Jessica Lange’s Sunglasses at Emmys 2012: Love It or Leave It?

Sep 24, 2012 @ 10:38 am

It may have been a scorching 90 degrees on the red (hot!) carpet at last night’s 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, but at least one actress managed to keep her cool. American Horror Story star Jessica Lange—who took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie—arrived for the big night wearing a red column dress by J. Mendel (and she’s not the only one who chose the designer), which she accessorized with a pair of gold sunglasses. Some leading ladies chose other ways to keep cool (ahem, Sofia Vergara in 175 carats of diamonds), but we’re kind of loving Lange’s bold eyewear move. Tell us in the poll below: Do you like Jessica Lange’s sunglass statement?

Emmys 2012: What J. Mendel Thinks of Dressing All Those Ladies

What did Jena Malone, Kat Dennings, Emily VanCamp, Jennifer Westfeldt all have in common at the 2012 Emmys? Dresses by J. Mendels Gilles Mendel! “I put a lot of love and effort into those dresses,” the designer told InStyle.com just days before Emmys night during his New York Fashion Week show. “I would hope that they’re effortless and that the woman feels feminine. I love the woman’s body. They work hard at making them beautiful.” And his hope is that all of the women who chose his pieces—including Malone’s merlot satin asymmetrical look, Dennings’s sweetheart red-hot crimson column, VanCamp’s dove gray pleated style, and Westfeldt’s royal blue draped design—feel great about wearing them. “I think they feel confident in the dresses,” he said. “They understand the work that is put into them.”

Deep V Dresses Have Stars Taking the Plunge

As summer transitions into fall, there’s one silhouette celebrities keep reaching for—the ultra-deep V. “I’m always trying to push the boundaries,” Jenna Dewan-Tatum told InStyle.com of her Naeem Khan look at the designer’s fashion show during New York Fashion Week. “Everyone always tries to hold me back, like, ‘Jen, be a little bit more closed.’ This is my nice happy medium.” Zoe Saldana (in Gucci), Nicole Richie (in Maria Lucia Hohan), Lea Michele (in Emilio Pucci), and Malin Akerman (in J. Mendel) seem to agree, all wearing their own interpretations of the exposed look in the past two weeks. “The deep V is a tricky look to pull off but it really plays to proportion and lengthens the body,” celebrity stylist Taylor Jacobson, who dresses Kate Beckinsale and Ashley Benson, told InStyle.com. Her tip: “Make sure to try on before you buy, and stick to delicate jewelry pieces to keep the look classy.” (You’ll notice each of the stars above are necklace-free, hint hint.) Dewan-Tatum also suggests walking out the door with some extra confidence. “You just have to work it,” she said. “Just own it. It doesn’t matter what your shape is. Everyone can wear a version of this and feel comfortable.” Inspired yet? Go for it!

Taylor Swift’s White VMAs Suit: Customized By Gilles Mendel!

Sep 14, 2012 @ 2:53 pm

Taylor Swift stunned when she stepped out in an all-white—a serious departure from her go-to red looks—silk crepe J. Mendel suit on the red carpet at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. And now we’ve got the exclusive details! InStyle.com spoke to designer Gilles Mendel at his New York Fashion Week show, where he told us that Swift handpicked the suit from a private preview of his Spring/Summer 2013 collection. He then created a custom monochromatic version of the tailored floral two-piece (shown right) for the performer. “I was doing a suit for this collection, and she loved it,” he said. “She loved the sketches. What she wore was similar to the one [I'm showing] today, except hers was white. Mine are very colorful.” Mendel also revealed that it was the first time Taylor had ever worn a suit for the red carpet—and the first time he had ever made one. “She wanted to wear a suit. She’d never worn a suit…ever!,” he said. “Suits are new to me. [For] this collection I’m coming back to an old world glamour, and I love
that I’m getting into the suiting. It’s exciting!”
You can say that again.
