Quvenzhane Wallis Switched from Puppy Purse to Kitten Purse! Here’s Why…

In the great Dogs vs. Cats debate, Quvenzhané Wallis has switched sides! The 9-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild actress carried a puppy purse to every ceremony throughout awards season, even accessorizing her custom Giorgio Armani dress for the Oscars with a man’s best friend bag (above left). But, not anymore! For last night’s MTV Movie Awards, she switched her four-legged friend preference, opting for a kitty purse to finish off her head-to-toe look from The Children’s Place instead. “It just went with my outfit better!” she told InStyle.com of why she made the change. Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Quvenzhané Wallis set records at the Oscars this year. Not only did she become the youngest Best Actress nominee ever at nine years old, she also enjoyed the first ever custom design by Armani Junior, Giorgio Armani‘s children’s collection. And Armani gave InStyle.com the exclusive peek inside her getting-ready process with the video above! “I really like my dress because it sparkles, and it’s fun,” she says in the clip, in between dance moves with mom Qulyndreia and sister Qunyquekya. Quvenzhané Wallis’s Red Carpet Staple = Puppy Purses! Here’s Why

Beasts of the Southern Wild’s pint-size Quvenzhané Wallis is getting the superstar treatment in the fashion world—just yesterday she wore a Stella McCartney dress to the Film Independent Spirit Awards, where she was nominated for Best Female Lead. And while the designer duds keep flowing in, there’s one red carpet mainstay that remains—her puppy purse. “I brought one to Utah [for the Sundance Film Festival], and that was the first one I ever brought everywhere,” the nine-year-old told InStyle.com. “Now I’ve started to collect them.” And Benh Zeitlin, the director of the film, loves the animal-friendly statement. “It makes a lot of sense because the first thing she ever told us at the auditions was a story about her dog,” he said. “I like that she’s staying true to herself.” So, does this mean we’ll see one on the Oscars red carpet? “Maybe!” she hinted. It would be an accessory to remember!

Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon Honors Quvenzhané Wallis and More!

The festivities surrounding the Academy Awards continued in Hollywood yesterday when Essence hosted its sixth annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The pre-Oscars soiree was filled with stars, including Kelly Rowland and supermodel Naomi Campbell (in Azzedine Alaïa), who were on hand to celebrate the day’s honorees, Oprah Winfrey, Gabrielle Union (in Versace and an Oroton clutch), Bond girl Naomie Harris, and the youngest nominee in Oscars history, nine-year-old Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis. During her acceptance speech for Breakthrough Performance, Wallis thanked her on-set babysitter—she was only six when she made the film.
