent clutches and more. Last night, we scouted the red carpet and rounded up the top fashion and beauty trends that will set the style bar for the rest of the year and beyond. Tina Fey (in Narciso Rodriguez) and Zooey Deschanel (in J. Mendel) stunned in shades of blue, Rose Byrne (in Calvin Klein) and Taylor Schilling (in Thakoon) proved that minimalism is still best. In beauty news, Kate Mara and Kerry Washington went natural in petal lips; and Sarah Hyland and Zosia Mamet reminded us that nail art isn’t going anywhere. It may be the first day of fall, but it was all pastels on the red carpet at the 2013 Emmy Awards! From Claire Danes (in Armani Prive) to Rose Byrne (in Calvin Klein), the stars went with gowns in nudes, blush pinks, silvers and even sheer. The trend went as far as the bling as seen by Zooey Deschanel‘s the pale blue Chanel ring that she wore to match her ice blue J.Mendel gown and even Allison Williams got in on the trend wearing a light pink Fred Leighton topaz rock. The pale shades also made their beauty mark with celebrities like Kerry Washington who matched her neutral lip color to her rose gold Marchesa gown, while Padma Lakshmi‘s ’70s inspired eyeshadow coordinated with her light blue Kaufmanfranco gown.
It’s almost fall! And with a new season comes a wardrobe update. Our editors scoped out the best trends you’ll be wanting to wear to kick off your seasonal refresh. From cobalt (as seen at J. Mendel) to romantic dresses (as seen in Lanvin) to punctuations of plaid (as seen at Calvin Klein) to simply elegant designs (as seen at Bottega Veneta), these are the styles that will be most crucial to your look. Hello, sports fans! Chrissy Teigen, Malin Akerman, Selena Gomez and Olivia Wilde were among the fashionable stars who walked the red carpet next to the biggest names in basketball, tennis, gymnastics and beyond at last night’s 2013 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles — but move over Michael Phelps and Shaq, all we had our eyes on were their outfits. This annual event is no all-out gown affair, but the bright and fun summer looks the stars chose made this red carpet worth checking out. These four went for eye-popping primary hues, with Teigen in canary Izmaylova, Akerman in cobalt J. Mendel, Gomez in ruby Dolce & Gabbana and Wilde in a red A.L.C. skirt.
