Elizabeth Giardina is certainly a busy woman. In addition to working as the design director for 10 Crosby Derek Lam, she’s also been training to run in Sunday’s ING NYC Marathon, taking place across all five of New York City’s boroughs. Taking on the marathon is no easy task — the first wave is scheduled to start at 9:40 AM, and will run all day as participants make their way through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. We caught up with Giardina to find out about the essentials she needs to make it across the finish line, and the fitness items she’ll be taking with her to the race. Head over to our Pinterest to check out all of Elizabeth’s marathon must-haves!
Now here’s a beautiful way to celebrate a milestone: To commemorate a decade of Estee Lauder’s Tom Pecheux creating the gorgeous makeup looks at Derek Lam‘s fashion shows, the designer has partnered with the famed beauty brand to launch a five-piece cosmetic collection, which will hit stores in January. Lam’s covetable runway pieces are usually on the steeper end of the price spectrum, so it’s especially exciting that the deep blue kajal pencil, shimmery gloss, dusty rose lipstick, gold eye shadow, and inky black mascara come housed in a navy clutch bearing his trademark aesthetic. We’re wondering if Lam is considering launching an in-house beauty brand next — after all, Tom Ford collaborated with Estee Lauder back in 2005, and now has a successful makeup, fragrance, and men’s skincare line under his belt. Fingers crossed! Find the Estee Lauder Derek Lam collection at the brand’s counters and on esteelauder.com in January, priced at $85.

The midi skirt is proving to be one of fall’s most important silhouettes. Celine, Dries Van Noten, and Derek Lam were some of the notable runways to showcase the trend, and celebrities are following suit. Whether you opt for a full or pencil version of the skirt, the ideal length will ultimately depend on your height. (As a rule, it should always hit somewhere just below your knee or at mid-calf.) We love this shape because it feels tailored, sophisticated, and will easily take you from the office to a night out. It can be paired with a stacked-heel boot, feminine pump, or pointed flat. For a modern take, style with a cozy crop sweater and leather jacket. If you choose a print, pick up one of the print colors on your shoe to create a more cohesive look. The spring and summer seasons typically call to mind blooming flowers that make up a colorful palette of tropical motifs. So it makes sense that for their Spring/Summer 2014 collections, designers literally integrated hot-weather foliage into their designs. Raffia, a fibrous textile from palm trees, was a common thread among many. At Derek Lam, raffia-fringe belts and necklaces served as accessories layered over easy pajama silhouettes. At 3.1 Phillip Lim, the designer took a breather from his geode-inspired looks to line tops and bottoms with multicolored raffia. Christian Siriano, who said he was inspired by a vacation to Mexico, twisted raffia into floral French knots that decorated a pretty chiffon dress. Woven, knotted or fringed, commit this to memory: Spring 2014 is all about raffia.

What it was like: Michael Gaubert–simple classical instrumental music.
Why we love this collection: It was sleek and minimal (chambray, navy, white and black) with pops of yellow. He sent ladylike full skirt silhouettes with waist defining wide belts in check prints, complete with matching turbans. Our favorite group was the raffia fringe belts and necklaces layered over easy PJ-like and crepe pieces. Also, we were obsessed with the tall gladiator sandals!

InStyle’s Exclusive Video: Derek Lam on the “Modern, Timeless” City that Inspired His Kohl’s CollectionMar 4, 2013 @ 12:08 pm
With Derek Lam’s Rio de Janeiro-inspired collection for the Kohl’s DesigNation landing in stores next month, the designer gave InStyle an inside look what inspired him to create the line in the video above. The clip takes you on a mini-tour through the Brazilian coastal city, highlighting the percussive music that lines its streets, the decadent meals enjoyed by the locals, and (of course) the beautiful beaches and landscapes that made their way directly onto the patterns seen in the collection. “Rio’s just one of those wonderful cities that has so much color and so much life,” Lam says. “It has a jungle-meets-city atmosphere: modern and timeless at the same time.” The entire limited-edition line, priced between $36 and $88, arrives in stores and online at kohls.com April 5th.
