In order to have a successful party, a good host not only needs a delicious menu and tasty cocktails, but also a playlist that hits every note. If you need help curating your own playlist this holiday season, we reached out to Los Angeles DJ Michelle Pesce, who shared her favorite hits with InStyle.com. “I’m going with the attitude that just because it’s swanky doesn’t mean it has to be boring,” Pesce told us. “I love doing a mix of new and old with a true holiday song mixed here and there.” Scroll down to see some of her party picks (plus why she chose them), and be sure to follow her on Twitter @DJMichellePesce for more musical inspiration all year long!
Surprise! After weeks of rumors, Beyonce released a full “visual” album of 14 brand new songs with 17 accompanying music videos for the self-titled album, Beyonce. News broke in true Beyonce-style through her personal social media outlets—including Instagram with a teaser video captioned, “Surprise!,” her website, and Facebook where she spoke candidly about her new album. “I see music, it’s more than just I what hear,” she said. “When I’m connected to something I immediately see a visual, a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams, or my fantasies, and they are all connected to the music. And I think it’s one of the reasons why I wanted to do a visual album. I wanted people to hear the songs with the story that’s in my head, because its what makes it mine. That visual in my brain is what i wanted people to experience for the fist time.” If anyone could pull this off, it’s the Queen herself! In honor of her new music album now on iTunes and available for individual purchase on December 20th, we picked our 6 favorite facts about the album Beyonce.
1. The Jaw-Dropping Visuals
Each of the 14 new songs features an accompanying full music video, even the credits have a video! “I told my team I want to shoot a video for every song and put them all out at the same time, everyone thought I was crazy,” Beyonce laughed. “It was important that we made this a movie, that we made this an experience,” she added.
2. Blue Ivy’s Guest Appearance
Not only is there a song dedicated to Beyonce’s daughter entitled, “Blue,” but the 23-month-old is featured in the song and also makes an appearance in the video.
3. The A-List Collaborations
Beyonce features a list of A-list musical collaborators including Jay Z, Drake, Frank Ocean, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, and more.
4. Location, Location, Location
Each of the videos Beyonce filmed were shot on location amid an international backdrop of New York City, Paris, Sydney, and Rio de Janeiro.
5. The Secrecy. Oh, the Secrecy.
Beyonce, who is known to keep her personal life private, managed to keep her fifth album a secret (save for a few leaks!) and pulled off one of the the biggest musical surprises in history, breaking the traditional market strategies. “Now people only listen to a few seconds of a song on their iPods, they don’t really invest in a whole album. It’s all about the single and the hype, it’s so much that gets between the music, the artist, and the fans. I felt like, ‘I don’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out.’ I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans,” Beyonce said.
6. Celebrity’s Reactions
Just hours after Beyonce hit iTunes, celebrity fans from Katy Perry, Snoop, her sister Solange, and Abigail Breslin expressed their admiration for the pop star’s musical feat on Twitter. “I wanted everyone to see the whole the picture and to see how personal everything is to me,” Beyonce said. “I will make my best art and just put it out, and that’s why it is out today.” And there you have it!
Lately it seems as if Tom Ford is Justin Timberlake‘s own personal stylist! Ford designed 600 individual pieces for Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience World Tour, which kicked off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York this week. Aside from 8 different outfits for Timberlake himself, the designer created original looks for all the backup dancers, band members, and vocalists. This is the first time Ford has crafted an entire wardrobe for a world tour, but he and Timberlake are certainly not strangers — Ford designed the ensembles for the singer’s “Suit & Tie” video as well as his 20/20 Experience album artwork, and also dressed him for the 2013 Grammy Awards. “Justin has great personal style and knows what he wants, which makes designing for him an absolute pleasure,” Ford said in a statement. “He is a tremendous talent and has a kind of effortless cool that makes classic menswear tailoring modern.” Catch all the designs in action by picking up tickets to Justin’s 20/20 Experience World Tour here, some dates still have tickets available!
