Look We Love: Peekaboo Braids

Jun 26, 2012 @ 1:05 pm

Subtle braids like January Jones‘s, Kristin Cavallari‘s, and Ahna O’Reilly‘s add a feminine touch to updos and down ‘dos alike. “This style works best on hair the day after a shampoo,” said Cavallari’s hairstylist Marcus Francis. “The extra texture will help when braiding and pinning up hair.” Try tiny plaits on each side of your head like Cavallari, a French braided bun like Jones, or a chic hairline braid like O’Reilly. While the color authorities at Pantone predicted 2012 to be a year filled with tangerine orange in the fashion world, celebrities have gone in a much sunnier direction. By the end of Q1, it seems yellow is one of the most popular red carpet choices, with stars like Ahna O’ReillyElizabeth BanksNicole Richie, and Gabrielle Union being just a few of those who chose the eye-popping hue. We love how this lemon shade works on all skin tones and can immediately brighten up your face without washing you out. Of course, this color is a head-turner, so if you want to make an impression, consider wearing it head-to-toe. Or, if you don’t want to be a walking ray of light, go for a more subtle look with a single piece, like a skirt, blouse, shoes, or bangle. Tell us: Do you like to wear yellow?

Celebrities love Honor! Medical-student-turned-designer Giovanna Randall launched the label in 2009, and her ultra-feminine creations have been red carpet regulars ever since, most recently appearing on Shailene Woodley at last night’s Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games. “They’re strong, but feminine,” Woodley, who often wears the label, told InStyle.com of Randall’s designs at Honor’s fall 2012 fashion show. “I like the fact that her clothes are feminine with a masculine touch.” Randall agrees: I guess every woman wants to be the mix between being really ladylike and really tough,” the designer told us. I think about that a lot when I design.” Randall describes her ideal customer as a “strong woman who isn’t afraid to be noticed, but does’t need to be noticed all the time.” It is a fitting description of her celebrity fan base, which includes Taylor SwiftAhna O’Reilly, Kirsten Dunst, and more. See who else loves wearing Honor in the gallery, and shop the collection at shop.honornyc.com, or at the designer’s New York store (68 Gansevoort Street).

InStyle PartyEvans Vestal Ward

Guests filed into Boa Steakhouse in Los Angeles at 4:30 p.m. to take their seat at InStyle’s Oscars viewing party last night, where they caught the red carpet and awards show on the giant big-screen TVs scattered around the room. Allison Janney (in David Meister), Ahna O’Reilly (in Randi Rahm), and Chris Lowell of The Help huddled together on one of the restaurant’s many leather couches, and clapped with joy as co-star Octavia Spencer won her Best Supporting Actress Award. “That hit me in my heart,” Allison Janney (in David Meister) told InStyle.com. “We were all crying over here because she is one of the most glorious people on the planet, and I’ve loved her for a long time. It’s surreal to see someone who was in the trenches doing what she loves and have this happen for her.” See more stars who watched the Oscars with InStyle in the gallery!

Look who brought some sexy back to the SAG AwardsKyra Sedgwick‘s red-hot Emilio Pucci gown featured additional peekaboo side slits, the backside of Julie Bowen‘s magenta Temperley London look draped like a reverse cowlneck, Angelina Jolie‘s halter Jenny Packham design cut just above her bottom, and Ahna O’Reilly‘s crimson Nha Khanh style fully exposed her vertebrae. And The Help star told InStyle.com she chose her look for that exact reason: “What you see is what you get,” she told us on the red carpet. “I tried on a number of dresses, but I loved this one right away. I wanted something sleek and modern.” Way to go, ladies—we’ve got your back!
