Christian Louboutin Wins Trademark Lawsuit: Red Sole Triumph!

Viva la red! The U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan has ruled that Christian Louboutin has exclusive rights to the contrasting red sole the French designer is so famous for, according to the LA Times. The debate came about after Yves Saint Laurent put out a shoe with a red bottom and ruffled Louboutin’s rose-tinged feathers. “We hold that the lacquered red outsole, as applied to a shoe with an ‘upper’ of a different color, has ‘come to identify and distinguish’ the Louboutin brand and is therefore a distinctive symbol that qualifies for trademark protection,” the court said. That means that no one but Louboutin can sell any shoe with a red sole and different-colored upper. What a win!

Just take a look at what we spotted on the Neiman Marcus website: Christian Louboutin‘s new take on his classic Lady Peep pump, which features embroidered microchip-inspired patterning, numbers, and sequins. Christian Louboutin’s “Un Bout” pump is one of the most popular shoes in Hollywood right now, with Brooklyn Decker, Jennifer Lopez, Ashley Madekwe, and Emma Stone all scooping up the crimson version of these illusion heels. We love how Lopez and Stone defied the matchy-matchy rule by pairing the heels with scarlet dresses in the same color, and also how Decker and Madekwe highlighted the splashes of red in their ensembles with Louboutin’s design. While the strawberry shade was popular for spring (and sadly no longer available), Louboutin rolled out a new black version for fall, complete with spikes and studs ($1,435 at net-a-porter.com).
