Standard tennis whites? We don’t think so! With the US Open Tennis Championships in full swing, we’re taking a look back at some of the sport’s most outrageous fashion moments. (Flesh-tone shorts! Ball-covered jackets! Knee-high boots that got kicked off the court! It’s all too much!) Click through the gallery to see some of the most memorable competition looks in recent history.
The fiercest women in tennis have overtaken the borough of Queens for the US Open Tennis Championships, and we’re keeping a close eye on the looks the ladies chose for the competition! Serena Williams and Russia’s Maria Sharapova (when she’s not too busy launching her own candy line, Sugarpova) stepped onto the courts in feminine pink hues, while neon made a strong showing across the board, like on American Maria Sanchez. Click through the gallery to see more of this year’s outfits, and stay tuned to see more looks as the competition progresses, from now through September 9th.
Maria Sharapova loves fashion on and off the court! So when we caught up with the silver-medal Olympic tennis player at the launch of her Sugarpova candy collection earlier this week, we asked her to tell us all about the U.S. Open looks she’s planning for the upcoming championships (August 27th through September 9th). “The process starts so far in advance, just like everything in fashion,” she said. Like the past few years, she has two Nike-created options for the tournament: “I have a day dress that’s a light pink color, and then a darker shade going into the night.” As for her favorite look ever, shown above center, it was inspired by a classic: “It had an Audrey Hepburn headline—it was so sweet!” And we bet it’s extra memorable because she won the Grand Slam title that year, too! Maria Sharapova is ready to satisfy your sugar cravings! The tennis champ, who just scored a silver medal for Russia at the London Olympics and is prepping for the upcoming US Open, channeled her inner Willy Wonka and launched a colorful candy line named Sugarpova at Henri Bendel‘s Fifth Avenue flagship today. “I’ve always had a sweet tooth,” Sharapova (in custom David Koma) told InStyle.com. “I’ve been part of many great collaborations and fun collections, but I’ve never owned something, and I wanted to be involved 100%.” The line boasts 12 kinds of candy, from tennis ball-shaped gum balls to sour jelly lips, with cute names like Smitten and Quirky (the latter being her favorite, she told us, for its fun mix of licorice and marshmallow). Shop the sweets for $5 per bag, exclusively at Henri Bendel stores and on henribendel.com.

Synthetic material never looked so good! The US Open is underway in New York, and tennis pros have been punching up their court gear with sporty stripes, neon brights and unexpected fabrics.
