People Like Us in Theaters: Elizabeth Banks and Chris Pines on Their Costumes

Jun 29, 2012 @ 5:30 pm

People Like Us hits theaters tonight! Starring Chris Pine as a down-on-his-luck businessman and Elizabeth Banks as the sister he just found out he has, the feel-good film not only boasts touching performances but costumes by Mary Zophres that clue you in to the characters from the start. “[My character, Frankie] wears a lot of body armor, if you will,” Banks told InStyle.com at the film’s New York screening. “She’s a very impenetrable person—she’s tough.” That meant a lot of black, leather, and boots for the actress, not to mention an extra dose of eyeliner. As for Pine, who reunited with Zophres after working with the designer on Smokin’ Aces, “I wanted to make sure that you got the sense that my character wasn’t all that well put-together and that he didn’t have all that many clothes, because he was broke and in debt. I wanted him to have that secondhand look.” Transformations complete!

Elizabeth Banks on Wearing Low-Back Dresses: ‘It’s All Balance’

Jun 26, 2012 @ 11:40 am

Elizabeth Banks knows how to work beautiful dresses with low-cut backs on the red carpet, as seen when she wore a deeply dipped Bill Blass lemon gown for The Hunger Games London premiere and an Elie Saab cocktail number for last night’s New York People Like Us screening. “I haven’t worn something like this in a while,” the actress told InStyle.com at the Cinema Society and Grey Goose-hosted event. So what’s the trick to pulling off this type of look? She’ll tell you it’s more than just confidence. “It’s all in the balance,” she noted. “You can’t wear a deep-V and a high slit. You want to have balance. Like this has a low back but it also has a high back,” she said of the elaborately embroidered design, which she accessorized with Cartier jewelry. “It’s all about the ying and yang of the outfit.” Now that’s fashion zen! Tell us: Have you ever tried the low-back look?

Summer Look We Love: Feminine Florals

Pretty floral dresses are in full bloom on the red carpet, as seen on Keira Knightley (in embroidered Valentino), Elizabeth Banks (in Peter Pilotto), Emma Stoneand Katharine McPhee (both in Dolce & Gabbana). The key to this style is to play up the power of the petals—skip the overpowering shoes and bulky accessories in favor of bare arms and neutral heels. There’s no better way to strut through summer. Or to your next garden party.
