It’s off to the races for the Kentucky Derby this weekend, and we’re just as excited for the parade of festive hats as we are for the actual race. One of Hollywood’s most powerful publicists threw a private soiree in her home on Wednesday, and InStyle had exclusive access to the event! Ashlee Margolis co-hosted the bash with scarf label Theodora & Callum, Coach, Shoshanna Swimwear, MyLine Clothing, Beyond Yoga, and shoe designer Matt Bernson, and the party was filled with stars like sultry Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks (in Temperley, Moschino, and Theodora & Callum’s scarf), Hilary Duff (who snuggled up to Paula Patton in Shoshanna), and Anna Kendrick (working Coach’s crossbody), who was the first to arrive. “It is 80 degrees in Los Angeles, so it feels like summer, and this feels like a summer party,” Hendricks told InStyle.com of the event, which allowed stars to try on some of their favorite designs from the popular brands. “Today’s been fun. I’ve just been seeing a bunch of friends. It’s always nice to come to these parties and see the girls you’ve worked with or wanted to work with!” Hendricks proved to be the life of the party, staying for the entire evening and splitting her time between a cozy couch by the pool and mingling with all the guests. What fun!

“It looks gorgeous!” exclaimed the Dolce & Gabbana-dressed Paula Patton when she walked into the InStyle and Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 13th annual Toronto International Film Festival bash, held at the Windsor Arms Hotel. Celebrities including Abbie Cornish of Seven Psychopaths (in Emilio Pucci), Mary Elizabeth Winstead of Smashed (in Tucker), and Patton’s Disconnect co-star Jason Bateman echoed her reaction throughout the night, as the main ballroom had been transformed into an amber dahlia garden thanks to Forget Me Not Flowers’s mastermind Frank Rea. The beautiful backdrop matched the beautiful crowd of filmmakers and stars—many bedecked in gold jewelry thanks to host, The World Gold Council—as they freshened up at Sephora’s touch-up station, sipped on custom Patron tequila drinks, snacked on crispy soba noodle cakes and mini-sliders, and kept the InStyle Sweet Treats candy barista busy refilling jars of M&Ms and sour gummies. “This is an amazing moment,” Patton added. “It’s fun to come to this party because it makes me feels like I’m back in film school again, where you’re celebrating the art of filmmaking.” Click through the gallery to see more stars at the InStyle and HFPA fête!

To play a kickass secret agent named Jane alongside Tom Cruise in the new movie Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Paula Patton had to get her body into kickass shape. “I had just given birth about five months before I started training, so it was really intense,” Patton told InStyle.com. “We would do capoeira, karate, boxing, circuit training, a lot of self defense for two-and-a-half hours a day—things that made me feel like I would be able to be a secret agent.” And her newfound skills are being put to good use. “My reaction time is better,” the actress said. “I’m not a violent person, but you start to learn these things and suddenly you’re like, ‘I dare somebody to come up to me on the street!’ I want them to try!
