Nicole Richie has been getting busy in the beauty world lately — in late February, the star posted an Instagram that was altered to look as if she dyed her hair purple, only to make the dramatic change in real life a few days later. We’ve seen Richie sport blunt bangs, the long bob, and a wide variety of updos, but her pastel violet hair is the most dramatic change she’s made yet, and the coordinating color of her NO Rules fragrance has us wondering: Did her new scent bring on the change? Possibly! The exotic blend of Mediterranean orange flower, purple jasmine, Turkish almond blossom, and vanilla bean is housed in a frosted lavender bottle, and was inspired by Richie’s carefree attitude to fashion — a philosophy mirrored with her outlook on hair, we’re sure. “I try not to go by any rules, especially when I’m talking about mixing prints,” she says. “I’m so inspired by the ’60s and ’70s, and their rule was that there were no rules.” Whatever sparked the idea, we definitely applaud the star’s bold move, and we’re glad to see her purple reign continue in both the hair and fragrance realms. Bye-bye, blonde hair! Yesterday in New York City, Kate Bosworth was spotted on the set of Still Alice, rocking new red strands. Bosworth made the dramatic change to get into character for the upcoming film, and the last time we’ve seen this side of the star was back in 2010, when she donned a bolder shade of red for The Warrior’s Way. While she’s dabbled in even darker colors before, the actress prefers herself in paler shades of the spectrum. “I felt more solemn as a brunette. It doesn’t make sense, but I don’t take things as seriously when I’m a blonde,” she told InStyle previously. Because her current auburn has more of a strawberry blonde effect, we think it’s perfect middle-ground between the two hues, not to mention a gorgeous complement to her skin tone. Happy 40th birthday, Eva Mendes. The gorgeous actress is an in-demand leading lady who’s co-starred with some of Hollywood’s hottest men—Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling, to name a few. And, of course, Mendes’ romance with Ryan sizzled off-screen as well: The pair have been dating for over two years and Gosling directed her in the upcoming thriller How to Catch a Monster.
Mendes is intent on using her celebrity to spotlight worthy causes, like her work with The Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit organization that provides legal representation to defendants and prisoners who have been denied fair and just treatment in the legal system—including kids who’ve been tried as adults.
The Cuban-American actress is also a coveted spokesperson: She’s the face of Vogue Eyewear, the cover girl for beauty site Violet Grey, and the spokesperson for Thierry Mugler’s Angel perfume. Mendes also designed her first capsule collection—ranging from vintage-style coats to vintage coats to costume jewelry—for New York & Company. Who knew a spontaneous decision could make the biggest statement of the night! Next to Lupita Nyong’o‘s Cinderella-esque gown, Jared Leto‘s ombre strands also ranked among the most buzzed-about style moments at the Oscars, but the look could have turned out much different from the gorgeous waves we saw on the red carpet. Leto and his hairstylist Chase Kusero, who used Vidal Sassoon products, were originally going to go for a side-parted low bun with a wet, mirror-like finish, but at the very last minute, the duo opted for a low-key look that worked with the actor’s natural texture. We loved his loose texture and the subtle graduation in color so much, we started to wonder how the style would look on us — which is why we added it to our Hollywood Makeover Tool! Are you curious to see how Leto’s ombre waves will flatter you? Simply upload your picture to our Hollywood Makeover Tool to start, and once the style is in place, share your makeover with your friends on Facebook and Twitter to see what they think. You can even upload your new look to Instagram as a MakeoverGram, and if you’re inspired to make a more permanent change, load the style on your mobile phone or iPad to bring to your hairstylist. While the glamorous gowns lining the venue were the main focus at last night’s Oscars red carpet, the elegant beauty looks complementing each ensemble certainly didn’t go unnoticed. To mirror the princess feeling of her Prada gown, first-time Oscar winner and belle of the ball Lupita Nyong’o added a diamond-studded Fred Leighton headband to her cute pixie, which she complemented with a pop-of-color lip. Charlize Theron, on the other hand, played up her eyes, opting for a Twiggy-inspired white liner and lush lashes, while Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett paired her soft retro curls with a luminous complexion. But they aren’t the only stars who won big in the beauty department — after watching the entire ceremony and taking notes on our favorites, we rounded up the prettiest makeup and most-elegant hairstyles of the night, along with tips from the pros who created each look. It may be the Academy Awards, but Kristen Bell, Olivia Wilde, and Jenna Dewan-Tatum are all giving off serious prom vibes with their low chignons and wispy tendrils. We love how each style incorporates the subtle volume and loose flyaways we rocked to formal dances of years past, with each star putting her own modern spin on the look. While Bell’s style was more of a traditional prom updo, Wilde paired her chignon with an off-center part and soft curls, while Dewan-Tatum went for a classic middle part with a slight beachy twist. “The Oscars are a great time for my clients to get glam. Jenna’s dress had so much detail and texture, that I wanted to make sure to show off the collar and the neckline,” says her hairstylist Jen Atkin. “I wanted her hair to look breeze blown, but still keep it up and off the dress.”
