We hosted our first-ever #OscarsDressDebate Google Hangout and the votes have been cast! InStyle’s editor Ariel Foxman led a 30-minute chat with our Fashion News Director Eric Wilson, designer Rachel Roy, and Beth Buccini and Sarah Easley of N.Y.C. Soho boutique Kirna Zabete, hashing out their dream choices for what the night’s biggest stars should wear on the red carpet. Will their predictions prove true? We’ll have to wait until March 2nd for the final verdict, but in the meantime check out the video and see if you agree with their expert picks.
The 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards sure packed in a lot of surprises in just two hours! The 20th annual awards ceremony not only featured our favorite stars—Kerry Washington, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, and more—but awarded the Actor statuette to some of Hollywood’s biggest players—including Cate Blanchett (Best Actress), newcomer Lupita Nyong’o (Best Supporting Actress), Matthew McConaughey (Best Actor), Jared Leto (Best Supporting Actor), and the cast of American Hustle (Outstanding Performance by a Cast).
Not only was it a big night for film, but it was also a great one for television, where Julia Louis-Dreyfus took home the Best Actress in a TV Series Comedy (Veep), Michael Douglas received the Best Actor in a TV Movie award (Behind the Candelabra), while Breaking Bad ended their run with a bang as Bryan Cranston won Best Actor and the cast was awarded Best Ensemble in a TV Drama Series. To see who else took home the prestigious, not to mention heavy Actor statuette, visit people.com for the full list of winners.
Plus, see what everyone wore at the 2014 SAG Awards!
Matthew McConaughey, Sandra Bullock, and Julia Roberts have certainly been busy lately, and they’re going to be back for more action Saturday night for the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards. During the show tomorrow, they might just be walking away with the prestigious Actor statuette—handed out personally by Ben Affleck and his wife, Jennifer Garner.
Not only is this the 20th anniversary of the SAG Awards, but this year is proving to have the biggest star crowd to date and we have the list to prove it. From bold-face presenters—including Matt Damon, Robert DeNiro, Chiwetel Ejifor, Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lupita Nyong’o, Sarah Paulson, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, and more—to big name nominees (some of whom have already won a Golden Globe!)—like Cate Blanchett, Roberts, Oprah Winfrey, McConaughey, Jared Leto, and Tom Hanks. Be sure to tune in to TNT or TBS on January 18 starting at 8 p.m. (ET) / 5 p.m. (PT) for all the SAG action.
The two best dressed couples of the night had a trick up their sleeves: they coordinated their looks by wearing the same designer. These pairs certainly know a thing or two about fashion, and we couldn’t take our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber or Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves at the 2014 Golden Globes.
Naomi and Liev both donned looks by Tom Ford—she looked statuesque in a shimmery gold cut-out column dress by the designer, amping up the metallic effect with a Bulgari serpent bracelet and carrying a gold clutch, while he wore a tailored black suit. “Tom Ford had made this gown a while ago but I felt it was too racy for the last event, and this night is the right night,” Watts told InStyle. However coordinated, the couple prepped for the awards show separately. “We didn’t get ready together… we have two closets!” the actress joked.
Matthew and Camila stunned in Dolce & Gabbana ensembles—he rocked a modern suit complete with an emerald green jacket by the label to accept his Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, while she sparkled in a black, long-sleeved sequin gown. “Tonight is all about Matthew. I am very proud of him. Wearing Dolce so I could match him!” Camila said to InStyle.

A Barefoot Emma Thompson and a Hotdog-Eating Julia Louis-Dreyfus: Our 9 Favorite Moments From the Golden Globe AwardsJan 13, 2014 @ 5:55 am
What a night! The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards packed a lot of fun in just three hours, from the fashions on the red carpet to the surprising winners of the night. Here’s our 9 favorite moments from the night:
1. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
According to Fey and Poehler, their second time hosting the Golden Globes “was a beautiful mess we hoped it would be!” The two funny ladies kicked off the night with a series of jokes that had even Tom Hanks laughing. Our two favorite skits? Poehler taking the stage as Fey’s son Randy aka Mr. Globes and Julia Louis-Dreyfus eating in a hotdog.
2. Jennifer Lawrence—InStyle‘s December 2013 Cover Girl—Wins Best Supporting Actress
She did it again! Lawrence took home the first Golden Globe award of the night for her role as Christian Bale’s unpredictable wife in David O. Russell’s American Hustle. Just last year, Lawrence won a Golden Globe for best actress in Silver Linings Playbook and she is showing no signs of slowing down.
