Jayma Mays’ Raven + Lily Necklace: “Getting the Word Out” for Women’s History Month

Mar 11, 2013 @ 2:07 pm

Last week, Glee‘s Jayma Mays announced her partnership with apparel and accessories brand Raven + Lily to support female fashion designers from around the world in need of help in honor of  Women’s History Month. And she continued to spread the word this weekend at the Milk + Bookies 4th Annual Story Time Celebration when she wore the spring collection’s Elsabet necklace, a piece created by an HIV-positive Ethiopian woman designing to stop the poverty cycle in her country. “The beads are actually made from bullets that are melted down—bullets found in the area [where the designer lives],” Mays told InStyle.com. “The organization helps women all over the world.” Shop the exact necklace Mays wore for $79 at ravenandlily.com, and learn more about Jayma’s partnership in this video message.

International Women’s Day: Glee’s Jayma Mays Partners with Empowering Apparel Company, Raven + Lily

Mar 8, 2013 @ 11:15 am

As guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury on Glee, Jayma Mays is always looking for new ways to help her students—and as it turns out, she’s just as kind off-screen, too. In honor of International Women’s Day today, the actress announced this morning that she’s partnering with Raven + Lily, a company founded by Kirsten Dickerson and Sophia Lin that helps women in impoverished countries create beautiful clothing and accessories while getting paid the fair wages they deserve. “Women make up half of the world’s population, but 70% of the world’s poor,” Mays quotes in the video, promising to help change this statistic. “Each collection features handmade designs that reflect that beauty and the culture of the women who made them,” she added. In turn, Raven + Lily‘s spring collection includes handcrafted leather journals, jewelry created from recycled metals, and hand-loomed cotton scarves, and it’s available to shop at ravenandlily.com. Thanks to Jayma for spreading the word!

Look We Love: Jayma Mays in $35 Neon Shoes

Apr 18, 2012 @ 2:10 pm

Jayma Mays mixed high and low at the world premiere of Paul McCartney’s “My Valentine” music video, pairing her Stella McCartney LBD with H&M highlighter heels. “Aren’t they great?” Glee’s Miss Pillsbury said of her bright footwear. “Tonight I wanted to do something neon, but instead of doing the shoes with a neon necklace and a neon bracelet, I did one thing to keep it cool,” she said. “For me, it’s better to barely do the trend—rather than wear the trend from head to toe.” The strappy shoes just landed in H&M stores—scoop them up for $35 a pair.

Glee Wedding: Vera Wang to Design Emma Pillsbury’s Wedding Dress?

Feb 14, 2012 @ 6:00 pm

Will Shuester (Matthew Morrison) popped the question to Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) on Glee earlier this month, and we caught up with Paul Breuninger, the show’s prop master, to give us the inside scoop on Emma’s wedding dress. “Ryan Murphy (Glee creator) met with Vera Wang, looking at a pink frilly dress for a future episode,” Breuninger hinted. “If it’s chosen, it’ll appear in the next couple of weeks.” The prop master then added: “Yes, I think Vera Wang would be the place for Emma’s dress.” We can’t wait to see it!

SAG Awards 2012 Beauty Trend: Pretty Ponytails!

Jan 30, 2012 @ 11:50 am

Who says ponytails have to be plain? Shailene Woodley, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and Diane Lane walked the 2012 SAG Awards red carpet last night in elegant, pretty pulled-back styles. Woodley and Lane opted for effortless low looks, while Mays and Vergara wore retro-inspired ‘dos with added volume at the crown. Ponytails are a carefree alternative to the traditional updo. To get the look, start with hair that has been blow-dried smooth, and fasten with an elastic. If you’re worried your hair will fall flat, give strands a blast of dry shampoo or volumizing spray at the root to create extra lift.

Glee Makeup Secrets, Straight From the Set!

We caught up with the head of Glee‘s makeup department, Eryn Krueger Mekash to get the inside scoop on just why the cast looks so effortlessly good. “I was asked to do the pilot in the fall of 2008 and it has really become a makeup artist’s ideal show,” she told us. Special episodes, of course, have been a highlight. The “Thriller” episode that aired after the Super Bowl featured 25 zombies in full prosthetics—which called for a staff of 19 makeup artists. But Krueger Mekash has also spent hours perfecting the character’s flawless, everyday looks—and it shows. (The makeup department has been nominated for two Emmys!) Click through our gallery to see the key products that make Rachel, Quinn and Mercedes glow. And tune in to FOX tonight at 8/7c for a brand new episode!
