Punks Who Still Rock: Madonna and Debbie Harry at the 2013 Met Gala

May 7, 2013 @ 11:00 am

The fashion world got punk’d last night when typically-prim stars like Allison Williams, Anne Hathaway, and Ginnifer Goodwin added edge to their style in honor of the Met Gala’s 2013 theme, Punk: Chaos to Couture. But nobody got into the spirit quite like the evening’s original rebels, Madonna and Debbie Harry. Madge kicked things off  in true punk form pairing Givenchy‘s spikes, fishnet, and tartan (dog collar included!), while Harry kept things decidedly badass in draped chains, sheer panels, and black shades, naturally. New Exhibition Features Vintage Photos of Madonna: Preview It Here

Before she was Madonna, she was just another kid on the Lower East Side of New York making music. When she lived that life in the 1980s during her 20s, she was known around the neighborhood for her brave, unique style, and photographers Richard Corman and George DuBose had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to capture her in her element. Now, their photos have made the journey back to New York for a limited-time only exhibition (through May 12 at the W Times Square at 1567 Broadway), presented in collaboration with W Hotels, Vitamin Water, and online fine art gallery Rock Paper Photo. “Madonna was and remains an original force,” Corman told InStyle.com. “Her style was her own and there really had never been anyone like her. She really did walk to her own beat and these early images pay homage to a fierce and fearless spirit which pushed many many boundaries. Although New York at this time was a creative carnival, Madonna certainly was one of its main catalyst’s and maintains her relevance today.” Not in NYC? This Week’s Parties: Anderson Cooper and Madonna Attend the GLAAD Awards

Mar 18, 2013 @ 12:54 pm

The 24th Annual GLAAD Awards got a big dose of support from Madonna, who was on hand to present Anderson Cooper with The Vito Russo Award at the event in New York City on Saturday. “I’ve had so many blessings in my life, and being gay is certainly one of the greatest blessings,” Cooper said as he accepted the award, which is given to an openly gay or lesbian media professional who has made a significant impact promoting equality for the LGBT community. “It has allowed me to love and be loved and to help open my head and my heart in ways I could never predicted.” Meanwhile, Madonna’s fashion statement—a Boy Scout uniform—also served a message of support for GLAAD’s campaign to end the organization’s ban on gay scouts and leaders. Madonna’s Cone Bras Sell for Almost $80,000 at Auction

Dec 4, 2012 @ 11:18 am

Of all of Madonna’s many memorable looks, one of the most iconic is her cone bra. Originally designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, the bras became the costume staple from the singer’s 1990s Blonde Ambition tour, and they have staying power to this day: Two of them sold at a Christie’s auction in London for nearly $80,000. Gaultier’s fringed candy-striped couture corset (shown, inset) was originally expected to fetch between $16,000 and $24,000, but raked in more than double that, with an anonymous bidder shelling over $52,000 for the pieceThe Guardian reports. The same private bidder paid more than $26,000 for the two-piece black Lycra piece, shown. Private “Vogue”-off, anyone?

Famed fashion photographer Mario Testino celebrated his first-ever U.S. museum show last night at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where shoe designer Stuart Weitzman—Testino shot the footwear giant’s recent ad campaign—co-hosted (along with Swarovski) the likes of Gisele Bündchen, whose image is featured in the exhibit. “Mario’s work over the past three decades speaks for itself,” Weitzman told InStyle.com exclusively. “His photographs have the uncanny ability to transcend the page, and capture the true essence of fashion and glamour. [Testino's] advertising campaign for Stuart Weitzman has made a profound impact on the brand, and helped us to expand globally, seducing women around the world. We are incredibly honored to share in the celebration.” The two-part photo exhibition, dubbed In Your Face and British Royal Portraits, opens this Sunday (October 21) and runs through February 3 and June 16, respectively. On display are some of Testino’s most memorable shots, like Madonna‘s Ray of Light album cover, InStyle cover girl Gwyneth Paltrow dancing in a Paris hotel room, and, of course, numerous shots of our favorite royals, including Kate Middleton and Prince William. Visit mfa.org for more information on how you can see the iconic images.
