Is 2013 the year of the crop top? It is shaping up to be. The trend—previously popular among red carpet fixtures and teen pop princesses of the ’90s (like Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears)—is coming back again thanks to gutsy style players like Miley Cyrus and Diane Kruger. We’re seeing a range of ab flashes, from mild (like a shortened top with a high-waisted skirt) to wild (like full-out belly-baring crops with printed pants). And you can get on the spectrum, too, if you so choose. Feel your way around the trend by starting with a cropped top and high-waist bottoms to reveal a sliver of upper abdomen—not too much, but just enough. Before Gwen Stefani and Madonna, there was Debbie Harry, otherwise known as the Queen of Punk Rock who rode the New Wave of the ’70s and ’80s. At 68 years old today, the Blondie singer-songwriter has still got it, with global tour dates booked from now til October. To commemorate her birthday, we pulled together three looks inspired by Harry’s sartorial choices of years past. From her platinum blonde crop, to the edgy prints and band tees she’d wear on stage, you can channel her punky style choices in one way or another. Ready to rock? Ever the rock star, Gwen Stefani opted for an edgy twist on the classic jean jacket when she wore this two-toned topper by Paige Denim to a park in Los Angeles. The “Lenny” style is one of our new favorites: The dark, glossy finish on the sleeves comes from a smooth wax coating that provides a cool contrast to the traditional indigo hue. And it can be yours! InStyle teamed up with Paige Denim to give away the $229 piece to FIVE lucky readers. Flashes of flesh are popping up all over the red carpet in the form of cut-out dresses. Stars love this look for its mix of sophistication and sexiness, and we saw plenty of skin-showing styles at the 2013 Met Gala last night. Gwen Stefani showed off her abs in Maison Martin Margiela, Solange Knowles added a pop of stomach in Kenzo, Olivia Wilde bared her belly in Calvin Klein, and Emma Watson favored asymmetry in Prabal Gurung. And that’s not all. Click to see more stars in cut-out dresses—because what’s fiercer than showing a little skin?
After watching a screening of The Great Gatsby in 3-D, Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry made their way to the Top of the Standard in Lower Manhattan to party Gatsby-style with the cast, including stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and director Baz Luhrmann. “I hope [the audience] takes away the desire to have some rocking out great parties, wear groovy frocks, play the soundtrack, and have a few glasses of champagne!” director Baz Lurhmann told InStyle.com at the screening, hosted by Quintessentially Lifestyle at the Modern Museum of Art.
