New Girl Costume Designer: All the Details on CeCe’s Wedding Dress

Congratulations, CeCe! Hannah Simone’s character got hitched on last night’s second season finale of New Girl, which meant costume designer Deb McGuire had to make the clothes look and feel authentic for a traditional Indian wedding. To do so, she purchased a lehenga, a traditional Indian wedding gown, in the Little India section of Los Angeles, Artesia, one of her go-to spots for two decades. “When I heard we were doing an Indian wedding for our final episode I planned a shopping day with my crew, including lunch at my favorite Indian vegetarian restaurant,” McGuire told us. “The red wedding sari that Cece wears was the first of four that we picked out. When she put it on, it took our breath away. We didn’t even attempt to consider the others!” The challenge was picking an equally beautiful sari for Jess (Zooey Deschanel) to make sure she stood out among the other guests clad in jewel-tone looks. “The blue trimmed in pink was perfection, especially because I could envision it looking smashing against the orange decor,” McGuire said. “The visual, indeed, made  me gasp with delight. Color is powerful!” To learn more about Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl fashion, visit possessionista.com.

Costume Designer Insider: Olivia Pope’s Subtle Clothing Cues on Scandal

May 9, 2013 @ 2:00 pm

The hunt for the White House mole continues and—more importantly!—Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) relationship is about to get real on this week’s all-new episode of ABC’s hit political drama Scandal. With so many heavy situations at hand, costume designer Lyn Paolo reflected the plotline by using subtle cues when dressing Washington. “We used darker tones in [Olivia’s] costume to reflect the dark undertones of her soon-to-be-made decisions,” Paolo told InStyle.com. Case in point: The outfit shown here, which includes a navy blue Christian Dior satin jacket, pale pink Ferragamo coat, tan Prada purse, and light gray Armani pants. “Olivia is torn, should Fitz give up everything for her, will it work, how can they be together without destroying his Presidency?” added Paolo. We can’t wait to watch what happens as things heat up! Tune in to Scandal tonight at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.

Costume Designer Insider: How Jess Day’s Prom Dress on New Girl Was Made

May 3, 2013 @ 9:30 am

Aw, Jess! We couldn’t help but smile when we saw Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) in this week’s prom flashback episode of New Girl  wearing a confection with a triple threat of fabrics—tulle, rosettes, and sequins. Costume designer Deb McGuire told InStyle.com this throwback was supposed to garner just that kind of reaction. “What could be more wonderful than to think of what a Jess prom dress might have been?” McGuire said. Calling her inspiration “Snow White on acid,” McGuire customized a turquoise dress by draping it with layers of tulle. Then, she topped it with flowers and birds to add “pure whimsy.” How perfectly Jess! Find out what else Deschanel wore on Possessionista.com.

Game of Thrones Is Back Tonight! And Between Her Holly Golightly and Khaleesi Costumes, Emilia Clarke Prefers…

Mother of Dragons, Game of Thrones returns tonight (9/8c on HBO)! Just one week ago, we watched Emilia Clarke make her Broadway debut in Breakfast at Tiffany’s wearing Colleen Atwood’s chic ’40s dresses—a far cry from the leather crop tops and dirtied skirts she’s worn as Thrones‘ Daenerys Targaryen. That’s why, when we caught up with the star at the play’s opening night after-party, we had to ask her: Which character’s costumes does she prefer to wear? “Colleen’s costumes help me get into character in so many ways! They’re corseted, which definitely helps. And I wear the proper [1940s] stockings with the runs. Everything about the costumes made me feel very much like Holly.” As Daenerys, she joked that her style on the fantasy series was “slightly different;” though, this season, as she travels home to take back the Iron Throne, the actress will be treated to more regal looks, like this blue hooded cloak. Final verdict: “Holly uses her costumes as a mask, but Daene uses them in a much more practical way.” Ever judicious, as a queen should be! Which of her looks do you prefer? Tell us in the comments!

Dallas Season 2, Episode 10: Emma’s Rebellious Makeover (and More!)

Mar 26, 2013 @ 6:00 pm

Last night’s episode of Dallas, “Guilt and Innocence,” marked the beginning of Emma’s (Emma Bell) transformation into a rebel, and costume designer Rachel Sage Kunin made sure her costume showcased the pivotal moment. “Emma is transitioning from a sheltered good girl into a rebellious character who has a few crosses to bear,” Sage Kunin explained to InStyle.com. “This cranberry, short-sleeve fitted sweater was an intentional choice to start showing off a more alluring side. As Emma comes into her own, clothing will reflect those changes.” We can’t wait to see what she wears next! Click for more looks from last night’s Dallas.

Revenge Fashion: Why Costume Designer Jill Ohanneson Loved Emily’s Coral Elie Saab Dress

Mar 25, 2013 @ 5:48 pm

On Revenge last night, Emily (Emily VanCamp) found another person to add to her hit list, Nolan’s (Gabriel Mann) tech nemesis, “The Falcon,” and she did it while wearing a coral Elie Saab dress that made everyone—including costume designer Jill Ohanneson—swoon. “I just loved the color on her. It was unusual for her; she tends to stick to the blues and the beiges. But the moment she put it on, we knew it was the perfect choice for her,” Ohanneson told InStyle.com. “I also really love it for when she meets Daniel (Josh Bowman) and she’s being sympathetic. The color is so warm and the square neckline is so open, it was too perfect emotionally.” Check next week for Ohanneson’s inside scoop on the upcoming episode’s masquerade looks!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway: How Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Created the New Holly Golightly

Mar 20, 2013 @ 5:49 pm
Breakfast at Tiffany's, Colleen AtwoodCourtesy Photo (4)

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is opening on Broadway tonight—and if you’re thinking Audrey Hepburn and lots of little black Givenchy dresses, think again. Performed for the first time on the stage, Breakfast the play takes more of its inspiration from Truman Capote’s tragic novella than the romantic blockbuster that followed. And yet, thanks to Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (of Chicago and Alice in Wonderland fame), this production is just as chic, with good-time girl Holly Golightly (Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke) in scarlet frocks, retro chapeaus, and, yes, one perfect LBD. Read our exclusive interview with Atwood, in which she talks about Emilia, Audrey, and styling your own little black dress like Holly, after the jump. More
