Get the Look: Kirsten Dunst’s Retro Waves

Sep 10, 2012 @ 4:42 pm

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Kirsten Dunst wore soft, wavy layers with a sparkly hair accessory, and we loved the style so much, we got the complete breakdown from her hairstylist Marcus Francis! As it turns out, the polished look had some silver screen inspiration. “Feeling inspired by Cybil Shepherd in Paper Moon, Kirsten and I thought she portrayed a sweet and sexy woman, who was also classic,” Francis told InStyle.com. He used Leonor Greyl’s Volumatrice Mousse ($44; leonorgreyl-usa.com) on the star’s damp strands, and created a deep side-part before blowing out the style. He then set sections into pin curls and misted them with L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray ($13; target.com). “Once you’ve finished setting the entire head, wait ten minutes and brush out the ringlets with a paddle brush,” added Francis. Keeping the side part clean, he then pinned a section of hair at Dunst’s temple, sweeping it across her forehead. A touch of Oribe’s Supershine Light ($49; oribe.com) sealed the ends and tamed flyaways.

Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart Discuss Their On the Road Undergarments!

On the Road’s costume designer Danny Glicker created the Beat Generation-inspired wardrobe for stars Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst meticulously—down to the very last detail, including the not-seen underwear. “I’ve never worked more closely with a costume designer,” Stewart told InStyle.com at InStyle‘s pop-up photo studio at the Windsor Arms Hotel during the Toronto International Film Festival. “He is so caring and specific about details. Even with an article of clothing like an undergarment, he’s like ‘Do you feel pretty?’ Do you like it? Do you like the bra, do you like the socks, do you like the snaps holding them up?’ He fuses you into it and allows you to sort of feel a little responsible, sort of involved.” Glicker’s process of combining found and handmade clothing from the late 1940s was one Dunst loved, too. “We had high-waisted underwear and bras with a pointed shape—you can tell because of the way your breasts look in the shirts is a more pointed silhouette,” she said, noting that it helped her transform into her retro character. “I love doing period films. Modern clothing for a film is not as exciting.” Catch a glimpse of what they mean by watching the trailer and click through the gallery for more inside scoop from TIFF.

Bachelorette Comes Out Tonight! All The Stars On Their Wardrobes

Sep 7, 2012 @ 6:41 pm

Bachelorette comes out tonight! The film stars Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, and Lizzy Caplan as three girls who are asked to be bridesmaids for a girl (Rebel Wilson) they used to ridicule in high school. InStyle.com caught up with all the ladies at the film’s L.A. premiere last week, and they had a lot to say about how their wardrobes (created by costume designer Anna Bingemann) helped them create their characters. “To see that each girl can be fashionable but also have her own quirky style, and when you saw all three of them on screen it would feel complete,” the film’s writer-director Leslye Headland told us. “The character’s costume is their armor. It’s what they protect themselves with, especially dealing with female characters that are all about their image.” Click through the gallery below to hear all four girls talk about their characters’ styles and see the film in a theater near you starting tonight!

Bring It On: The Musical: The Reviews Are In, And People Like It

Aug 2, 2012 @ 11:50 am

Kirsten Dunst’s and Gabrielle Union’s Bring It On is back—and it’s on Broadway! After an acclaimed national run, the cheerleading film-turned-stage musical, penned by the Tony-winning creators of In the Heights and Next to Normal, officially opened on the Great White Way last night, and it seems that critics and fangirls alike can’t get enough of the nostalgia check. ”Bring It On certainly gives fierce face, but it also backs up that glittering grill with just enough sinew and substance,” New York magazine wrote. And, with more rah-rah reviews, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, and USA Today are all fans, too! But the question is: Would you go see the high-flying fun? Watch the trailer for a sneak peek of what to expect. Bring It On: The Musical is scheduled for a limited run at the St. James Theater until October 7th; visit telecharge.com for tickets.

Hairstyle Idea to Try: Floral Headband Like Kirsten Dunst

May 28, 2012 @ 3:30 pm

Kirsten Dunst wore such a pretty updo at the Cannes Film Festival that we caught up with her hairstylist Marcus Francis to get details on the breezy look. “The feeling Kirsten and I were going for was flirty and undone with a bit of a whimsical effect to play off of her girly Dolce & Gabbana headband,” he said. Try out a similar style by positioning your accessory first, and after parting the back of your hair down the middle, start twisting and pinning sections upward, close to the headband. And don’t worry about perfect placement. “Subtle flyways add to this style, making it more wearable and modern,” he added. Would you try this look?
