SXSW Fashion Trend: Black and White (And It’s a Look You Can Wear, Too)

Over at the South by Southwest Film and Musical Festival in Austin, Texas, plenty of new movies and tunes are debuting, but one classic trend is holding steady: black and white fashion. Olivia Wilde (in Dolce & Gabbana), Ashley Benson, and Genesis Rodriguez, all on-hand to premiere their latest films, worked the tones in tandem, and they made each lady look cool and confident. It’s a reassuring palette—especially when organized in crisp grids or lines, like Wilde’s Dolce number. But if you try the trend yourself and want to lessen the impact, add another color, like Rose Byrne, who paired her pinstriped A-line skirt and white accessories with a peach Balenciaga button-down blouse. (Tip: You can also add color with a bright pump or bold lips.) But remember, you don’t need much makeup—just filled brows and contoured cheeks; let your sharp outfit take center stage.

Revenge is back tonight! And (spoiler alert!) someone close to Emily (Emily VanCamp) has been killed—not that such an incident will stop her from attending the funeral looking anything less than polished. Because even with all the twists and turns on the Sunday night soap, one thing is constant: Emily, Victoria (Madeleine Stowe), and all the other Hamptons ladies look good. That’s why we caught up with the woman behind their best looks, costume designer Jill Ohanneson, who shared with us her all-time favorite pieces she put on the girls, from Emily’s red-hot Alexander McQueen to Ashley’s (Ashley Madekwe) goddess Balenciaga, to Charlotte’s (Christa B. Allen) sweet Anthropologie find. “There are so many that I love! I have the best job in the world,” Ohanneson told InStyle.com. Can’t say we disagree! Click through to see them all, plus her insider scoop on what makes each look so special. And tune into ABC at 9/8c to see how Emily & Co. work their mourning LBDs for [------]‘s final farewell.

Accessories Tip: Pair Your Spring Ruffles with Pendants

Mar 3, 2013 @ 2:30 pm

We’re obsessed with the bold ruffles trend! While the look makes a statement all its own, it never hurts to accessorize—and for swirls, we suggest pairing them with pendants. These small neck-danglers are perfect because they pack enough punch without distracting from voluminous designs. Our picks, as inspired by Balenciaga‘s spring runway, are these Gorjana gold-plated necklaces—both for under $100. Stylish and wallet-friendly!

Why InStyle’s Fashion Director Loved Alexander Wang’s “Sophisticated” Balenciaga Debut

Mar 1, 2013 @ 9:00 am

InStyle’s Fashion Director Cindy Weber Cleary is at Paris Fashion Week, and she’s sharing her favorite looks as soon as they hit the runway. Yesterday, she was wowed by Alexander Wang’s Balenciaga debut. “Alexander Wang’s first collection for Balenciaga was remarkably polished,” says Weber Cleary. “This sophisticated look references the original designer’s signature rounded silhouette but also exhibits Wang’s sexy, sporty ease. No small feat!”

Runway Looks We Love: Balenciaga

Mar 1, 2013 @ 7:00 am

For his hotly-anticipated debut at Balenciaga, Alexander Wang showed a polished fall collection that stayed true to the historic fashion house’s roots. Marble was the theme of the 35-piece lineup, and the stone inspiration worked its way into the black, white, and gray clothes and accessories, as well as the actual runway itself. True to form, Wang delivered touches of his signature cool-girl spin—the cocktail dresses were designed to look refined and covered-up in the front and revealingly sexy in the back. The designer’s knack for accessories also came through, with toe-cleavage baring heels, boxy bags with silver frames, and sleek knotted silver cuffs—all minimal with a bit of a sexy edge, a signature evident in everything Alexander Wang touches. Instagram-Worthy: Alexander Wang’s Debut Collection for Balenciaga at Paris Fashion Week

Feb 28, 2013 @ 11:58 am

Let’s go to Paris, readers! InStyle‘s Fashion Director Cindy Weber Cleary is in the City of Lights for Paris Fashion Week, and she’s giving us updates straight from her front row perch. One show she loved so far: Alexander Wang‘s collection for Balenciaga, the first lineup to come from the New York designer since his appointment to the role in late November. “The DNA of Cristóbal Balenciaga, the house’s founder, was unmistakable—but so was Mr. Wang’s. Urban, chic, sexy,” Weber Cleary says of the black and white looks that hit the runway, including these super sexy stilettos. She added: “Alexander Wang did an outstanding job.” For more updates, straight from the runway, follow at @instylemagazine on Instagram.
