Derek Lam’s DesigNation collection for Kohl’s may not hit shelves for another month, but we’ve got a sneak peek of the upcoming line! Inspired by a trip that he took to Rio de Janeiro, the collection embodies the spirit of the South American city. “It’s really exciting, what’s happening with Rio right now. With the Olympics, it’s very modern,” Lam told InStyle.com. “It’s such a sensual city, so I thought that would help me step outside the box of what I usually use as an inspiration.” Filled with bright colors and bold patterns, the collection combines the feel of Brazil with his classic feminine aesthetic. “I really played with prints to give texture and life to a summer collection,” Lam continued. “But the denim dress (right) is one of my favorites. It’s just the perfect piece that everyone wants, and it’s in this great eco fiber!” Shop the entire limited-edition collection (priced between $36 and $88) when it arrives in stores and online at kohls.com April 5th, and click through the gallery to see our 10 favorite looks from the collection!

Derek Lam‘s Kohl’s collection will hit stores April 5—and we have an exclusive sneak peek at two of the looks from the collection! The designer signed on to Kohl’s internationally-minded series, DesigNation, last November, choosing Rio as his source of inspiration for looks like these dotted separates ($44 for the tank, $54 for the pants) and this green boatneck dress ($64). “I’m always looking to the past for inspiration, but also trying to interpret it for contemporary life,” said Lam when asked to explain his inspiration. “I think Rio is a perfect example of that.” Shop the entire limited-edition collection (priced between $36 and $88) on kohls.com from April through May.

Derek Lam is continuing the boho-chic waves and wine lipstick trends of yesteryear right through to next fall, according to the beauty look dictated at his runway show during New York Fashion Week. “The beauty look Derek Lam and I created for the Fall 2013 show is a sophisticated, minimal urban hippie, playing off of his inspirational mood board and the textures and colors of the fabrics in his collection,” lead makeup artist Tom Pecheux said. In turn, he opted for a softer version of a matte lip by using one of Estee Lauder’s yet-to-be-released gloss-stain hybrids. We can always count on Derek Lam to deliver cozy outerwear, which is why we caught up with the designer to find out his ultimate dress-for-fall tip. “Get a great peacoat,” Lam told InStyle.com at last night’s 29th Annual Night of Stars Awards in New York City, where he took home one of the night’s three Star Honoree awards. “There’s nothing like a peacoat. It’s like a trench coat. Borrowed from the guys, it’s sexy—always—on a woman.” His collection boasts a few that we’re coveting, like this luxe cream double-breasted style, available for $2,250 at barneys.com.

Following in the fashionable footsteps of designers to introduce collections at retail giant Kohl’s, Derek Lam (a favorite of Michelle Obama and a New York Fashion Week staple, whose most recent runway looks are shown right) has confirmed that he will debut a line for the store in Spring 2013. His designs take inspiration from a trip he took to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “Rio de Janeiro is a city that bridges the old with the new, where you can’t separate what is natural from what is man-made,” Lam said in a statement about the DesigNation line. “This collection with Kohl’s serves as an ally to modern women, embracing the spirit of Rio and providing beautiful, inspired clothing at an affordable price.” The collection—available in April and May of next year—will include pieces like fitted T-shirt dresses and black trouser skirts, which will retail from $38 to $98 at Kohl’s stores nationwide and kohls.com.

A piece from Derek Lam’s runway collection—loved by celebrities like Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Bilson, Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron and more—can usually run in the thousands. Luckily, if you don’t want to spend that much, the designer came up with a solution: 10 Crosby by Derek Lam, a new lower-price line that still incorporates his soft, subtle, and feminine signatures without the big price tag. “This collection is not meant to be intimidating,” Lam told InStyle.com this week. “I wanted there to be a lot of choice for separates and basics.” As for how to wear the tops, dresses, wide-leg trousers, and jackets? Any way you want! “If you’re intrigued by fashion, by clothes, you’re your own personal stylist,” he advised. Shop the lineup starting at $165 at barneys.com, and check out our favorite pieces in the gallery.
We knew the First Lady liked to show off her arms, and now we know she’ll change designer dresses to do it! Michelle Obama first wore this Derek Lam coffee-hued printed frock with three-quarter sleeves for a dinner in Indonesia last November, but when she showed up to the National Design Awards in Washington, D.C. this week, she converted it into a sleeveless look. Talk about alterations! So, which style do you like better: With sleeves or without? Cast your vote in the poll below! More
