Get the Look: Step-by-Step Instructions for Recreating Olivia Wilde’s Burgundy Smoky Eye

Mar 12, 2013 @ 4:13 pm

Not only did Olivia Wilde‘s Gucci number from the Los Angeles premiere of The Incredible Burt Wonderstone win our Look of the Day, but her smoldering purple shadow is giving us serious makeup inspiration, which is why we chatted with her makeup artist Melanie Inglessis to get all the details. “We decided to do something a little edgy to make the look more rock and roll,” she told InStyle.com. “I saw a lot of metallic burgundy makeup on the runway, so we added that color to keep her makeup current.” Inglessis smoothed on a primer to start, then traced Wilde’s top and bottom lash lines with Revlon‘s ColorStay Eyeliner in Black ($7; ulta.com). She followed with the Smoky Shadow Stick in Torch ($9; ulta.com), using the darker hue to fill in the star’s lids. Picking up the deep burgundy from Revlon’s Eye Shadow Quad in Precocious ($8; ulta.com), she blended the color on top of the cream shadow, and into Wilde’s crease. “Keep your makeup below your lid,” Inglessis added. “Don’t take the smoky eye all the way to your brow bone or too far out—just define the natural shape of your eye.”

SXSW Fashion Trend: Black and White (And It’s a Look You Can Wear, Too)

Over at the South by Southwest Film and Musical Festival in Austin, Texas, plenty of new movies and tunes are debuting, but one classic trend is holding steady: black and white fashion. Olivia Wilde (in Dolce & Gabbana), Ashley Benson, and Genesis Rodriguez, all on-hand to premiere their latest films, worked the tones in tandem, and they made each lady look cool and confident. It’s a reassuring palette—especially when organized in crisp grids or lines, like Wilde’s Dolce number. But if you try the trend yourself and want to lessen the impact, add another color, like Rose Byrne, who paired her pinstriped A-line skirt and white accessories with a peach Balenciaga button-down blouse. (Tip: You can also add color with a bright pump or bold lips.) But remember, you don’t need much makeup—just filled brows and contoured cheeks; let your sharp outfit take center stage.

Olivia Wilde on Her Wedding Plans: “I’m Just Enjoying Being Engaged”

Mar 5, 2013 @ 10:53 am

Olivia Wilde got engaged to Saturday Night Live funnyman Jason Sudeikis in January, and so far, the wedding plans are still in the very early stages—think: non-existent. “I wish I did [have plans],” the actress told us at last night’s New York launch of Half the Sky Movement: The Game, a Facebook game that helps empower women and girls. “Right now, I’m just enjoying being engaged.” The dress, the honeymoon, and the ceremony location are all still to be determined, she said—though “a New York wedding would be ideal”—citing a very good reason for her play-by-play planning delay. “I haven’t had time to think about it,” she said. “We’ve been too busy. But we’re very lucky to be busy, so that’s the other side of it.”

Olivia Wilde Never Wants to Reapply Lipstick; Revlon’s New Colors to the Rescue!

Feb 28, 2013 @ 11:42 am

Olivia Wilde went incognito for her latest turn as Revlon’s spokesperson, and she shared this exclusive behind-the-scenes video of her new commercial to give InStyle.com readers a first look! In the clip, she shows off platinum strands (hair makeover alert!) and a rich berry lip, courtesy of the brand’s ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick. “I’m definitely not the type of girl who wants to reapply her makeup throughout the day, particularly not lipstick,” Wilde said. “We’re kind of offering up the idea of women daring to leave their lipstick at home, and instead, going out and doing what they need to do while still looking fabulous!” The new Ultimate Suede formulas come in 20 versatile shades, from Wilde’s deep wine to pale neutrals, and are infused with a hydrating mix of shea butter and aloe to keep your lips from feeling parched. What Was Olivia Wilde’s Most Memorable Red Carpet Ever?

Feb 12, 2013 @ 6:07 pm

Olivia Wilde’s Marchesa gown from the 2011 Golden Globes is on our list of unforgettable award show dresses, and it’s just as memorable for the star. “I always feel really honored to wear pieces like that because they really should be put in a museum, it was like a work of art,” Wilde told InStyle.com at the launch of Revlon’s ColorSilk Buttercream hair color. “When I walked out of my room the day after, the dress was sitting in the middle of the living room with thousands of pounds of tulle billowing out from under it, and it just looked like this incredible sculpture!” With a dress so big, she did have to make special accommodations. “I was driving home at the end of the night with all the tulle piled on my lap, and I had to create a window in the fabric so it wouldn’t block my view,” she added. “I was thinking ‘I hope I don’t get stopped,’ but I also could have been like, ‘Officer, look at this gown! Look at my Marchesa!’” Well, it is an arresting look, isn’t it?
