“It’s all about the ladies being bold,” Mad Men‘s costume designer Janie Bryant told InStyle.com of her approach to the latest episode, which aired Sunday, April 14. And she delivered: Peggy exuded authority in her deep purple three-piece design, while Sylvia radiated elegance in a vintage blue dress. Meanwhile, Megan returned to her cable-knit sweater to deliver bad news her new pal. “Megan wore this cable-knit a lot last year, and she wore it when she was depressed,” Bryant explained. “Because this scene was so sad, and Megan was sad in the scene, I wanted to repeat the sweater.” She added a modern twist, just to change with the times. “She’s grown from struggling actress to now being in a soap opera, so I added a collared blouse and wool plaid pants, which is very modern for the period.” Click the photo to get more behind-the-scenes detail, straight from Bryant!

Mad Men made its much-awaited return to AMC last night with season six’s two-hour premiere, and today, we turned to the show’s costume designer Janie Bryant (shown inset) to get all the details on how she represented the storyline through the wardrobe. “It’s always the most important to stay true to the integrity of the characters,” Bryant said of her sixth season. “I keep in mind that some change with the times, like Megan with her floppy hat and Joan with her purple suit, and also, not everybody changes, like Don.” Click through the gallery to get more insider scoop and learn how she took the cast of characters from the shores of Hawaii to the streets of New York City.

One of Hollywood’s most powerful publicists threw a private soiree in her home on Wednesday, and InStyle had exclusive access to the event! Ashlee Margolis co-hosted the bash with scarf label Theodora & Callum, Coach, Shoshanna Swimwear, MyLine Clothing, Beyond Yoga, and shoe designer Matt Bernson, and the party was filled with stars like sultry Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks (in Temperley, Moschino, and Theodora & Callum’s scarf), Hilary Duff (who snuggled up to Paula Patton in Shoshanna), and Anna Kendrick (working Coach’s crossbody), who was the first to arrive. “It is 80 degrees in Los Angeles, so it feels like summer, and this feels like a summer party,” Hendricks told InStyle.com of the event, which allowed stars to try on some of their favorite designs from the popular brands. “Today’s been fun. I’ve just been seeing a bunch of friends. It’s always nice to come to these parties and see the girls you’ve worked with or wanted to work with!” Hendricks proved to be the life of the party, staying for the entire evening and splitting her time between a cozy couch by the pool and mingling with all the guests. What fun!
