Just one day before the 86th annual Academy Awards, celebrities headed to the beach to honor those recognized for independent filmmaking at the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica. For the laid-back event, stars ditched their formal attire in favor of less fancy designs. Cate Blanchett went for a funky Roksanda Ilincic dress, Lupita Nyong’o showed up in an unusual choice for her — a textured jumpsuit by Stella McCartney, Shailene Woodley chose a trademark midriff baring top by Lyn Devon, and Paula Patton brightened things up in a Lorena Sarbu mini dress. For an up close look at what everyone wore, take a look through our gallery.

What Do Divergent Co-Stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James Really Think of Each Other? Find Out in Our Exclusive Interview!Feb 14, 2014 @ 5:37 am
Divergent co-stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James may be two of Hollywood’s hottest upcoming actors, but the in a sit down for the March issue of InStyle, available on newsstands and for digital download now, the duo prove to be easygoing, down-to-earth, and — much like their characters in the film, out March 21 — fearless.
In fact, Woodley was so intrepid she let on-set hairstylist Sebastien Richard cut her long locks into a sleek crop cut inspired by Linda Evangelista circa 1989. The shorter, low-maintenance style seems to suit her perfectly. “When I walk into a room with the least amount of makeup on I feel the most confident,” she says. “When I walk into a party wearing nice-looking comfortable jeans and a comfortable nice-looking shirt and comfortable shoes, and everyone else is in cocktail dresses and heels, I feel empowered because I’m fully dancing to the beat of my own drum, and that feels good.”
What else feels good? Playing the character of Tris. “She is an incredibly strong human being who isn’t bad ass by nature, like a Katniss Everdeen,” she says. James, meanwhile, describes his character Four as “a mysterious figure who is very closed and very reluctant to trust, but he falls in love with Tris and becomes very protective of her because they have these soul mate qualities.”
In reality, what do the on-screen lovebirds think of each other? Keep reading for the rest of our exclusive interview with Woodley and James, and for more, pick up the March issue of InStyle, on newsstands and available for digital download now.
Until next year Park City, Utah! InStyle just wrapped up at the Sundance Film Festival — where we were smack in the middle of Main Street — catching up with all the stars debuting their new films at our pop-up portrait studio. Shailene Woodley greeted everyone with hugs when she came by to discuss her new book-to-movie dark drama White Bird in a Blizzard, while Diane Kruger (in a Chanel skirt and Chloé top) dropped in to tell us about her role in The Better Angels, a film that focuses on the people who influenced Abraham Lincoln in the early 1800s. Elle Fanning filled us in on what marked the 15-year-old star’s third trip to Sundance, where she had two films premiering, Young Ones and Low Down. “I’m kind of a pro at this point,” she said with a smile in her Isabel Marant karate-inspired look. “But the last time I was here, I was nine. So it’s definitely different!” Flip through to see all the behind-the-scenes photos to catch up on everything you missed at the festival.

Happy Birthday, Shailene Woodley! The young star celebrates her 22nd year today, and we’re predicting it’s going to be one of her most memorable one’s to date thanks to her upcoming role as Tris Prior in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s wildly popular young adult novel, Divergent. And while this isn’t her first big role — she earned a Golden Globe nod starring opposite George Clooney in the Oscar-nominated film The Descendants – it’s her first major studio film in which she’ll play the lead. With Divergent landing in theaters in March, we have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of Woodley, and we can’t wait. So in honor of what is sure to be a breakout year for the star, we’re taking a look back at her style evolution from newcomer to red carpet regular.
Shailene Woodley recently lopped off her locks for her upcoming role in The Fault in Our Stars, then donated her strands to an amazing cause. But doesn’t she miss her long hair? Quite the contrary. “I love it,” she told InStyle.com at the Elle magazine Women in Hollywood event. She’s actually loving her new cropped ‘do so much, she’s toying with the idea of going even shorter. ”I want to cut it shorter, kind of want to shave it. I think it would be a fun experiment.” We can already guess that this burgeoning trendsetter will be able to carry off a closer crop if she decides to take the plunge!

Shailene Woodley has cut her lengthy hair for an amazing cause! For her role in the upcoming film The Fault In Our Stars, in which Woodley plays a sixteen year-old cancer patient named Hazel, the actress decided to donate her long hair to the Children With Hair Loss charity, a non-profit organization that provides human hair pieces to children with medically-related hair loss at no cost. “There was a time when growing my hair out symbolized something for me, but the power of sharing that choice, sharing the ability to have long hair with someone seems far more powerful right now,” Woodley wrote in a touching post on her Tumblr. “I know what it feels like to have wind blow through my wavy locks, and I am over-the-top grateful I get to share that gift with another.” While long hair has been the star’s trademark, we’re loving her new look — not to mention her generous sentiment. She joins Camilla Belle and Beyonce, who both went for similar bobbed hairstyles this summer. What do you think of Shailene’s new look? Tell us in the comments.

Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller joined director James Ponsoldt at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York City for a screening of their new movie, The Spectacular Now. The film is coming-of-age story based off of Tim Tharp’s bestselling novel, and tells the story of Sutter Keely (Teller), a hard-partying popular teenage boy, who falls in love with Aimee Finicky (Woodley), a nerdy girl outside of his crowd. “It’s very human. It’s very truthful and honest,” Woodley told InStyle.com at the Sundance Film Festival. “I think that this film explores what it’s like to be an adolescent today, and I don’t think it’s necessarily for teenagers. I think it’s more of a movie for adults. It explores very realistic things.” Already garnering buzz after a well-received Sundance debut — both Woodley and Teller received special jury prizes for their performances — the film is shaping up to be one of summer’s must-see movies. Click here to watch the trailer, and be sure to catch The Spectacular Now when it opens nationwide, Friday, August 2.