3. Breaking Bad’s Last Hurrah
It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Breaking Bad, which received the two gold statuettes for Best Drama Series and Best Actor (Bryan Cranston).
4. Amy Adams 15th Anniversary of Moving to LA
The American Hustle actress had a lot to celebrate last night! Not only did she take home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, but the night marked her 15th anniversary of her big move to Los Angeles to begin her career. Congratulations Amy!
5. The Bacons
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick shared an adorable family moment when they took to the stage to introduce their 21-year-old daughter, Sosie Bacon, as Miss Golden Globe. ”We know Miss Golden Globe,” they shouted right before Fey and Poehler interjected with their hilarious Mr. Golden Globe skit.
6. A Barefoot Emma Thompson
Leave it to Thompson to present an award barefoot! The Saving Mr. Banks star hit the stage with her Christian Louboutins in her hand (she even tossed them behind her back before she announced the winner) and we can’t say we’re shocked! When we caught up with the Golden Globe-nominated actress during the National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York City she admitted to InStyle.com, “heels get more painful as you get older. I’ve got band aids on every single toe.” Who knows, come Oscars time, going onstage barefoot might become a trend!
7. Amy Poehler Winning Her First Golden Globe
“I never won anything like this,” Poehler exclaimed while accepting her very first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series (Parks and Recreation). What made the moment priceless was she got a personal back massage from Bono, and even made out with him. Not a bad way to accept an award!
8. Leonardo DiCaprio Winning Best Actor
After nine nominations and one win, DiCaprio can finally add another Golden Globe win to his roster! The Wolf of Wall Street star earned one of the night’s biggest honors, Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and he didn’t skip a beat during his acceptance speech to thank his director, Martin Scorsese, by saying, “thank you for your mentorship.”
9. Adorable Couple Moment: Matthew McConaughey and Wife Camila Alves
Aside from being the most stylish couple on the red carpet—they were both in clad in Dolce & Gabbana—they were also the cutest. Right before McConaughey accepted his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, the two shared an adorable kiss and he even thanked her during his speech. Our hearts runneth over!
With the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards is just days away (airing live on January 12th!), Hollywood kicked off award season early with the 25th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala this past weekend, which honored a few of the Golden Globe nominees themselves in Palm Springs, California.
Among the stars, Lupita Nyong’o was awarded the Breakthrough Performance Award for her role in 12 Years a Slave (and wore a stunning belted Elie Saab sheath dress with metallic embroidery), while Sandra Bullock (in a pink-and-orange two-toned Alex Perry dress) and Matthew McConaughey were both honored with the Desert Palm Achievement Awards, along with Meryl Streep (Icon Award), Tom Hanks (Chairman’s Award), Julia Roberts (Spotlight Award), and more.
With more than 2,100 guests in attendance, actors Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Naomie Harris, and Idris Elba all came out (in their stylish attires no less) to support their films and fellow co-stars. To see more photos from the gala, look through our gallery!
Now that the The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the 71st Golden Globe Awards nominations, award season is officially underway as the actors begin their journey towards a hopeful gold statuette on January 12th. Of the many nominations, stars including—Zooey Deschanel, Kerry Washington, and Lena Dunham— have already taken to Twitter to express their gratitude, while nominees Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto (both received a nod for Best Actor and Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club) spoke out about their nominations. “I’m excited and honored that the HFPA has recognized my performance in Dallas Buyers Club. Ron Woodroof was a revolutionary for the human spirit, and I was blessed to tell his story,” McConaughy said in a statement. Leto added, “I’m blown away by this Golden Globe Award nomination and so thankful to the incredible filmmakers for inviting me to help bring a fascinating story to the screen. This has been an unforgettable experience and I’m so very grateful to you all.” Scroll down to see what the rest of the nominees and their friends had to say!
It’s no secret that we love celebs! We double-tap their Instagrams, buy advance tickets to their movies, and cite them as our personal style muses (WWEMW: What Would Eva Mendes Wear?). Our devotion to our favorite stars knows no bounds, and that’s why this holiday season, we’re making their personal causes, our personal causes.
In the December InStyle, we profile seven celebrity-helmed charities that inspire us, including Seth Rogan’s Hilarity for Charity, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for The Alzheimer’s Association. (Hear him talk about his reasons for supporting this particular cause in the video below.) There’s also Alicia Keys‘s Keep a Child Alive, an organization she co-founded to provide treatment, love, and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS, and the Just Keep Livin’ Foundation, created by Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila to encourage at-risk students to educate themselves, improve their physical health, and make positive life decisions.
So if you want to give back this season, but aren’t sure where to start, we suggest letting the stars point the way.
