Tribeca Film Festival Fashion Moment: The Director Documentary Stars Gucci’s Frida Giannini, and It’s a Must-See for Fashion Lovers

Apr 23, 2013 @ 5:00 pm

Over 100 films are being screened during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this week, and this is the one we’d vote for if we were jurors: The Director: An Evolution in Three Acts. The documentary goes behind the normally-private world of Gucci creative director Frida Giannini’s design process to show her involvement in directing everything, from selecting final looks for runway shows to auditioning models (watch the trailer above). “For me, clothes are always first a way for people to be seductive,” Giannini reveals in the film. “I don’t think the power woman needs to be necessarily hard. You can be sweet and sensual, and feminine. I think that is the strongest part.” The film was produced by James Franco—who, coincidentally, also happens to be the face of Gucci’s men’s colognes—and was directed by by Franco’s one-time New York University classmate Christina Voros. Is your interest piqued? Scroll down to read six things that solidified our girl crush on Frida Giannini after watching the film. More

Katy Perry’s Stylist Still Loves Her Grammys Dress: “We Took That Memo with a Grain of Salt”

Mar 26, 2013 @ 11:00 am

It’s been almost two months since Katy Perry “missed” the memo and dared to bare at the Grammys in that Gucci dress, and her stylist, Johnny Wujek, is still in love with what a moment it was. “I loved Katy’s Grammy look so much. I loved how it wowed everybody. Everybody who walked by commented [on it] or was staring,” Wujek told InStyle.com, refering to the gaping keyhole that helped his pop star client reveal her ample assets. “That day was so fun. We took that memo with a grain of salt.” Still, the jade column did help her cover up, too, with its full length and long sleeves—a nod to her more demure sartorial choices as of late. “We go through phases. It’s an evolution. We’ve done the young, playful, candy, cupcake thing and now she’s growing into a woman. We’re shaking it up.” We can’t wait to see what’s up next!

Gucci continues its long history of supporting women’s rights (following a seven-year partnership with UNICEF to fund women’s education) with the launch of Chime for Change, the brand’s new global campaign to raise awareness for female empowerment founded by Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini, Beyoncé, and Salma Hayek Pinault. “I am proud to be joining the growing international movement on behalf of girls and women around the world,” said Hayek Pinault, who attended the TEDxWomen luncheon yesterday in Long Beach to officially launch the foundation, along with supporter Jada Pinkett Smith. ”I believe that by working together, we can change the course of history to ensure that girls and women are empowered to realize their potential and thrive.” The organization, which will have a T-shirt up for grabs to benefit the cause (modeled in the above right photo by Giannini), has a catch phrase that says it all: “None of us can move forward if half of us are held back.” Visit chimeforchange.org/join-in to get involved.

Anne Hathaway’s Busy (and Chic) Awards Season Red Carpet Run

Feb 26, 2013 @ 12:18 pm
Anne HathawayWireImage (2); Getty Images; Rex USA

Anne Hathaway is now an Oscar-winning actress. She wore Prada (left) when she took home the golden statue for Best Supporting Actress for her tear-jerking portrayal of Fantine in Les Miserables, and she took one very long, well-dressed road to get to that Oscars stage. At the annual nominees luncheon before the big day, she still didn’t know what she would wear. “I need to get on that, don’t I?” she told reporters. “I definitely have some ideas, some cool options, but no specific plans yet, no preparation.” Whether she was wearing (L to R) Gucci at the Costume Designers Guild Awards, Chanel Couture at the Golden Globes, or runway-fresh Giambattista Valli at the SAG Awards, Hathaway always put her best foot forward—and she only repeated designers twice. Click through the gallery to see all her looks this awards season!
