Exclusive Video: The Making of Evita’s New Broadway Costume

Apr 12, 2012 @ 3:00 pm

Evita is back on Broadway! The musical about the still-controversial former First Lady of Argentina—who Madonna once portrayed in the 1996 movie adaptationopened on the Great White Way last week. In this revival, there are two big moments the audience goes wild for: First, when Ricky Martin, who plays Che, the voice of the country’s working class, arrives on stage. And second, when Eva Peron, played by Elena Roger—the first Argentinean to assume the role on Broadway—steps out to sing the musical’s most powerful and memorable number, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” (The truth is she never left them!) In the scene, Roger stands alone at a balcony, enveloped in a breathtaking white gown covered in more than 160,000 Swarovski crystals, an interpretation of a Christian Dior design the late political figure once wore. “It’s our goal that she will light up like a star in the night,” said Barry Doss, the associate costume designer of the production. And she does! Watch an exclusive first look at the making of this show-stopping design above. To see it in action, visit evitaonbroadway.com for tickets.

Plus, this isn’t the only famous revival! See stars portray Marilyn Monroe in the gallery.

Dior Has a New Top Designer: Raf Simons

Apr 9, 2012 @ 2:00 pm

Back in February, the label Jil Sander announced its forward-thinking creative director since 2005, Raf Simons, would be stepping down. Many in the fashion industry—including us—were left to ponder where the Belgian wunderkind would land. But not anymore! The talent is taking over the top spot at Christian Dior, a position that Dior executives have been trying to fill since last March when then-designer John Galliano was dismissed for inappropriate conduct. “Mr. Christian Dior has always been for me the most inspiring couturier,” Simons said in a statement. “I am truly humbled and honored to become artistic director of the most celebrated French house in the world.” We can’t wait to see what he does for Dior! And which celebrities will wear his creations! His first collection will debut this July during Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris.

Celebrity Trend: The Contrast Belt

Easy outfit idea: Break up a monotone look with a bold belt in a different color. This month, Nicole Richie added a patterned style to her sunny Thakoon look, Mila Kunis toughened up a blush pink Dior dress with black leather, Reese Witherspoon reversed hers so the buckle showed in the back, and Kim Kardashian lightened her berry dress with a printed addition. Remember, when shopping for the accessory, stock up on a few different styles. Treat the dress underneath as just the foundation. See more celebrity belt inspiration in the gallery now.

Runway Looks We Love: Christian Dior

Mar 2, 2012 @ 5:30 pm

At Paris Fashion Week, Christian Dior‘s Bill Gaytten presented a collection of ultra-feminine ballet-inspired styles. Floaty skirts and tulle evening gowns came in a palette of powdery pinks, lavenders, and grays. Rounding out the lineup were the equally ladylike accessories—waist–defining wide belts, point-shoe-inspired platforms, embellished clutches, elbow-length gloves, and jeweled necklaces. See our favorite looks in the gallery.

Fashion month is in full swing, and to celebrate, LIFE has opened up its vaults to reveal photos from Christian Dior’s iconic “New Look” collection, originally shown in Paris in 1948. Long before runway shows attracted paparazzi and celeb-filled front rows, Dior’s pivotal 1948 lineup changed the course of fashion—ushering in a new decade of  ultra-feminine fitted jackets, nipped-in waists, prominent shoulders and full, calf-length skirts. Go back in time and see photos from the show in the gallery, and visit life.time.com for more.
