Alexander Wang served up sporty separates with an edge for his fall 2012 collection at New York Fashion Week. A color palette of black, peroxide white and oxblood complemented sleek techno fabrics, like lacquered wool, waxed suede, fishnet, and vinyl. Accessories included mouth-covering masks, long leather gloves, and knee-high boots. Though, Wang’s clothes weren’t the only showstoppers—supermodel Gisele Bundchen made her first public appearance since the Super Bowl to close the show in knee-length leather coat with up-to-there slits. Happy birthday, Starbucks! In celebration of 40 years of coffee, the caffeine giant has teamed up with Alexander Wang, Sophie Theallet and Billy Reid on a line of T-shirts inspired by the brand. “The first thing we thought of was what everyone tries to avoid—spilled coffee on a T-shirt,” Wang said of his design. Alexander Wang’s Spring 2012 collection embodies sporty chic to the extreme. “I was inspired by speed and fast sports like professional cycling and NASCAR racing,” the designer told us after his show. “You can incorporate these pieces into your daily wardrobe to give you an edge.” The athletic lineup included utility pockets, perforated gym bags, football jerseys worn as dresses, and even floral-printed helmets. But within the tough elements, pure sexiness emerged, like mesh bustiers paired with cargo pants and sheer cover-ups worn over vibrant swimwear. The designer’s inspiration came from women training to run marathons, and as a result, athletic influences showed up in everything from sneakers to scuba swimwear (worn as tops with trousers). Lady Gaga to Receive Fashion Icon Award!

Lady Gaga’s daring costumes and push-the-envelope outfits are getting some official recognition from the fashion industry! Last night, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that the pop star will be the recipient of its annual Fashion Icon Award during its annual Fashion Awards ceremony this summer (Iman received the honor last year). As for the other awards, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen‘s label The Row earned a nomination for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear, which honors emerging new talent. Nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year include Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Marc Jacobs, and Jacobs will also receive the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. The CFDA will also honor InStyle’s fashion director Hal Rubenstein with the prestigious Eleanor Lambert Founder’s Award, which is given to someone who has made a unique contribution to the world of fashion.
