Princess Fashion Trend: Kate and Charlene Both Wear Oxblood Red

Oct 8, 2012 @ 5:32 pm

Oxblood red was one of the hottest colors on fall runways, and now it’s showing up everywhere—including on our favorite princesses. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge chose a burgundy Paule Ka suit to meet scholarship recipients in London today, while Princess Charlene of Monaco wore an Akris sheath to the label’s fashion show in Paris last week. What’s the appeal? This rich, intense color is as sexy as red yet as versatile and chic as basic black. “This sumptuous shade is flirtatious and even slightly provocative,” color expert Kate Smith of sensationalcolor.com said. “The woman who wears it has an allure that is hard to ignore.” Looking at these royals, we’re inclined to agree!

Aug 6, 2012 @ 10:10 am

The Red Cross Gala Ball, one of the biggest, most expensive events held annually, happened in Monaco this weekend, and we’re always curious to see what kind of fancy look Princess Charlene of Monaco brings out for this kind of mega black-tie occasion. This year, she picked a two-tone gown with a gold sequined backless bodice and white flowing skirt. While the colors were less eye-popping than the magenta gown by Akris she wore last year—she does tend to favor neutrals overall—it was no less glamorous. Tell us: Would you wear this dress if you were a princess?

Couturier to the likes of Angelina Jolie and Princess Charlene of Monaco, Akris, based in Switzerland’s fabled “Embroidery City,” is celebrating its 90th year in business with a new commemorative book, curated by FIT’s museum director, Valerie Steele, with an assist from the brand’s designer, Albert Kriemler. “For us, this book is extremely special. If you think of the last 90 years, it’s much more an expression in five chapters of what Akris is today,” Kriemler told us at the Bergdorf Goodman launch of Akris, the book. “The final editing was the most exciting thing. It was like a recipe—doing a meal where you prepare everything for it, but then, when the mise en place is done, it’s really the most exciting moment.” And the finished product is beautiful! Complete with pictures of celebrity fans and decades-old pieces from the brand’s inception, Steele’s book truly gives a well-rounded history of the honored brand. Princess Charlene of Monaco loves Akris! The royal has turned to the 90-year-old family-owned Swiss label for some of her most memorable fashion moments, from her 2012 Oscars gown to her race car-print Grand Prix shift. “When I design a collection I always think of her,” Akris designer Albert Kriemler told InStyle.com at the New York City launch of Akris, a book celebrating the brand’s heritage (Assouline, August 2012), held at Bergdorf Goodman. “It’s wonderful. When I design clothes I truly develop something that is appropriate for her and appropriate for the occasion she needs something for.” And he loves the relationship the pair have cultivated. “It’s the first time that I have so precisely worked for a woman I got to know over the last year, and that makes it very special.” We think so, too! Click through the gallery for Kriemler’s thoughts on more of the royal’s most memorable Akris moments.
