Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Broadway: How Costume Designer Colleen Atwood Created the New Holly Golightly

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is opening on Broadway tonight—and if you’re thinking Audrey Hepburn and lots of little black Givenchy dresses, think again. Performed for the first time on the stage, Breakfast the play takes more of its inspiration from Truman Capote’s tragic novella than the romantic blockbuster that followed. And yet, thanks to Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (of Chicago and Alice in Wonderland fame), this production is just as chic, with good-time girl Holly Golightly (Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke) in scarlet frocks, retro chapeaus, and, yes, one perfect LBD. Read our exclusive interview with Atwood, in which she talks about Emilia, Audrey, and styling your own little black dress like Holly, after the jump. More

InStyle Facebook Poll: Which Actress Played the Icon Best?

With Lindsay Lohan’s debut as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz & Dick last night, the TV movie about Taylor’s love affair with actor Richard Burton, it got us thinking about other actresses who played icons on screen. Jennifer Love Hewitt played Audrey Hepburn in the TV movie The Audrey Hepburn Story in 2000, while Michelle Williams channeled her inner Norma Jeane in My Week With Marilyn last year. Soon, Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman will be adding regal titles to their resumes with Watts filming her role as Princess Diana in Caught in Flight and Kidman playing Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco. So, with all of these actress-to-icon portrayals, we want to know—whose reenactment is most on-point? Cast your vote on InStyle’s Facebook page now!

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Heads to Broadway: Emilia Clarke to Star as Holly Golightly

Oct 11, 2012 @ 10:21 am

Game of Thrones’s Emilia Clarke is headed to Broadway! The actress has been tapped to star as Holly Golightly in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a role unforgettably portrayed by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film. Playwright Richard Greenberg adapted the story for the stage, and said in a press release that he aims to “return to the original setting of the novella, which is the New York of the Second World War, as well as to resume its tone—still stylish and romantic, yes, but rougher-edged and more candid than people generally remember.” We look forward to seeing Daenerys don the iconic Tiffany’s tiara and necklace when the production opens on Broadway in February 2013.

Glee’s Deleted Bridesmaids Scene: See Rachel’s Audrey Hepburn Dress

Aug 3, 2012 @ 12:00 pm

Ryan Murphy’s been Tweeting up a behind-the-scenes storm! First, the Glee creator shared this picture of Lea Michele and Kate Hudson on the set of his hit show’s fourth season. Then, he Tweeted this deleted scene between Chris Colfer’s Kurt and Darren Criss’s Blaine (or “Klaine” to Gleeks) from season three’s Christmas special. And now, thanks to all the requests he’s received for it, @MrRPMurphy uploaded the missing Bridesmaids-inspired scene promised from Rachel’s (Michele) and Finn’s (Cory Monteith) would-have-been wedding. All the McKinley ladies are here, and we get a chance to see Rachel’s adorable tea-length white dress, created by the show’s costume designers and L’ezu‘s Patricia Nevil, up close. “We used Audrey Hepburn’s wedding dress in Funny Face as inspiration for Rachel Berry’s dress,” costume assistant Mojdeh Daftary told InStyle.com. Here’s our comparison—they were so spot-on! Watch the scene above.