In celebration of M.I.A.’s new album Matangi — which drops today — we picked our three favorite looks from her recently released collaboration with Versus Versace. The M.I.A. x Versus Versace 19-piece collection was inspired by all of the counterfeit Versace items found in London markets. The singer put a streetwear twist on variations of Versace’s iconic designs, like the gold Medusa head and colorful Greek frieze. Featuring kaleidoscope prints, the line includes pieces for men and women, from T-Shirts and printed jeans to silk shirts, jersey dresses and military-inspired outerwear. As for M.I.A.’s music, her highly anticipated fourth album has 15 songs including the 2012 hit “Bad Girls,” and already-previewed tracks “Bring The Noize,” “Y.A.L.A.,” and “Come Walk With Me.” The record is named for Matangi, a 5,000-year-old Hindu goddess who governs speech, music, knowledge and the arts — which the singer stumbled upon when browsing the internet. Coincidentally enough, M.I.A.’s actual moniker is Mathangi (nearly identical to that of the goddess), so she felt an affinity with her ancient namesake and the album title was born. We got a sneak preview of the new tunes at SPIN & Soho House’s Satellite Nights event on Tuesday night, where M.I.A.—er, Mathangi—performed with a gaggle of backup dancers to fans including Lorde, Alexander Wang, Timo Weiland, and InStyle‘s editor Ariel Foxman. A chaotic thunderstorm of hip-hop, bhangra, punk, and pop with spitfire raps and intense wordplay, Matangi definitely delivers. Be sure to check out the album on iTunes right now, and shop the entire M.I.A. x Versus Versace capsule collection at versace.com.
Miley Cyrus is showing no signs of stopping her “movement,” and we can’t stop listening to her. The 20-year-old singer, who just released her fourth studio album Bangerz yesterday, stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and sang a cappella version of “We Can’t Stop” in Brady Bunch style with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots without twerking, midriffs, or dancing bears. It’s similar to Fallon’s classroom series, where he and his Late Night team sing covers with artists, like “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke, using low-fi instruments, but this time, they just beatboxed the tune. Click to watch the full two minute and 33 second video and we have to admit, this video performance shows off her talent — and redeems the young star.

Miley Cyrus is officially making a bang with her fourth studio album Bangerz, which hit iTunes and stores today. The 20-year-old singer isn’t a stranger to the news and since June, she has been making headlines with her latest album when the first single, “We Can’t Stop” hit the airwaves and her music video quickly became the most viewed on Vevo in just 24 hours. And who could forget her twerking performance at the VMAs followed by the release of her boundary-pushing video for the ballad “Wrecking Ball?” Long before her midriff-wearing and punk rock crop days, Cyrus was just a 13-year-old who landed the bubbly lead role in Disney’s Hannah Montana alongside her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. We’re 99% sure you’ve heard this one, but you may not know much about the musician who sings it. The details: Lorde recently snagged the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her hit song’ “Royals,” beating out Miley Cyrus‘ “Wrecking Ball” and Katy Perry‘s “Roar” and it doesn’t look like she’s slowing down anytime soon. According to Billboard, Lorde is the youngest singer to sit at the top of the Hot 100 since 1987, when 16 (and one month) year old Tiffany’s single “I Think We’re Alone Now” took over the charts. So, who is she? Three things to know:
1. She’s From New Zealand
Lorde was born Ella Yelich-O’Connor and hails from Auckland, New Zealand. She has since moved stateside and turns 17-years-old on November 16th.
2. She Signed with Universal Records at Age 12
After she signed a development deal with Universal Records, Lorde went on to release her first EP, “The Love Club” this past September featuring five original songs. Her debut studio album entitled Pure Heroine followed shortly after which includes her hits “Royals,” and “Tennis Court,” along with eight new songs.
3. “Royals” Has Already Been Covered
Back in August, 21-year-old Selena Gomez sang a cover of Lorde’s hit song “Royals” during her concert in Vancouver as part of her Stars Dance Tour.

It’s safe to say that the Britney Spears we’ve grown to know and love is back! The 31-year old singer premiered her latest music video for “Work B**ch“ on The CW last night, the first single from her eighth studio album, which is due out this December. Spears proved she can still dance whether she is in the desert or a club, wearing a bikini or a pink and blue Georges Chakra silk cut-out gown standing in a pool filled with sharks. In the Ben Mor-directed video, the singer also paid homage to Las Vegas, where she will begin her two-year residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino starting on December 27th. As the new performer on the strip, seasoned Las Vegas veteran Celine Dion gave some words of advice for Spears during an ET Canada interview reported by People. Dion advised Spears to “find a balance between the artist that she is and the mother, and to try and find an emotional balance to cope with those two and be the best of both worlds.” Looking back on Spears’ near-15-year career, we’re confident she’ll know how to…work it.
