At the 40th Annual American Music Awards, fabulous fashion wasn’t the only thing that grabbed our attention! Complementing the stunning gowns and jaw-dropping jewels was pretty makeup and enviable hair. Carrie Underwood made a regal red carpet statement with gilded eyes, while Taylor Swift went for a dewy, au naturel finish. Carly Rae Jepsen played up her pretty peepers with winged liner and Christina Aguilera debuted a Cleopatra-inspired A-line bob. Click through the gallery below for our favorite beauty of the night and to get tips straight from the performers’ stylists on how to recreate the looks!
On last night’s episode of The Voice, Christina Aguilera debuted blue dip-dyed hair, continuing her colorful strand streak. “The blue was something we just loved,” hairstylist David Babaii told InStyle.com. “Overall we wanted something cool and a bit sexy, but not overworked.” To complement her new tips, makeup artist Kristofer Buckle gave Aguilera a bright turquoise eye. “My inspiration for Christina’s look was ‘Malibu Punk Barbie’—easy, fun, colorful, and cool,” Buckle told InStyle.com. “I used MAC Fluidline gel liner in Blacktrack to create a dramatic, upper winged line and Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Bellissima to get a pale coral color that goes great with a tan, the turquoise eye, and her pink jeans.” Tell us: What do you think of Aguilera’s Barbie-inspired look? Tune in tonight for The Voice Live Results Show at 8/7c on NBC, and catch Christina’s performance!

It’s a big day for both current and past teen pop star royalty! Christina Aguilera‘s new album, Lotus, featuring the thumping lead single “Your Body,” is out. And U.K. boy band One Direction released its sophomore record, Take Me Home. This is the seventh studio album for Aguilera, currently a mentor on The Voice, who rose to fame (“Genie in a Bottle,” anyone?) during the teen-ruled music era of Britney Spears, *NSYNC, and the Backstreet Boys. Meanwhile, Niall, Liam, Harry, Zayn, and Louis—who, lest we forget, got their start on the original British broadcast of The X Factor—have picked up where those other heartthrobs left off. Just this morning they gave the largest Today show concert ever. Trust us: We walked by Rockefeller Plaza on the way to work, and the female screams emanating from the crowd were the loudest we’ve heard in years. You can pick up Lotus and Take Me Home on iTunes now!

Inspired by the recent presidential election, Christina Aguilera opted for a patriotric-meets-bridal look for her team’s first live performances on The Voice last night. “I think Election Day was subliminally still in our system when we were getting ready,” her makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle, told InStyle.com exclusively. “The long liquid winged eyeliner gave the feeling of stripes, and a large particle light blue glitter on the lid gave the feeling of twinkling stars.” And the sparkle didn’t stop there. Aguilera also wore a dramatic crystal headpiece from Jennifer Behr’s bridal line anchored along her side part. “Christina pushes us to be creative, so the last thing she wanted to do was wear the headpiece the ‘normal’ way,” said her hairstylist, Mark Townsend. “The more outside the box, the happier Christina gets! Women tweeted me all last night telling me they wore the same hairpiece on their wedding day!” Tell us in the comments: Do you like Christina’s sparkly look?

Last night was the first live episode of The Voice, and judge Christina Aguilera kicked things off with some major pops of color, beauty-wise. The inspiration? A popular animated ’80s TV series! “Using a candy pink lip added some fun to the sexy ‘Rainbow Brite’ look,” her makeup artist, Kristofer Buckle, told InStyle.com exclusively. “Christina had a lot of red in her hair, so I used a navy eye shadow to give her the drama she craves. It creates violet undertones, which worked well with the pink braids close to her face.” And speaking of Aguilera’s bright strands, we asked her hairstylist, Mark Townsend, what other colors to expect from the star this season. “We added strawberry highlights last night for the first live show, but Christina is an artist and likes to have fun with her hairstyles, so I can promise we will be switching it up a lot [during] the rest of the season!” Aguilera’s team will perform live on Wednesday, so she was able to relax last night and watch the performances from Team Blake and Team Adam. The special, Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together, will be hosted by Matt Lauer, feature performances by Christina Aguilera, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, and Sting as well as appearances by Jimmy Fallon and other big names. All money raised by the telethon will go to the American Red Cross. Tune in Friday to make a difference!
