The countdown to Halloween has begun! Instead of digging up last year’s costume at the last minute (hey, it happens to the best of us), craft a creative and — most important — relevant getup that will not only delight other fright night revelers, but also showcase the breadth of your pop culture knowledge. We’ve gathered ideas inspired by this year’s movies, hit television shows, headline-making moments, and style icons — think Mariah Carey‘s bling sling, Olivia Pope’s white gladiator suit from Scandal, and Kate Middleton‘s memorable debut of Prince George — as a few ideas we’d love to see on the streets. Of course, we couldn’t help but sprinkle in a few fashion-focused costumes, too, singling out heavy-hitters like designer Karl Lagerfeld and photographer Bill Cunningham as muses. Congratulations are in order for Joseph Altuzarra! The designer—a favorite of red-carpet staples like Kerry Washington and Jennifer Lawrence—won the International Woolmark Prize US Award at a ceremony in New York last night. The award recognizes the best in emerging, talented designers, and his win puts him in the same class as previous winners including Karl Lagerfeld and Saint Laurent (who won the award at age 18). “It’s a huge honor and beyond winning, it’s an amazing initiation,” Altuzarra told InStyle.com at the event. The competition featured ten emerging designers who all submitted a look using Merino wool. Altuzarra wowed the judges—of whom included Alexander Wang and Council of Fashion Designers of America president Steven Kolb—with his skillful creation that utilized needle-punched wool textures and even a pair of wool heels. “I designed it to make it look like the textures were all dissolving into each other,” he said of his inspiration. And it’s quite the prize he took home—$100,000 to support his line and a spot representing the US with a fleshed-out capsule collection using Merino wool in the international competition, which takes place next February. “I was really stunned!” he said of winning. “It was such an honor to be a part of this. I’m very, very honored and I feel very humbled.”

Some of fashion’s biggest names are looking a little blue thanks to AleXsandro Palombo, the Italian artist re-imagined some of the industry’s biggest faces as Smurfs. While we’re much more accustomed to seeing Karl Lagerfled, Donatella Versace, Marc Jacobs and more at fabulous parties and fashion shows, they look right at home in a Smurf village filled with fashion twists (like a Louis Vuitton mushroom-capped roof). And these fun illustrations have even caught the eye of Victoria Beckham, who Tweeted, “Madame Coco Chanel Smurf! How chic!!” after seeing the famed designer as a Smurf.
