Grammys: Getting Ready With Estelle!

Feb 13, 2013 @ 2:36 pm

What’s it like to prep for the Grammys? Fun, fun, fun! That’s why we asked Best R&B Performance nominee Estelle to give us the inside scoop on her getting-ready process. “I wanted to do something that reflected how I am feeling right now, and something different,” she told InStyle.com. “I needed looks that were easy to wear, and shoes that I could walk in, as things got hectic. I always look for things that are easy and breezy for the day and defined for night.” The singer chose three different outfits for three different moments: red carpet, after-party, and after-party performance. Get the full breakdown—straight from Estelle herself!—in the gallery.

Estelle: “I Might Tailor My Own Grammys Dress”

Jan 15, 2013 @ 3:22 pm

British crooner Estelle is no stranger to the Grammys! The star was nominated (and won!) in 2009 for her song with Kanye West, “American Boy,” which took home the gilded gramophone as Best Rap/Sung Collaboration of the Year. (That year, she had two outfits, both revealing that the singer was in a very metallic mood.) She’s nominated again this year—this time, for Best R&B Performance for her song “Thank You—and it turns out she already has big plans for her dress. “I’m really thinking of tailoring something,” Estelle told InStyle.com at Russell Simmons’s Diamond Empowerment Fund GOOD Awards in New York. “I’m just thinking I want to do something different, something that will honor my heritage more than just wearing any designer. So we’ll see.” Estelle also revealed that tailoring her own clothes is something she does often. So where does she get her inspiration? “I dream up things!,” she said. Tune in to CBS Sunday, February 10 at 8/7 c to see what she concocted!

Estelle’s Favorite American Boy? Elijah Wood!

Jan 11, 2013 @ 2:00 pm

Grammy-winning British songstress Estelle earned fame and accolades back in 2008 with her catchy hit song, “American Boy,” which featured a verse from Kanye West. So when we saw her last night at Russell Simmons’s Diamond Empowerment Fund GOOD Awards in New York, we had to know: Who’s her favorite American boy now? “Oh, that’s so hard to choose! There’s a few of them,” the singer (in a Manish Arora dress) told InStyle.com. “You know what, I was watching Lord of the Rings the other day, and I always like Elijah Wood’s eyes. It’s a whole thing. So Elijah Wood would be number one.” Any runners-up? “Ryan Gosling would be two,” she said (no worries that he’s Canadian). “He’s amazing. And then Jaime Foxx. The older he gets the better he gets!” That’s quite the eclectic mix!

Now this is a song to wake up to! Estelle just released the music video for her latest single, “Wonderful Life,” and it’s catchy like her smash hit “American Boy” but with an inspirational yes-you-can message. (Sample lyrics shout-out: “Hey! I’m winning today, my smile is OK at the end of the line, and I’m fine, no thorns in my side, somebody remind me, it’s a wonderful life.”) The video features a montage of clips from her tour, with studio shots spliced in, creating a visual representation of gratitude for her current success. “No matter how hard you think life is right now it’ll always be better tomorrow,” Estelle told InStyle.com of how she wants viewers to feel after watching it. (Plus, keep an eye out for her oversize earrings, they’re her own from Topshop!) So, eyes up top—watch the video, and have a great day!

Ciara, Michelle Williams, BET AwardsGetty Images (3)

Before last night’s BET Awards in Los Angeles, the network’s CEO Debra Lee teamed up with Cedric the Entertainer to host the sixth annual “PRE” exclusive dinner on Saturday night. “Debra Lee throws a great party,” said Michelle Williams (in BCBG Max Azria), who hung out with R&B singer Kenny Lattimore at the event. Selita Ebanks (in Olcay Gulsen) stayed close to singer Estelle, while Ciara stopped by in a Willow dress and Louboutin shoes, which didn’t last long. “I will kick my shoes off in a heartbeat!” she told us—poor Loubs!—before hitting the dance floor with fellow guests Tatyana Ali, La La Vasquez-Anthony, and Eddie Murphy. See more photos from this weekend’s hottest events in the gallery.