A solid foundation is key to perfecting an updo like this one, so Atkin prepped the star’s strands by lathering up with Clear Scalp & Hair’s Strong Lengths Shampoo and Conditioner ($5 each; drugstores nationwide), which gave Dewan-Tatum’s hair extra insurance against all the heat tools. Once the star’s hair was dry, Atkin formed a precise center part, touched up any kinks with a flat iron, then pulled the length into a low ponytail, allowing loose tendrils to fall out and frame the face. “Tease the ponytail for fullness and pin into a bun,” she adds. “You can use a brush to lightly tease at the crown for soft flyaways.” After anchoring the style with hair pins, a few spritzes of Oribe Superfine Hairspray ($32; oribe.com) locked out the unseasonably rainy elements.

Jared Leto has had quite a year thanks to his transformative role in Dallas Buyers Club, which has already earned him a Golden Globe award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. But his ombré locks have also created some buzz, you could even say his hair is on fire right now.
“It’s on fire? It’s en fuego,” Leto told InStyle during the Independent Spirit Awards (where he took home a trophy for Best Supporting Actor). As for his Oscar hairdo tonight, he gave us a hint yesterday afternoon as to how he might style it. “If it’s raining maybe I”ll wear it up. It happens right before, not a lot…goes into it.” Thankfully the rain held off because the nominated actor chose to wear his locks down versus the chic man-bun we saw at the 2014 Golden Globes. Whoever said that short hair tends to fall flat clearly hasn’t seen the versatile looks Lupita Nyong’o has been working on the red carpet! Second to her fashion-forward ensembles and daring makeup choices, we’ve also taken note of the star’s many hairstyles, which prove that switching up your part, or playing with volume can create completely different effects as evidenced by the mini-pompadour she wore to the NAACP Image Awards, and her rocker-chic ‘do at the Non-Stop premiere. Our favorite look by far has to be the dainty Fred Leighton hair accessory she wore to the 2014 Oscars, which even gained its own Twitter account only moments after we spotted it on the red carpet.
To create the elegant look, the star’s hairstylist Larry Sims worked a quarter-sized amount of the Smooth ‘N Shine Go Pro Curls Gelle Parfait ($13; smoothnshine.com for locations) into her damp strands, then diffused her hair with a dryer to bring out her natural curls. After slicking back the front and sides of her hairline with the Smooth ‘N Shine Go Pro Creme Oil ($12; smoothnshine.com for locations), Sims pushed the Fred Leighton headband into place, and shaped the hair at the crown around the accessory. A veil of the Göt2b Rise and Shine Luminous Lift Hairspray ($7; ulta.com) provided the finishing touch. “The product has an added glossy hold that will keep her hair in place throughout a night of star-studded after parties,” Sims adds.
