It’s not all about the ingenues tonight! Although all eyes are on starlets like Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway for their gorgeous hair and makeup choices, seasoned red carpet vets are bringing just as much glamour to the 2013 Oscars. Between their perfectly-styled strands and glowing complexions, the winning looks worn by Helen Hunt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Aniston, and Naomi Watts are among our favorites. Each star opted out of dramatic lipsticks, eye shadows, and updos to allow their ensembles to take center stage. “I was inspired to keep Halle’s look very tonal and casual with this dress, because it’s a very striking and bold look,” said Berry’s makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua. “She was presenting the James Bond tribute, and the dress is very Bond Girls—it’s kind of like wearing a Cadillac!” According to the red carpet pros, less is more! We want to know: Whose look was your favorite? Tell us in the comments!

You’ll See a Different Side of Rooney Mara in Side Effects

In Side Effects, in theaters today, Rooney Mara plays a woman with severe depression who finds herself living in a nightmare when her medication leads to some unwanted effects. It’s not exactly a role that lends itself to elaborate costuming, but the actress took great consideration in how she wanted her character represented. “Costuming is so important to shaping the character,” Mara told InStyle.com at the New York premiere. “Me and Susan [Lyall], the costume designer, talked a lot about how we wanted her to be in comfortable, loose clothes because when I’m feeling sad or lazy, it’s hard for me to get dressed.” Screenwriter Scott Burns echoed her sentiment: “When people are depressed, they’re not as much about their sexuality as when they’re not,” Burns told us. And that was achieved through costuming, with the use of muted colors and baggier pieces. “It’s not like she’s wearing leather in Dragon Tattoo,” he added with a smile. Side Effects: Rooney Mara and Catherine Zeta-Jones on Their Psych-Inspired Wardrobes

Feb 1, 2013 @ 11:28 am

Catherine-Zeta Jones and Rooney Mara looked ultra-glamorous wearing Michael Kors and Alexander McQueen, respectively, at last night’s New York premiere of their thriller Side Effects, hosted by The Cinema Society and Michael Kors. But for their roles in the movie—in which Mara plays a severely depressed woman with a secret and Zeta-Jones her former psychiatrist—their wardrobe took a more disturbed turn. “When I’m feeling sad or lazy, it’s hard for me to get dressed. You just want to be comfortable,” Mara told InStyle.com on the red carpet. “Me and [costume designer] Susan Lyell talked a lot about wanting [my character Emily] to be in comfortable, loose clothes. That was really important.” Zeta-Jones had a different approach. “It was a fine line, because I play a psychiatrist and am a woman,” Zeta-Jones said. “Obviously there’s a danger and a sexiness to my character. So we didn’t want to push it too much. I wanted to have some sexiness to her, but keep it in the realm of a doctor.” Wardrobe really does inform a character! The edge-of-your-seat film opens nationwide February 8.

Catherine Zeta-Jones Is InStyle’s December Cover Girl!

Nov 13, 2012 @ 8:00 am

Catherine Zeta-Jones is InStyle’s December cover girl! In the issue, the 43-year-old actress proves—after years facing life’s toughest battles, like husband Michael Douglas’s throat cancer and her own admission of bipolar disorder—that she’s back, and stronger than ever. “I’m not the kind of person who likes to shout out my personal issues from the rooftops,” she tells InStyle. “But with my bipolar becoming public, I hope fellow sufferers will know it’s completely controllable. I hope I can help remove any stigma attached to it.” Ever an icon of strength, Zeta-Jones triumphed through it all—and now she’s having some fun. “I’m building a closet in my house now, and it’s like a dream,” she says of her obsession with fashion. “Racks on each side, a whole boudoir. I sit in there and watch CNN. Michael says one day I’m going to go in and never come out!” And her stock may surprise you. “I love clothes, and yes, we go out, but it’s not like I’m walking around all day in a neglige with fluffy mules,” she says. “We’re country people, really. I garden and knit. I golf. We ride horses. It’s true, I don’t like the whole cutoff-shorts-and-T-shirt look, but I think you can look fantastic in casual clothes.” Next up, you’ll see her in Playing for Keeps (out December 7th) and Broken City (out January 18th). For more of our exclusive interview, flip to page 431 of the December issue—or download it on your iPad, Nook, or Droid tablet—on newsstands Friday, November 16th.

Catherine Zeta-Jones Meets Prince Charles in Michael Kors

Feb 24, 2011 @ 9:44 am

Catherine Zeta-Jones is now a Commander of the British Empire! The Welsh actress received the honorable award today, given to her by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in London for her services to the film industry and to charity. She dressed in a taupe double face jacket and shift dress by Michael Kors for the occasion, one of her favorite designers (she attended Kors’ 30th anniversary fashion show in New York last week). Husband Michael Douglas was by her side for the honor, as were their two children, Dylan and Carys. “I am absolutely thrilled with this honor,” she told the Telegraph after the Queen announced her award last summer. “As a British subject, I feel incredibly proud, at the same time it is overwhelming and humbling.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Monique Lhuillier Dress: The Exclusive Sketch!

Jan 17, 2011 @ 3:22 pm

Catherine Zeta-Jones walked the carpet at the Golden Globes last night in a strapless emerald textured organza gown by Monique Lhuillier, which featured a side drape and hand-tufted skirt. “I’m just happy to be able to put on a pretty dress,” she told us on the red carpet. “It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to do that.” Lhuillier first premiered this dress during her pre-fall 2011 presentation last month, and the designer shared an exclusive sketch of the look with InStyle (left)! The actress finished the look with Ferragamo sandals and jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels. See the dress, from sketch to runway to red carpet, in the gallery.
