How Would the Queen Piece in Chess Dress? Probably Like This

Jun 7, 2013 @ 3:15 pm

Chess is more fashionable than ever. On Tuesday, the World Chess Hall of Fame revealed its new exhibition, “A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, Fashion & Chess,” at Christie’s in New York City, a collection of designer pieces that all represent the all-powerful queen piece in chess. The exhibit features designs by Alexander McQueenGucciMaison Martin Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier, and more that are all inspired by the queen archetype in chess. “We wanted to have a look at what kind of personality the queen has,” the exhibit’s curator Sofia Hedman told InStyle.com. “The queen is the most unpredictable piece, so we wanted to have quite unpredictable designers in the exhibition.” Mission accomplished. Check it out for yourself when the collection opens on October 19th at the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis, and learn more at worldchesshof.com. Click to get a sneak peek.

Who runs the world? Girls! Chime for Change’s The Sound of Change Live concert in London aired last night, and in addition to the showstopping performances by Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Mary J. Blige, the event also raised a cool $4.3 million in ticket sales. The proceeds will benefit 200 of Chime for Change’s projects to advance the lives of women and girls in over 70 countries, and host Gucci even allowed attendees to donate the value of their ticket to non-profit organizations of their choice. Salma Hayek, Gucci’s Frida Giannini, Zoe Saldana, and Blake Lively also attended, and were treated to a surprise duet performed by Bey and Jay-Z. Change never sounded so sweet! The Top Two Fashion Moments at Cannes, According to Celebrity Stylist Elizabeth Stewart

May 31, 2013 @ 1:15 pm

With the hundreds of gowns that graced the Cannes Film Festival red carpet this year, which ones looked best? Who better to ask than celebrity celebrity stylist Elizabeth Stewart. “There are so many [I loved]!” she told InStyle.com at the P.S. ARTS Bag Lunch in Holmby Hills, California yesterday, an event she co-hosted to raise funds for the non-profit children’s arts education organization P.S. Arts. But when forced to narrow it down, she chose Freida Pinto’s coral Gucci gown and Jessica Chastain’s beaded violet Givenchy design. While Stewart put the stars in these two looks as their stylist, that’s not the only reason they rose to the top of her list. Here’s why:

FREIDA PINTO
“It was just so her,” Stewart explained. “This incredible bright coral with this cool belt and it was just a very Frieda moment.”

JESSICA CHASTAIN
“The purple on Jessica was just so hard to pull off and she pulled it off so beautifully and it’s just this incredible, one of a kind, custom-made dress,” said Stewart. “She just looked perfect in it.”

Tribeca Film Festival Fashion Moment: The Director Documentary Stars Gucci’s Frida Giannini, and It’s a Must-See for Fashion Lovers

Apr 23, 2013 @ 5:00 pm

Over 100 films are being screened during the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this week, and this is the one we’d vote for if we were jurors: The Director: An Evolution in Three Acts. The documentary goes behind the normally-private world of Gucci creative director Frida Giannini’s design process to show her involvement in directing everything, from selecting final looks for runway shows to auditioning models (watch the trailer above). “For me, clothes are always first a way for people to be seductive,” Giannini reveals in the film. “I don’t think the power woman needs to be necessarily hard. You can be sweet and sensual, and feminine. I think that is the strongest part.” The film was produced by James Franco—who, coincidentally, also happens to be the face of Gucci’s men’s colognes—and was directed by by Franco’s one-time New York University classmate Christina Voros. Is your interest piqued? Scroll down to read six things that solidified our girl crush on Frida Giannini after watching the film. More

Katy Perry’s Stylist Still Loves Her Grammys Dress: “We Took That Memo with a Grain of Salt”

Mar 26, 2013 @ 11:00 am

It’s been almost two months since Katy Perry “missed” the memo and dared to bare at the Grammys in that Gucci dress, and her stylist, Johnny Wujek, is still in love with what a moment it was. “I loved Katy’s Grammy look so much. I loved how it wowed everybody. Everybody who walked by commented [on it] or was staring,” Wujek told InStyle.com, refering to the gaping keyhole that helped his pop star client reveal her ample assets. “That day was so fun. We took that memo with a grain of salt.” Still, the jade column did help her cover up, too, with its full length and long sleeves—a nod to her more demure sartorial choices as of late. “We go through phases. It’s an evolution. We’ve done the young, playful, candy, cupcake thing and now she’s growing into a woman. We’re shaking it up.” We can’t wait to see what’s up next!

Plus, see more of Katy’s best red-carpet looks.
