What did Jena Malone, Kat Dennings, Emily VanCamp, Jennifer Westfeldt all have in common at the 2012 Emmys? Dresses by J. Mendels Gilles Mendel! “I put a lot of love and effort into those dresses,” the designer told InStyle.com just days before Emmys night during his New York Fashion Week show. “I would hope that they’re effortless and that the woman feels feminine. I love the woman’s body. They work hard at making them beautiful.” And his hope is that all of the women who chose his pieces—including Malone’s merlot satin asymmetrical look, Dennings’s sweetheart red-hot crimson column, VanCamp’s dove gray pleated style, and Westfeldt’s royal blue draped design—feel great about wearing them. “I think they feel confident in the dresses,” he said. “They understand the work that is put into them.”

Red lips are the hottest beauty trend at the Toronto Film Festival. “All I need is my Chanel dress, my Louboutins and some red lipstick,” said Blake Lively, who turned up the heat with a fiery color from Lipstick Queen at the premiere of The Town. Real-life friends Emma Stone and Kat Dennings both opted to wear shades from Chanel’s Rouge Coco collection for their photo shoots at the InStyle portrait studio, with Dennings continuing the crimson look on her nails. “I knew I’d be wearing a lot of black so I wanted to add some color,” said the Daydream Nation star of her glamorous manicure. “It’s OPI’s O’Hare and Nails Look Great.” The key to pulling off the bold look? “Pair it with a dewy complexion and a clean, contoured eye,” advises Markus Timothy, Sephora Pro Beauty Artist. “All of the emphasis should be on the lips.” Want to rock the look? See our tips and tricks for creating a perfect red pout.
